Just wondering aloud a bit here, but I have to imagine GOP leadership would have preferred a quiet election year rather than the absolute chaos that is going on right now. They were getting everything they wanted. They were getting their federal court justices. They are getting their Supreme Court. They might even get another SCOTUS appointment if RBG doesn't hang on. They might have even managed a relatively easy win in the fall. Trump's continued mishandling of COVID and the continued assault on American citizens by federal law enforcement is not going to be easy for someone as dumb as him to handle in debates in the fall. Joe Biden isn't a particularly compelling candidate, and in fact I think he sucks, but Trump is giving out political ammunition that even Sleepy Joe can deploy and come off looking patriotic while not going too far left. The best thing Trump could have done was tread water and keep liberals and the left focused on fighting each other. Six months ago simply opposing Trump as a platform was not going to be enough and it was all the Democrats had. Now it's probably the only thing they actually need.

I think what kills me is that the current state of COVID is a direct result of politics, so it's essentially impossible to separate the two now and silly to try.

Skunks are actually pretty chill. Did you know a litter of skunks is called a surfeit?

My uncle is a trapper and he says baby skunks have the stuff, but they don't know how to use it. They'll let out like a little "fart" but they can't aim and shoot like the adults. Even the adults aren't going to be too trigger happy since it takes them time to replenish. You really have to make them mad to get sprayed.

I don't know if the Sabres being a team that can pay players more money for less term is generally an advantage either. Typically you want to be able to offer term to keep costs lower. But if players are looking at the market and saying "I'm not going to get that much more from the Sabres" I think they'll be more inclined to sign 1 year deals for less money on better teams that let them boost their earning potential for the next FA cycle. I think the only players who might be interested in short term for more cash with the (very bad!) Sabres are players who aren't sure they're going to be able to do better in a year. Guys who are close to washed.

I think you're missing the bigger picture, which is that players don't want to go to a team that needs to sign half a roster. I think players are much more likely to sign with a team that has been competitive, or is very close to being competitive. They will want to be that last piece on a good team and they will shun the Sabres to do it. Who wants to be the first player to sign with Buffalo? I bet a lot of agents will be encouraging their clients to hold out on Buffalo/ look elsewhere, since it's going to be a buyers market anyway. I don't think this situation is advantageous for Buffalo.

I'm less inclined to think this was true these days. Part of me thinks Botterill wanted to move O'Reilly without paying the bonus to prove that he was the GM that the Pegulas hired. I think he genuinely thought this move was a stroke of genius.

It's not just the RFAs. They have to fill out a full roster. That includes the bottom six guys. That cap space is going to disappear fast, especially with Okposo and Hutton taking up 8.75 mil.
