Ullmark being called up?

MODO Hockey

Recommended Posts

Johassen was a third rounder couple years ago. Got an amateur tryout in Rochester late this year.

Ullmark will either be in Buffalo or Vegas next year, IMO.

And let the "Petersen's not coming" speculation begin.

Here is the Sabres goalie depth chart

NHL

Lehner (rfa)

Nilsson (ufa)

AHL

Ullmark (rfa - expansion?)

Kasdorf (1yr left on elc)

Prospects

Petersen (30 days to sign or UFA) - trade?

Johansson (3 year elc)

How will this shake out?

Scenario 1: Ullmark lost to LV and Petersen goes UFA.

Jbot re-signs Lehner and Nilsson for the NHL, and Johansson and Kasdorf fight it out in Roch. I think this or scenario 2 are the most likely.

Scenario 2: Ullmark re-signed and Petersen goes UFA.

Jbot re-signs Lehner and Ullmark for the NHL and Johansson and Kasdorf fight it out it Roch.

Scenario 3: Ullmark lost, but Petersen sings.

Lehner and Nilsson return for the Sabres and Petersen and Johansson battle in Roch. Kasdorf starts in Cinn. Could see Johansson start in Cinn to maximize PT.

Scenario 4: Ullmark re-signs and Petersen signs.

Same as Scenario 3 except Ullmark replaces Nilsson.

These are the most likely scenarios, but Jbot may go after a different backup instead of Nilsson if Ullmark is lost. I think Jbot put to bed any notion the Lehner won't be back. Only drama there is contract size and length.

It's not ideal to lose a prospect such as Petersen to free agency, but before anyone freaks out about the lack of depth in our system in net, is that the 2017 draft is projected to be very strong and deep for goalies.

Goalies take forever to develop. We drafted Petersen in 2013. He's had 4 years of development and still isn't ready for the NHL. Even if we hit on a goalie this draft it will probably be 2021 or 2022 before he has a look at the NHL.

Exactly. This is why you need draft at least 1 goalie every year.

XGMTM invested a first in 2015, a third in 2014, had Ullmark and Petersen looking very promising from 2013 and 2012, and acquired Kasdorf in a trade - five goalies in the system under the age of 25. Is it your opinion that he neglected the pipeline at the position?

Not exactly, but if we lose both Ullmark and Petersen, a very likely possibility, we will be down to 3 with Kasdorf no longer a legit prospect and Johansson hasn't exactly been a star in Sweden. This scenario was forseeable last year at the draft with expansion already on the horizon and Petersen already declining a contract. Furthermore, with 10 picks last season, 5 of which 5th round or below, could it have hurt to use one on a goalie? Edited by GASabresFan

Yes, and we have a 25 year old #1 and we're also allowed to sign free agents.

Yes of course we are allowed to do that. I was responding to your point about not freaking out about losing Petersen because the draft is supposedly good for goaltending.

Foreseeable?  Sure, but the odds, in Murray's opinion, had to be very low.  Buffalo had to feel Petersen was a lock.  They were, as Briere48 pointed out, sending someone to Notre Dame to help him develop his game.  All things can be foreseeable to a certain extent.  Heck, I can even say the Sabres need to consider the idea of Eichel not wanting to stay w/ Buffalo after his ELC expires.  Yes, he'll be an RFA.  But Eichel could tell the Sabres he'll stay in Buffalo for the RFA period, but leave after that.  If that occurred, the Sabres would need to trade him to get something out of it.  So yes, it all can be foreseeable.  But you really gotta consider the odds of that happening.  Let me add I think the odds of Eichel wanting out of Buffalo are extremely low.

Ullmark is an RFA. If the Sabres don't have him protected, quite sure they do not, Las Vegas will have from June 18th to June 20th to sign him. Assuming we'll find out on the 21st. Hoping Buffalo doesn't lose him. Would like him to be the backup next season. Still hoping Petersen will sign w/ the Sabres. But the odds seem to be low.
