Training Camp Roster

The Sabres being too lazy to update the heights and weights on this speaks to how the entire operation works.

8 goalies in camp is about 4 too many. Ik it gets paired down quick but oof.

Mrtka should be fun to watch. Wonder if he gets a couple preseason games.

You know it’s not a Sabre thing. It runs  through all professional sports.  They see no competitive advantage to updating the numbers and therefore don’t do it.

Every year.

But it is fun to see someone on the Prospect's Challenge roster gain 10 pounds in 4 days for the Training Camp roster. And then lose 10 pounds for the regular season when they report to Rochester.

Pisses me off too, but if camp hasn’t started they probably don’t even have updates.

I would like to see Lindy play his real team for the first period every preseason game.  They typically focus on the bubble players instead of getting the team ready to play.

Zach Benson is listed at his combine weight, so either he's still 170lbs 28 months after the combine or 4 strippers and a horse are going to light the Olympic torch.

Interviews are tomorrow with both Adams and Ruff scheduled to speak.

First on ice session is Thursday Morning at 9:30

Dear Kevyn,  why the ***** are you still here?

Lindy, why the ***** are your assistant coaches still here?

Here's Kevyn's interview:

"We made a lot of good moves and were excited and I think there's potential and Terry gives us resources and trades are hard and we're tougher to play against"

I don’t think there’s any open spots except backup goalie. So, all prospects.

Assuming health, 13 forward spots set and 6 D. If UPL is healthy, he and Lyon are the goalies.

Kozak will try to be the 14th forward. Johnson, Jones and Bryson will battle for 7D.

2 of those 4 will make the team.

Georgiev and Levi will fight to be the 2nd goalie if UPL is out for any length of time.

Hopefully, for the 1st time in the last 3 years they run a NORMAL preseason and actually not just try to optimize lines but actually succeed at it.

2 years ago they were too concerned with finding out which Amerks could fit into the top 6 / top 4 should injuries strike to bother figuring out which SABRES should be there in the 1st place.  Last year, due to the abreviated camp they pretty much picked the lines and pairings before seeing if there might be some better chemistry to develop with a smidge of experimentation.

They have ZERO excuses for not being ready to go from the day they host the Rags and hopefully they catch some teams still getting it together to build up a bit of a cushion for the inevitable stretches of bad injury luck or simply everyone being flat at the same time for about a week which almost all middling teams suffer at some point in the season.

I like the idea of using preseason to let the actual roster stabilize. We don’t need a bunch of guys who aren’t making the opening roster take ice time that could be used to figure out line combos. Those guys can prove they deserve a call up in the minors.

So many ways the forwards can be arranged:

Tage is the biggest offensive threat and will anchor a scoring line. Likely a RW, possibly at centre. Will they load him up with vets or ask him to carry kids again?

Will Tuch join him on a true 1st line, be counted on to anchor a 2-way 2nd line, or will he be asked to carry kids?

Will they use Norris as a 1C? Will it be with Tage, or with Tuch, or both?

Will McLeod centre a 3rd line checking line, a 2nd line matchup line, or be asked to be the defensive conscience with some offensive wingers?

Where in the top 9 do they plug Zucker?

Is Quinn the 3rd-line RW or do they switch him to the left to replace Peterka in the top 6? How long is his leash?

Has Benson graduated to the top 6 or do they see him first as a checker?

Do they intend to give Kulich every opportunity to be the other top 6 centre? Or does he get more favourable matchups on a 3rd line?

Do they see Doan as bottom six grinder or will he get a shot with some of their better players? Same question with Greenway?

Are Krebs and Danforth inked onto the 4th line or do they have any upward mobility?

Malenstyn is a safe bet to be a 4th-line pounder, but is he an everyday player?

-2LW

-He’ll be in the top six unless Zucker outplays him

-Doan on third line

-Kulich is 3C to start

-Krebs is 4C due to circumstance, not ability

-Malenstyn Krebs Danforth
