Taylor Hall signing: 8 million one yr with Sabres

Expecting the D addition is out of reach at this point, but do expect at minimum an upgrade of Hutton.  That combined with major upgrades to the top 6 should net out positively the standing pat/ slight downgrades to the bottom 6 & the D.

Huh?  We can't swap one of Risto, Montour, and Miller for an LHD?

I'd go goalie first. You?

Saying that as someone who very much isn't thrilled with the prospect of Irwin skating regular minutes (shudder)

I've also just realized the fact we are talking almost exclusively goalies (for crucial roster adds) is a spot we haven't been in quite some time.

Quite some time.

Quite some time.

It's been a problem since the Miller trade.  It's just that other problems have been more evident.  Not that I think it's luxurious to be talking about the problem in net--it's not, and it's unfamiliar territory to Sabres fans who once were spoiled with Vezina winners approximately 25% of the time.

He was not the only one.

Taylor Hall must think that many of the Buffalo sports media are homelesss.

I was embarrassed for some of them.

Exactly. It's like digging into a big gambling hole, and we've won enough (seemingly) in a row this offseason (finally) where we are "back" to goalie being the big thing.

The bold - I'm trying to think now if we've had ELITE goaltending for more or less than half of my tenure as a fan. Has to be way less than half, now.

Nope damn, not as old as I thought. Started ~ age 6, Hasek was there. 9 Hasek years, 3 after, 1 lockout, Ryan Miller for 9, 6 years since.

28 years of fandom, 27 actual seasons - 18/27 with a great goalie. 2/3rds. Spoiled by goaltending.

Until recently. I don't like it.

I don't know how old you are, but in general, I feel that people who looked at Miller as less than elite grew up on Hasek or otherwise were spoiled by watching him.  Miller wasn't Hasek, of course; he wasn't the greatest goalie in NHL history.  Fine.  He still was elite.

Broke it down above. And I agree.

This also means, that by digging back up to where "goalie" is the main issue, we're back to 2014, when we traded Miller.

Other words - right near the beginning of the tank.

Let it be known: The signing of Taylor Hall marked the Official end of the Great Tank

I could not agree more. Harrington and PHam also looked like they just rolled out of bed.

This conjures up some disturbing imagery.

Well, I just listened to Hall's presser.  Great stuff, and highly recommended.

He's honest, articulate, earnest and is very psyched to be here.

I think he's going to put up a big year and then re-sign here.  And then we'll have a better combo on our top line than Matthews and Marner for the next 5 years.

bring Pilut back to be #2 LHD ( he has an out clause on his KHL contract

Trade Miller for a 3rd and Hutton for a 7th

Why would Pilut come back, and why would he be 2D?

Why is Miller only worth a 3rd, and who is taking Hutton?

So many questions about your armchair moves.

Pilut- because it’s a new GM and they tell him they will actually play him in the NHL.  Probably 3rd pair.

Miller at $4M probably isn’t even worth a 3rd.

Probably no one is taking Hutton.  Bury him in the AHL.

BTW, Staal is another party whose spirits about the Sabres might've been flagging but who is undoubtedly more excited about this team after the Hall signing.
