You are talking about goal differential. That is certainly a worthwhile discussion and worthy of it's own thread, but we are talking about how the Sabres replace the lost output.

UPL is good for a goal this year. So that makes 255. Bank on it.

Sam Reinhart has only scored over 40 once, twice if we want to count the 39 he had last year. He also shoots at 15.9% on average and manages 224 shots a year on average over the last 3 years. Peterka shoots at a career of 12.7% and was at 15.6% this past year. He only averages 199 shots over the last 2years. So Peterka will have to add 25 shots on average to his total and maintain his current peak of 15.6% just to get into the realm of Reinhart. Sam has had 4 30+ goal seasons. Peterka would have to go wild to get to 50. Can Peterka be a consistent 30g scorer, maybe. He will need to develop more than just his rush game. Can he hit 40 consistently, idk, I am not sold on that at all.

Two ways to make up those goals: Other players score the goals. The goals are prevented by playing better defense. But yeah, goaltending is part of the equation.

The jobs report is a good tool nonetheless as it is a good gauge for indicating either headwinds or tailwinds relative to the economy and how that may impact lenders, employers, etc. Perhaps if the CES were mandatory on a federal level, the lags we see in the reporting data would be lessened, but since it relies on over 600,000 businesses and agencies nationwide to voluntarily contribute to the survey, it is inevitable that those businesses and agencies that participate may not have all the pertinent data by the first of every month. It’s a good thing that when all the data does arrive, the numbers can be adjusted to get a more detailed picture for previous months. I think it’s worth noting that individual states also conduct these surveys and they dovetail the stats compiled on the federal level as well. I can’t agree that data is simply data as different data depends on a myriad of different factors that go into its compilation and analysis. We can all agree that we don’t need a president accusing the USBLS of just making up the numbers and cooking the books. Which is exactly what would happen with a blind loyalist in charge. But it’s impossible to do, anyway, so the real worry would be those far right media outlets who don’t question anything he does, and gleefully report his made up crap, anyway.

Good post! However, it's not just JJPs 27g they're losing... it's the 30-40 he'll score this season and however many he scores during his prime years... 40, 50?.... see Reinhart, Sam. GMKA is betting on Norris and Quinn to be significant contributors on offense. I believe it's possible, and I like the players, but it's certainly a gamble.

The information is there on NHL edge. Just select by team, scroll down to shot location, then select goals. Then you can chose high danger, mid range and long range to break down the areas they define. High danger is in the crease or directly in front of the net. Mid range is between the dots to just outside the top of the circles. Long range is everything else except shots from the deep wings, behind the net or past the blue line. Not sure why they don't count shots from the deep wings. Thompson had 5 goals from those areas last year that would not show up in the other categories.

That goes to the question of whether the 5 on 5 scoring is sustainable. The blurb is missing some context. The article says they scored 90 mid range goals. Ok, but how is that defined. They also said the forwards scored 7 long range goals. That leaves 168 goals un-accounted for. Assuming some are long range D goals, that leaves about 160-165 goals scoring close in. How does that rank in the NHL? Top 5, Top 10? How do all these stats compare with teams like Florida or Edm? Assuming we scored 160+ close in, my guess is going to the net might not be as big as an issue as we thought. We also have a roster full of talented shooters like Thompson, Norris and others so maybe the mid range shooting is ideal. I honestly don’t know and wish the article gave better context.

The fact that a team that relies almost entirely on long range shots for goals with a roster of perimeter players who absolutely refuse to go to the front of the net is among the league leaders in long range goals isn't surprising.

I think the Mid and long range scoring is sustainable given the types of shooters we have on the team in general. We were above 90% in every category of shot speed and if anything we just added more with Kesselring.

I’m not calm about our goalie situation, especially about UPL. I’m hoping he can revert to his play a couple of years ago and not to his erratic play of last year. You may be calm but I’m not. Because of our goaltending situation I’m queasy and in a state of agitation.
