Pirates take the Checkers in victory against Charlotte

Published on: 11th October, 2010 by Chris Roy

Portland, ME – It’s only the second game of the season, but the Portland Pirates are beginning to look like a team coming together.

Jhonas Enroth made 42 saves, and Parrish added a goal and two assists as the Pirates went on for the 5-1 victory over the Charlotte Checkers in front of 2,621 at a Columbus Day matinee at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Enroth was a little frustrated with not getting the shutout, but he was happy with the bounce back game from Saturday's performance.... In regard the defense, it's thin, and the one weakness of the Pirates this season. It will improve as the season goes on, but they could use another hard-nosed d-man even once Gragnani returns, which could be within the next 10 days.

Can you explain what purpose is served by giving guys who will never see the NHL again a 'C' or 'A'?

Whether they'll play in the NHL is irrelevent.... The process for picking a captain was based on the players voting on who they wanted as captain. After the choice was made Dino voice his approval of the choice and it's Ellis. Last year was Brad Larsen, and the year previous was Tyler Bouck... neither went back to the NHL.

You want somebody who has the experience and can help guide the prospects through the season's up's and down's...Somebody who will be vocal or will pull a player aside when needed.

Ellis is good choice for captain.

Can't he do all of that without the 'C'? The franchise needs to start developing players with Captain qualities. Why not use the Pirates 'C' for that purpose. Giving it to a player with no future is like the Sabres giving it to Rivet, it serves no purpose.

Pirates pack offensive punch while power play stumbles

Published on: 14th October, 2010 by Chris Roy

It’s only two games into the season, and the Portland Pirates have gotten off to a strong start, winning their first two games, but not everything clicking for the team.

The issue with the Pirates is they’re still looking for their first power play goal of the season as they enter their first three-in-three weekend.

Couldn't agree with you more.

We're putting too much value in here on that little bit of fabric on the front the jersey. Leaders are leaders regardless of whether or not they have a letter on their jersey. Giving the C to some kid isn't going to suddenly make him develop leadership qualities. You don't groom a leader, they figure it out themselves.
