Off Season OT: New wave Playlist

The Damned never, ever were New Wave.  Straight punk, even through that last album when Sensible (obviously but not publicly) relinquished creative control in a vain effort to sell a record or two.

I realise what the OP is after in this thread, but Punk and New Wave are very hard to separate and he is looking for music in the last years of real punk to the techno age.

The Damned certainly changed styles through their time and had a more gothic rock sound in the 1980s.  It started with the departure of Brian James after their second album.  He was the creative force of the punkiest formation in 1976/77.

I actually have every song suggested so far except the Specials.  We can always create a spotify playlist.  "Sabrespace New Wave" I agree on the Damned.

Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star

Berlin - Masquerade

The Call - The Walls Came Down

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen

The La's - There She Goes

Marshall Crenshaw - Someday, Someway

You did include my 2 Specials suggestions, but not the UK pop reggae UB40 (although my suggestions are old enough to be considered straight reggae, so maybe that is the issue).

No playlist of this era needs to include Blue Monday by New Order, IMO.

And the incident that inspired the song (the suicide of Ian Curtis)

Agree on all three. I like UB40. Must have just missed the original post sorry. Divine? Really?

OMD has been mentioned, but not their signature tune from 1980 ...

Stephen Tin Tin ...

little known fact ... 'they' wanted him to be the front man for a new band that 'they' were putting together.  Duran Duran and he told 'them' to shove it and he put out this tune.

I love this Joe too ...

None ya idjits have mentioned The Tubes yet. White punks on dope, or if radio hits are more your thing, Talk to ya later.

Great 70's and 80's music, but more hard rock and later pop music.  Not really new wave.  White Punks on Dope is on my metal/hard rock playlist from the 70's.

Can't say I've ever heard that categorized as hard rock.  Punk, maybe.

I think this is the most accurate description.

And, Roxy Music?  I love the Roxy Music, but if they are anything but Glam Rock I will be a monkey's uncle.   :P

Even after they kind of mellowed by Avalon they will always be Glam Rock, IMO.  That said, it's not my list.

Blade's XM Channel, First Wave, is my new go to when the comedy stations get lame. Several of my favorites (Especially Blue Monday) have been posted, so I'll try and scrap up some more.

  • XTC - Making Plans for Nigel
  • Bananaram - Cruel Summer
  • Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Right Round
  • Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus
  • Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Two Tribes/Welcome to the Pleasure Dome
  • Wall of Voodoo - Mexican Radio

All great choices.

Blades autobiography is one of the reason's I started this thread.  Listening to 1st Wave made me realize how many great songs I had forgotten about like Love& Pride by King or the Jam's a Town Called Malice.  That's why I started this list.  Keep making suggestions.

A couple of more standards

REM - Losing My Religion - GA

Billy Idol - Dancing With Myself - GA

Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill - GA

Peter Gabriel - Shock the Monkey - GA

Lena anyone?

NS - Really cool song.  I don't I've ever heard it before.  I'll add it to the list!

I also added the UB40 song - They are Reggae, but they got alot of airplay on college new wave stations and KROQ.

I change Captain Sensible to the original Elton Motello and added a note about Plastic Betrand's french "version" Ca Plane Pour Moi.

Great songs less remembered

Never Say Never - Romeo Void

China- Red Rockers

Dancing In Heaven - Q-Feel

The Nails - 88 lines About 44 Women

Jo Boxer - Just Got Lucky

The Bongos - Numbers With Wings

Bryan Ferry- Slave to Love

I also add more songs from DJ Keith's list and the two song above from NS.

We are now at 170 songs - at least 130 to go.  Many classics remain available for nomination.

Also please note that song:

97, 124, and 135 are being replaced because they were nominated twice, the dups were all taken from DJ Keith's list and therefore the 3 replacements will be as well

Replacements

97) Level 42 - Something About You - DJ Keith

124) ABC - Look of Love - DJ Keith

135) Men at Work - Down Under - DJ Keith
