Former Sabres prospect Gregg Sutch talks about leaving hockey

Unfortunately, no matter how much you enjoy doing something, when it becomes a job, it becomes "work". There are pressures, politics, demands, etc., that come along with being paid that make it nearly impossible to be just fun. My first real job was a dream situation; a kid in a candy shop. It became work pretty quickly.

That said, he wasn't being asked to be a skill player anymore, but was instead risking his long-term health (especially with concussions), so it's understandable why he walked away.

Maybe even earlier than a few months. I think it pre-dated the return of Ted Nolan. I recall reading the article and thinking of Drew Stafford.

It's dated Feb. 18, 2014 though. Maybe it was updated? Or there was another article?

Weird that he didn't mention his hearing impairment in that article.

"Sutch, the Sarnia Sting’s rookie wrecking ball, was born with what doctors term “severe to profound” hearing loss. He uses a hearing aid in each ear to help amplify sound, but finds that once he’s on the ice his biggest asset is his finely honed hockey sense."

It's kind of like Jason Bonsignore all over again.

Only difference is, Bonsignore was drafted much higher, 4th overall to be exact. He went from sure-fire stud, to a total bust.

*EDIT: Here is another good read about him, mentions how Kevin Prendergast was really there for him and tried to help him.

Jason never went anywhere because he was too busy with heavy drugs after he got paid.

That, and driving all around Rochester in his (then) brand new Dodge Viper.

While I can't comment on the booger sugar, (like he'd be the first rich athlete to like the smell of it) if a dodge viper was his version of big timing it, I'm glad buffalo didn't have the chance to draft him.

Idk. I remember older kids that I knew who hung out with him telling me that he was heavy into the nose candy, and was seriously neglecting doing any conditioning or working out after he got his money.

Like I said, just glad the Sabres never had the chance to draft him

Is it really that big a deal that it may have been posted previously?
