Colten Ellis Love Fest

Think the guy deserves a thread at this point. 

Is he "The Guy" long term? Way too early to tell, but there's a lot to like about him in the few games we've now seen...

• Good positioning
• Moves reasonably well laterally
• Seems to have pretty quick reflexes
• Strong rebound control
• Plays aggressively, but not overly so
• Doesn't seem to get rattled and/or intimidated
• The team seems to have confidence in him in net and I think it shows in their play in front of him

I'm not saying he's the next Hasek or Miller by any stretch, but he's shown enough to me that he should be our guy until he gives a reason not to be. 

Maybe he's the Sabres' Doug Flutie...just hopefully with a longer shelf life.

I would let him have the net for a while here. We know what Lyon is. See what the kid can do

He certainly played like a top goaltender...at least for tonight.

Intelligent too.  Makes smart hockey plays, especially when handling the puck.  UPL typically rims it around the boards to the opposing team while Ellis actually passes it to a teammate more often than not.

He's 3-1 in his short career, with a .914 Sv%.  Sounds good, but he also has a 2.76 GAA which tells me that the Sabres are still giving up too many shots, but are mostly able to overcome that with him in net (more confident with him, leading to more goals?)  His one loss against Utah was a game that the Sabres totally played like doo-doo.

Interesting:  He's played almost exactly the same amount of time as UPL.  Compare their stats:

Also interesting that comparing GAA, he is just behind our friend Eric Comrie, and he's also played virtually the same amount of minutes.

That's what I said in the game thread. Time to end the nonsense with too many goalies and just get rid of UPL. It's Ellis Lyon until it's Ellis Levi. 

I've also been saying we need to pick up waiver guys now and again in all positions. There have been some decent gambles out there in the last few years and we could have easily built a decent bottom 6 without making trades.

No stat is perfect, but if I had to pick my favorite stat to evaluate goalies, its not gaa, its not save percentage, but I'd lean toward goals saved above average. 

So far this year in Goals saved above average:

Lyon: +0.91

Ellis: +1.24

UPL:  -2.15 (all of last season he was a -2.53)

Small sample size. Not a 'perfect' stat.  But at this point, if there were any 'takers' for UPL, I'd move him.

If no takers with retention, waive UPL and send him to Rochester when the roster gets tight.  If he there's no interest with retention, no one is going to snap him up off waivers.  And if they do, waive bye bye to his whole salary for this year and the next three years.  I want to say "What was Kevyn thinking???"  But we all know what he was thinking.  He was looking back at losing Ullmark and didn't want that to happen again.
