Spot on. This is exactly what Beane does. Gives out many short “prove it” contracts. On many of them, the player doesn’t work out. But he’s hit on some good ones that play decent roles. The best part is that none of them have long term cap implications.

Basically what I take from this is that Jack is “not a bad person,” but we probably traded the wrong player in the ROR trade. No doubt there was a ton of that sentiment. But, none of us were in the Sabres locker room. This is on prior leadership.

GMs on the hot seat who may not be around when/if these guys mature and start winning. And if Jack ends up being damaged goods, they probably would’ve been fired anyhow (due the previous reason). If Jack pans out, he saves his job. So, do nothing and get fired or do something and possibly get fired.

That making the huge assumption we would’ve picked a talented F at that spot instead of Johnson.

I’m fine with him having the C on it. But, I would have a heart-to-heart with him about whether he should voluntarily relinquish it. Tell him the requirements of being a C and ask him whether he wants to wear it on his sweater or not.

Isn’t this advice you would give to any kid, regardless of profession/job/career? Or, is this something more newsworthy?
