  1. Greed and liability are meaning the same thing in this case. Who’s going to lose $50M if things go wrong? Who’s potentially going to lose even more money if something catastrophic occurs and the Sabres went against their insurance policy and recommended a different surgery? Either case, it comes down to money lost, nothing else. Terry or Kim won’t lose one night of sleep if Jack’s surgery goes wrong as long as they don’t have to pay for the consequences.
  2. Agree. As someone who has lived with a chronic disease all my life, with multiple surgeries, I can now say that you cannot put a price on health. Certainly not $50M. However, I know how a 24 year-old male thinks. They’re indestructible.
  3. If I were Jack, assuming I knew all the medical information and risks, would take on the financial risk and have the ADR done. He’s already made more money than all of us would make in a lifetime and could comfortably retire even if his remaining contract was voided. He’s 24. I don’t think he’s getting the right advice here, especially from his agents, who have a financial interest on that $50M remaining. This whole situation is being driven by greed, on both sides. However, there could be teams that automatically drop out if he gets the ADR. I don’t believe a single word that other teams would readily allow him to have the ADR. That’s his agents feeding the press.
  4. He might need to swing a trade to distract the fans.
  5. Just serves as a reminder we are a work in progress. The bigger victory will come depending on how the Sabres respond. Last year’s group would follow this with another loss.
  6. I’m at the point where I just don’t want to see a shutout. I’ll go to sleep happy with this effort plus a goal.
  7. Yep. Them capitalizing off their very few chances is due to the difference in talent they have.
  8. I believe the Sabres are the holders of the policy that insures them against financial loss in case of injury. It’s not a health insurance policy, so they aren’t opting not to cover the surgery. I don’t know the details, but I imagine that purchasing such a policy is not compulsory, but comes with stipulations. Type of surgery is likely one of them. If the Sabres allow him to have any surgery, the Sabres will be in breach of contract with the insurance company and their policy will likely be cancelled. In this case, Terry would not receive any money from them in case of a injury. Now, if this is a single policy insuring all of the Sabres players (rather than contract by contract), a breach of this policy simply wouldn’t be possible, as it would be financial suicide.
  9. Not exact, just like Jack can go get his surgery anytime he likes, the Sabres can also give their blessing. There will be consequences though. Their insurance policy for Jack will likely be terminated before he’s even discharged from the hospital. The arguing over all this is who wants to be the bag holder. Jack vs Terry. I’ll go with the guy who built a multi-billion dollar corporation from scratch.
  10. @Pimlach You seem confused. Use your words.
  11. I find this “grievance” and “pressure” stuff a bit much. The only person feeling pressure right now is Jack. It’s his God given right to have any surgery he pleases. As an employee of the Sabres, my guess is he can even get them to pay for the whole thing as well. However, he can’t have his cake and eat it too. He must assume the full financial consequences of a poor outcome. If he’s so positive this is the right surgery for him, then he should have nothing to fear. As for the Olympics, do the Sabres have the right, as defined in the CBA, to deny him from participating?
  12. Agreed. I don’t see this as a viable option. Everyone has a sob story and their agent will try to use it in the future. I also don’t see Jack as some vital piece to the NHL story that would necessitate them changing the whole CBA.
  13. Because he’ll get assets back to improve his team. Besides, money is money. It’s black and white, and $2.5M is more than $1-2M regardless where he’s playing.
  14. If Terry is content with losing $12.5M for Jack to sit and rot for nothing, it seems reasonable (and even face saving) for Terry to retain $1-2M per year to facilitate a trade. He’d lose less than he would collecting insurance, would jettison this headache off the team, and would gain assets. However, I don’t think retention is the main thing holding up this trade.
  15. That’s the rub. All off-season we were constantly brainwashed into believing that the Sabres were going to “historically” bad or how much worse can the worse team in the league possibly get. I don’t care if these teams are bad or not playoff teams. The are NHL teams and we are proving we are above them.
  16. Plus, the pressure to win starts mounting once the season starts, not during the summer. This pressure starts accumulating more once injuries start to mount and the season is now in doubt. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
  17. The Yotes goalie sure didn’t look disinterested to me. He played lights out and very well could’ve stole this game for them. Let’s give credit where credit’s due.
  18. I don’t remember any overly negative comments directed towards Ulmark. Modo just claimed that he had inside knowledge of the Sabres negotiations and how they purposely screwed him over, but he refused to give any details. Oh well…
