....... .. .... I'm going to make this as nice as I possibly can: comparing stats from now to the mid-80s mid-90s without adjusting for era is akin to comparing gas prices without adjusting for inflation.

You have a much different definition of "pretty good" than I do. And I'm a borderline Tyrod fan compared to most of this place :)

I hate this saying with the heat of a thousand suns. Having a good team begets winning. Nothing else.
-
Foles got hot at the right time. Sorta like Joe Flacco a few years ago. And much like Joe Flacco, we shouldn't get fooled into thinking he's actually good.

This conversation went way too fast for me to jump in now, but don't think I didn't notice this. You've got one solid backhanded compliment headed your way. My revenge may not be swift, but it shall be righteous.

Or you frequent Sabrespace and would get some level of enjoyment from watching Dudacek's head explode :D :p

I disagree with literally this entire post

I'm posting this here for everyone to reference whenever someone says our schedule is easy/hard next season because of this season's records. http://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/blog/2018/ignore-virtually-all-offseason-nfl-strength-of-schedule-information Friends don't let friends think one season's record predicts the next.

Trade Deadline Deals 2018 (Non-Sabres Thread)
TrueBlueGED replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
I thought for sure LA was going to stuff his bag full of painkillers at the border to Richards him. Or did they forget to do that with Lombardi gone? -
Again, the problem with Harrington isn't that he's pointing out the team stinks. The problem is his insights into why they're bad are neither insightful nor accurate--he has no clue how to make valid causal inferences.

What I meant was we're probably drafting top-5 this year, and unless the lottery blesses us, that pick is more easily replacing Sam's production than it is giving us a defenseman.
-
Eh, I dunno about that. Top-5 picks regularly come in and produce 40-50 point seasons within a year of being drafted.

Classic Travolta really could play a villain, couldn't he?

Compared to Suicide Squad, it's basically the Godfather Part II.

I never said we couldn't get a blue chip defender, but probabilistically, we're more likely to end up with a blue chip forward than a blue chip defender. Looking at this draft in particular, aside from Dahlin, the best prospect where we draft is a forward (unless you like Hughes a lot more than I do). That puts relying on a late-1st (if we get one for Kane) or an early 2nd for our Dman. The odds of that Dman being top pair quality is quite a bit lower than the odds of a top-5 forward pick being top line caliber, to say nothing of the likely timeline for development to those respective ceilings. That's what I was getting at with my comment.

Face Off was terrible.

The only ROR trade that would make sense to me is Provorov, and we all know that isn't happening.
-
Scouts mistakenly get enamored with tools all the time, thinking along the lines of "we just need to coach up the mechanics and it'll be fine." Except that never actually happens. Just in recent Buffalo history we've had Losman, Fitz, and EJ who were all "fix mechanics to fix accuracy" guys, and the accuracy was never fixed. And there are countless examples around the league of the same thing happening. Scouts/GMs/coaches are oftentimes their own worst enemies.

I agree. But if we're talking a major trade (a real one, not a hype machine one), then those are the names that jumped into my mind. FWIW, Philly has some real nice pieces on the blue line that it might be worth moving Sam for. O'Reilly is a harder sell for me unless the name coming back is Provorov (and it wouldn't be). This draft is rich in forward talent at the top. Unless we win the lottery, we're probably going with a forward there. I guess what I'm trying to say is it'll be easier to replace Sam through the draft that to get a blue chip Dman.
-
Reinhart. Despite the public comments from Botterill, maybe O'Reilly.

Kristen ShiltonVerified account @kristen_shilton Feb 10More Mike Babcock on #Leafs positive progress since he took over: "Well, we got Auston. But what if we don’t? I remember when we got to three [in the draft lottery], I was jumping up in the living room. When we got to one, tears. People don’t understand. You need real players."

Prediction time: Will Lehner be traded at the deadline?

To be fair, no goalie not named Hasek would get this particular incarnation of the team to the playoffs :p -

That's something I hadn't thought about. Taking it further, OT is also just regular hockey, not 3-on-3. -
Allen is definitely 6th for me. I get how teams are going to fall in love with the physical tools, but I still have yet to see any QB who magically developed accuracy. Allen is fool's gold. Sure, his ceiling is higher than Rudolph's, but he also has like a 1% chance of hitting it where I think Rudolph is likely to be a Dalton-level starter.* The thought of a Dalton-level starter is in no way, shape, or form, exciting to me...but is still preferable to drafting the next EJ. Edit: I concur with Liger's ranking otherwise, though flipping Jackson and Darnold is quite tempting to me.

What about stats? Among goalies with at least 24 starts, he's tied for 26th in the league in cumulative SV% and 19th in 5v5 SV%. He's 27th in the league in GSAA at even strength. He's 28th in the league in high-danger SV%, 18th in mid-danger SV%, and 17th in low-danger SV%. He's basically the textbook definition of mediocre any way you look at it.
