New center ice logo at HSBC Arena

Two or less

Nope, not until the Goathead. (And not after the Goathead, either, except in the Slug.)

I still have replica CCM and Starter (!) Sabres jerseys from the pre-Goathead 90's and both have the red eye. I always thought it was really cool to have that one extra color there in the logo. (The same way I love that the Blackhawks logo has a bunch of colors that aren't red, black, or white.)

But I also remember as a kid noticing that sometimes the red eye was there, and sometimes it wasn't.

It also reminded me of The Terminator.

The jersey crest has always had red in the eye. I've done a lot of research into vintage authentic jerseys for Buffalo and the amount of variants out there is rather interesting. The one constant however has been the red eye of the Buffalo. The Albino white Buffalo is part of Native American lore and you can't really have an albino Buffalo without a red eye.

This poorly made hockey card uses the body of Joe Daley, who only played net for Buffalo during 1970-71. You can clearly see the red eye on the jersey crest, although Opeechee chose to exclude it on the card image. If you don't believe me that the red is there, save it to your computer and zoom in a few times, it's there.

The only time I would suspect the red eye never appeared might have been on the prototype jersey that a few places talk about, which was a Leafs home jersey for a base. The logo may not have officially had a red eye at that point, but I couldn't tell you for sure.

Thanks for those links - neat to look back and remember some of the players. Prepare to be accused of doctoring pictures.

What he said..... There was a blurb written about the original Sabres logo way back when. It definitely brought in the element of the Native American belief about the great white buffalo and it also gave another explanation for the red eye, which now escapes my memory. If I can find the blurb, I'll post it.

So I'm really curious to know what happens with the Slugs still attached to the bottom ring of the jumbotron?

They are still there in the ice installation video.

According to whoever it was blogging for the Buffalo News from the start of rookie camp, they're still there. You'd have to think they'll be gone for the unveil on saturday though.

Still on the web site too.

Mostly in extras such as the Yellow and Blue Make Green logo, the Shop NHL.com ad, prospect pieces, etc. The actual webpage has only had a hidden outline slug for a year now; the third (now primary) logo being far more prominent. I did notice the slug on the MSG adds for the early season games, as well as on WGR's webpage. I expect that they will slowly disappear once the logo changeover has been officially revealed. I don't remember, but I'm guessing that the goat head popped up in 2006-07 and that change included a color switch.

All I care is that the NHL shop website gets those jerseys up and available right away on Saturday. I've got a small credit card bill this month and I'm completely ready to bring it up a little bit.

I don't think they're too worried about removing them prior to Saturday. When the players come out in new jerseys, i think most people will get the point. They'll be gone by October 9th.

I don't think u can buy them online, or any where else 4 that matter until Sept 23rd. They r only available at the Sabres store until then.

from sabres.com

This is part of an exclusive availability at the Sabres Store that runs until Wednesday, September 23. The store hours during the exclusive sale are: Saturday until 4 p.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Monday-Wednesday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

I've been out of touch for awhile and I need some help: Has "the slug" been killed officially?

Technically, not until Saturday when they reveal that the home and away jerseys are last year's third jersey and a white version thereof, and the new third jersey is a mix of the original (1970) royal blue away jersey and that of the Sabres' predecessor, the Bisons. The slug will not appear on their uniform in any way shape or form. It has has also been removed from the practice jerseys (as seen at rookie camp, not July's prospect camp) and most other official media. Small remnants (e.g., the slug outline on sabres.com) still remain, but they will likely be removed one-by-one.

They will be removed and likely offered for sale. The goatheads from the scoreboard were auctioned off when they were selling everything from the Aud. .

OK, I'll start the bidding at $500 ...

... that is, I will take them off their hands if they pay me $500.

Actually, I would pay a little for them, then have a big celebration in which I would salt one, using an oversized salt shaker, and then burn it.

That's not a bad idea at all. I'd pitch in some money to buy them so that they can go up in smoke. They should create a nice size blaze, and anyone that bought any gear with that hideous logo can toss it on the fire. The slug must be eradicated entirely.

I think it would be awesome if they took just the Buffalo from the old logo and put four of those at the bottom of the jumbotron to snort smoke when we score goals.

And, of course, each one would have a glowing red eye.

I think they are made of metal.
