I think this is one of the subtleties that get lost. For any three shots by a Sabres player, the progression goes like this:

Aim for the gap between the goalie and left post: miss 1.5 ft to the left way wide.

Aim for the gap between the goalie and left post: miss 1.5 ft to the right, hit goalie in the crest.

Screw it, I'll aim for the crest and miss: shot goes directly to crest.

 

Repeat.
