I agree, and I think most GMs agree, which is why Helly is still a Jet.

Usually a major trade like this, the asset is clearly a needed improvement. I am just not sure Hellebuyck will prove to be that for the Sabres. He could, and I will gratefully be wrong. Or he could be losing a step and UPL turns into the next Tim Thomas (late career emergent). I can't really advocate for either side to be honest, all I can advocate for is caution by Jarmo. But here's the thing: If my concerns are justified, Jarmo will be cautious, but so will every other GM considering a trade, and I wouldn't be surprised if the return to WPG turns out to be considerably less than what the Sabres were purportedly offering before the draft. And to that end, I still think the Sabres are pretty likely to land him.

Why? I know nothing. But I can look at stats with the best of them and the trend for Helly is negative the last few years (with the exception of Olympic Gold, but the Sabres aren't trying to win that), while the trend for UPL is positive. Helly, if acquired, may give the Sabres a Hasek/Miller caliber goalie, or could be the worst trade in Sabres history. It's a high stakes gamble for Jarmo, which is why I think he's never going to overpay. Too much risk involved.

They both had better seasons than Hellebuyck last year. The question is how much of Hellebuyck's stats last season were due to the team he played on versus his actual ability. But the same can be said for UPL and Lyon (especially UPL): When he wasn't having great seasons, how much of that was on the team and how much on him? Or to put it another way: Is UPL on an upward trajectory, and Hellebuyck on a downward one? If their stats last season versus previous are indicative of future performance, why would we want Hellebuyck? I'm especially concerned about Hellebuyck's playoff stats the last three playoffs he's been in. No better than UPL in his first playoff experience. I'm not necessarily anti-Hellebuyck, but my point is that it's not as clear cut as so many people make it out be.

It would be funny if one of them did, paid a king's ransom to do it, and it turns out last season was the start of his decline into mediocrity.
