Calling them "riots" is dishonest. Trump will call any protest he dislikes a "riot" and Fox News will scream "RIOT!" into the airwaves nonstop until Maga believes that LA is a post-apocalyptic hellscape. It's generally the case that the broadcasters are employees of the team. That's not just the NHL, it's most of the team sports in North America. I think the NFL is the exception for television broadcasts but they still employ the radio broadcast employees.

I feel like every team is going to hire the broadcast crew across all three leagues. Maybe not in the biggest of markets, but these broadcast exist specifically for the teams.
