GDT: Capitals @ Sabres - Feb. 26, 2023, 1pm, MSG, WGR

Hinny getting called up while Asplund still sits in the press box pretty much seals Asplund’s fate here. Cozens needs a playmaker on his wing. I would like to see Mitts and him together. Hinny’s Speed complimented them well today. -

Massive Character win today. Quinn, Hinny stepping up their game. Cozens is a heart and soul guy. Krebs is really coming on. -
This makes sense. We have been spoiled with so much success over the past 12 years that the Hockey Gods felt it was only fair to take Dahlin and Tuch away to hamper the Sabres chances this year. You have to spread the wealth.😛🤮

Talbot has a 69% quality start percentage which is 4th in the NHL behind Linus Ullmark, Connor Hellebuyck, and Filip Gustavsson. I would feel much better with him in net then Comrie. Wsh hammering NYR. Jensen might not be available. Have to slap the Caps around tomorrow😀
-
Comrie for Talbot. He can be the kid of the Anderson-Talbot tandem😁

One report said Vancouver or Anaheim. Also Meier talks are reportedly picking up steam, NJ still the front runner.

If Krebs and Quinn could both put on 10lbs of muscle this offseason both should have big breakouts next season -

The top line carried the team in the Florida Games. Giving up 50+ shots to a team without their top 2 centres is not good. Have to clean up the defensive end still. -
I wouldn’t move Quinn but JJ would be on the table for the right deal. Kulich And Rousek are guys that are knocking on the door and can fill a similar role. Im in no way saying give JJ away but in the right deal (Meier) I would part with him.
-
This would be a solid move
-
I’m out of the loop, did Jeremy say Sabres are considering moving Quinn?

Thank You Mr Anderson😀 I don’t know how Granato is going to cobble this goaltending situation to get them to the finish line. Kings beat Isles in regulation -

So who the heck starts in net against Florida? -
“Hi Nashville, we notice you have a 5’11 Finnish goalie. Boy that is small for today’s NHL. Tell you what. We have a 6’4 Finnish goalie, perfect size for today’s NHL. He even has 3 names. We would be willing to swap out of the goodness of our heart. Might even throw in a prospect or pick as well”😛

HERe are the highlights of the game this morning. Some good Savoie highlights including him being robbed of a 3rd goal. ICE now 45-7-1 on the season.
-
They both have tremendous hockey sense and play well off of each other. Benson wins a lot of battles down low and defensively. Savoie uses his speed to retrieve pucks and Benson reads off of him in those situations and finds open ice.
-
Savoie finishes with 2 goals and an assist. 1 PP goal and one SH goal. Apparently the Savoie-Benson duo are scoring more short handed then they are allowing. Benson is an interesting player. He doesn’t have Savoie’s electric speed even though they are the same size. A lot of his game is about outworking players for pucks. I just wonder about 5’9-5’10 guys outworking/outbodying NHL guys for pucks. He will be long gone before Buffalo picks. He is a talented kid but Buffalo has enough small forwards in the pipeline. If he somehow fell to Buffalo’s spot you run to grab him and then move someone else. He has great chemistry with Savoie. For those that don’t watch though don’t think that because Benson has more points that he is the superior player to Savoie.

I love the part about Patrick using him to take away the other team’s best player. Between that and the PK usage sounds like he is rounding out his game. He is strong at the faceoff dot as well. He will always be an explosive offensive talent. Rounding out the rest of his game will make him even more valuable.

Novikov-Komarov future 3rd pairing😀

“Sabres prospect Matt Savoie ‘just scratching the surface’ as he finds another gear” So Savoie is refining his game here in Winnipeg under the guidance of Patrick, who played more than 1,200 NHL games and more than 300 of those with the Sabres. After a 90-point season a year ago, he’s scoring at a similar rate this season. The production wasn’t there early in the year, but Patrick thinks Savoie has found a different gear since the new year. “I haven’t seen any better (in the WHL),” Patrick said. “I know (Connor) Bedard has been on a tear since he got back from world juniors. Next to him, I haven’t seen a better player than Sav.” What stands out to Patrick is the way Savoie can shut down another team’s top line. Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams has referred to the competitiveness with which Savoie plays, and that’s been on display for the Ice. Patrick routinely uses him to take away the best player on another team and likes having him on the penalty kill. “I felt in the first half of the year he would get a point or two a game,” Patrick said. “He’d make one real good play, a top-end play, but I think he should be making seven or eight of them a game. I know he had a game this year where he got six points. I had kind of been waiting for that type of game up until that point. I don’t know if that was a turning point because I know the next night he had a tough night. But I know he’s just pushing himself to be a dominant player. He’s not content. He’s not happy with where he’s at. He wants to get better, but his confidence has gone to another level right now.” This boost in confidence and production coincided with Savoie being left off Canada’s roster for the World Junior Championship. Savoie wasn’t even invited to the selection camp. “I don’t know how he doesn’t get invited to the camp,” Patrick said. “They made the right decision because in the end they won. I think they said these six or seven guys are going to be our offensive guys and then we’re picking checkers and energy guys and penalty killers. And that’s how they put the team together. Is he better than players who are on that team? Yes. It’s not even close. I think he’s used that rejection in his favor. It’s motivated him to be as good as he has.” Savoie watched the tournament from home to cheer on his friends who were on the team and support his country. But he also acknowledged that he’s been driven to further show that he is every bit as good, if not better, than players who were picked for that team. He has 13 goals and 15 assists in the 18 games since the calendar flipped to 2023. “I think the biggest thing is just possessing the puck more, having the puck on my stick and making them come take it off of me instead of throwing a blind pass in the middle or just making a turnover,” Savoie said. “I think at the next level, keeping puck possession is so important. When you first enter the NHL or AHL, wherever it is, you don’t get as many puck touches. I think making the most of whenever you have the puck and whenever you have possession.” Savoie noted he’s started to feel the impact of all the time spent in the gym getting stronger. After spending most of the summer rehabbing a shoulder injury, he didn’t have the time to build as much muscle as he would have with a healthy summer. Patrick said he wants to see Savoie continue to build his stamina so that he can continue to make plays when he’s been on the ice 30 or 40 seconds. “When he’s exhausted can he still make plays?” Patrick said. “You look at the great players, they do that.”

💩 now we don’t get the epic meltdowns about Johnson signing somewhere else, the “I told you so” posts some have had saved for 6 months now, the “this is why you never draft a college player” posts. Fingers crossed that he changes his mind and goes somewhere else.😛
-
Or we can just be thrilled that we have both of them for the foreseeable future😀

The thing is White’s tweet was in response to a guy’s tweet who has a private account. So no one can see the original tweet to understand what White’s response means.

Savoie’s ICE are now 44-7-1 on the season and have played the least amount of games in the league.
