I know it's supposed to be Fantastic Friday, but the news of Anthony Bourdain's suicide today is just too much. Bourdain was a genuinely good dude, which is a really hard reputation to build when you're a celebrity who is on the road and working as much as he was. He leaves behind an 11 year old daughter and a legacy of being a super empathetic journalist and champion of this planet's diversity. Such a loss for the world.

I had to go to a funeral for a buddy's 4 year old daughter back about 10 years ago now. That funeral was harder than any of my own grandparents funerals. Absolutely soul crushing. He's such a good dude and I know he still carries that pain.

I'm looking forward to getting around to fixing my stereo in my car soon. I still buy cars with CD players because I like spinning albums while driving. It used to be my favorite pastime back in college. Walkman on the middle of the front seat with the cassette deck adapter thing and a visor full of burned copies of CD's I had at home (didn't want to ruin the original CDs so I would make copies of them.)

Personally, I have no desire to go back to an open catch-all politics thread like we had before. That thing was a mess and invited trolls. I want to talk Politics again, but not like that.

One way to accomplish this would be to do what another forum I'm on does: a paid membership section. Charge $15/yr so that the more dedicated members of this forum have somewhere more lightly moderated to discuss more personal topics with one another. Call us "Supporting Members" or something and use our desire to talk more freely as a way to fund the site.

Right. It's absolutely unavoidable right now in daily life. It impacts all of our hobbies, our jobs, our families. It's been 18 months. The "cooling off period" should be over with. I think we've behaved ourselves well enough in that interval to earn a shot at having a sub-forum of some kind. I would like to be able to talk about these things with my friends on here. I don't think that's too much to ask.

We could have a Politics sub-forum buried with all the other sub-forums that no one reads. But that would make too much sense.
