Who do you want?

I don't know; I just have a hard time with the thought of using "Kotalik" and "energy" (line) in the same sentence.

I'm going away from the whole notion of energy line. I think having guys like Recchi, Satan, etc on that fourth line might work out better. I have often toyed with the idea of the fourth line being composed of a face off specialist, a power play specialist and a shoot out specialist.

Disregarding trades - which I still hope Darcy will look into...these are the UFAs I'd most like to see on the Sabres

O'Sullivan - I think this guy can pop, perhaps he needs a change of scenery

Frolik - ditto

Cullen - a solid all around player

Lombardi - fast, scores in playoffs, has upside potential

Volchenkov - good shot blocker, solid D

Michalek - a mini Volchenkov

I realize there are too many forwards here but I think they should trade Stafford & Gerbe and of course, Connolly to make room on the roster and under the cap.

BTW don't look for Darcy to do anything until well into July at the earliest. His modus operandi is to sit back and see what's left after everyone has swooped in and had their fill.

Darcy could claim O'Sullivan off of waivers right now, but he'd come with one year at $2.38 million. That's a lot to spend on someone that you hope a change of scenery would get to return to a form that he had for one year in LA, especially someone who had a bigger minus (-35) last year than he had points (34 points). He'll be a UFA in two days, so if you want him (big if), he may be available for less.

I'm not sure about who I want to add, to be honest. There are some FAs out there that are worth taking a look at...but none of them truly excite me or make me think they're the difference-maker the team needs. Maybe Volchenkov. Maybe. He'd definitely be an improvement - but I don't know if he's the difference-maker.

I thought I'd feel differently about this FA period, that I'd want Darcy's feet to the fire - but I think 'who I want' is actually 'who I don't want'. And that's Tim Connolly. He needs to be dumped for whatever we can get. I don't care if it's a 7th-round pick in 2030. It's a salary dump. And Stafford, too. Get whatever you can. This is about showing the rest of the group that they're not untouchable, and that they have to work harder.

Who I want? Bring up all of the following:

Ennis

Gerbe

Mancari

McCormick

Create this lineup:

Lines:

Vanek Roy Pominville

Kennedy Ennis Kaleta

Hecht Gaustad Grier

Gerbe McCormick Mancari

Ellis

Weber Myers

Sekera Montador

Butler Rivet

Gragnani

This would be a VERY young team. We would not win the division. We may not even make the playoffs. But there would be energy and passion, much like the '05-'06 team. And we would immediately see who's ready to perform, and who's ready to go. And with half of these guys RFAs this year, it's time to give them their shot or send them out. Then, at next year's FA period, you lose the dead weight and bulk up on some of the choice FAs in that class (as has been mentioned in another thread) with the money you've saved. And you will still have room to sign any of our young guys to long-term contracts if they continue their upward mobility (Ennis, Myers, maybe even Gerbe, Weber).

Just my 2 cents.

McCormick is going to be a UFA. Also get rid of Gerbe while he's healthy. He will never last a full season.

On McCormick - true, but he can be brought back cheaply. I think he's a bit of a sleeper 4th-liner. We could improve on him on talent, but maybe not on value. I think he's worth a 1-year contract to see if he can do what he did against Boston consistently.

On Gerbe - I think you're overreacting on the injury-front, but I'm not completely opposed to trading him, as long as we get a good piece in return. He was the AHL rookie-of-the-year, and he has a lot of upside. If he gets an extended chance at the NHL level, he should open some eyes and have good value.

Out of curiousity, I decided to check the list of AHL rookie of the year winners. What a mixed bag that is.

And I'm not trying to make any point about his future by posting that list, just wanted to share it.

Compensation for Offer Sheets: If an RFA signs an offer sheet from a different team, the original team is entitled to compensation in the form of draft picks from the next year's draft (All figures are estimates, and change each season):

  • Offer sheet < $860,000 annually: No compensation
  • Offer sheet between $860,000 - $1.3 million annually: 3rd round pick
  • Offer sheet between $1.3 million - $2.6 million annually: 2nd round pick
  • Offer sheet between $2.6 million - $4 million annually: 1st and 3rd round pick
  • Offer sheet between $4 million - $5.2 million annually: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick
  • Offer sheet between $5.2 million - $6.5 million annually: Two 1sts, one 2nd, and one 3rd round pick
  • Offer sheet > $6.5 million annually: Four 1st round picks

The amount is determined by taking the total compensation due in the Offer Sheet, and dividing by the number of years specified in the Offer Sheet, or five (5) - whichever is less.

I would think these went up a bit with the cap recently. I'll check it out.

I did some searching and found only those numbers, but they were from 2008-2009, wasn't sure if they had changed since.

Mike Comrie is a Locker room Cancer that was chased out of Long Island because he didn't want to work. He'd show up to play the Sabres every time because he still had some Ottawa left in him. I'd rather keep Connolly.

Tyra, the folks in Edmonton and Ottawa must be gluttons for punishment. Both teams brought Mike Comrie back.

Perhaps the Sabres would benefit most from Comrie donning a Bruins jersey.

Perhaps we sign Paul Martin. He'd be solid.

He is the one guy that I want badly in this free agent class. He could play on the top d-pairing with Myers, and be our #1 pp qb.

Matt Cullen would be a solid pick up as well. He could center the 3rd line and play the point on the 2nd pp.

Names all over the place, let's put them in one thread. The I wants and why's.

I want Centers:

Matt Cullen, 2.875 last year, 6'-1" 200 lbs, vet leader at 33, still putting up 40+ pts, 58.7% FO%

Manny Malhotra, 700k last year, 6'-2" 220lbs, 62.5% FO

I want Right wing:

Lee Stempniak, 3.5 mill last year, 6'-0" 195 lbs, 16 PPP past 2 seasons

Colby Armstrong, 2.4M last year, PP and PK

Owen Nolan, vet, 26 PPP over last two years

Niclas Bergfors, 14 PPP 09-10

I want Left Wing:

Alex Frolov, 4M last year, 6'-2" 204lbs, over 50 pts/yr since 05-06

Alexei Ponikarovsky, 6'-4", 220 lbs, 2.5M last year, iffy I know.

I want Defense:

Joe Corvo, age 33, 2.75 last year, PP guy

Kurtis Foster, 6'-5" 223 lbs, 26 PPP, 20minutes/game, 28 yr old ufa 900k last year.

Andrei Markov, not UFA, but still want.

Kaberle, blah blah blah

I girl can dream can't she?

He said nice and simple,

So I agree centers is a good place to start Manny or Cullen are not bad choices but I think the Sabres need better point producers from that position... Saku Koivu is available.

and Wingers would not be bad LW Lee Stempniak, Colby Armstrong or Alexander Frolov

and Pavol Demetria can produce when not hurt...

Sign Kotalik for 800K, put him on the 4th line? He may be able to chip in 10-15 goals a year.

Or, I could always substitute Gerbe in for one of the 3rd/4th liners if I'm looking for more scoring.

Maybe his being waived could be a wake up call? I never disliked Kotalik, he size and toughness when properly motivated made him a really good forward. A small financial risk worth taking.

I am going to toss this out there. How about a fourth line of Kotalik, Cheechoo and Moreau? If you can get each for about a million per? I would gamble on that.

I'll throw this out there. If this is the best Darcy can do, he should resign immediately.

Wanted Horton. Boston get him.

Wanted Kaberle. We wont get him.

Wanted Patrick Sharp. Atlanta ruined everything.

I suppose we'll end up signing Joe Corvo if nothing better comes his way.

Darcy will have his garbage picking gloves on come July 2nd.

Bank on it.
