GAME DISCUSSION THREAD

I can't get over how we look like the team that played last night not Boston. How can we not at home find that extra gear to just drive the net and get it done. This is the time we should look like the fresher team.

A home-ice advantage would be nice. The Sabres tend not to lift the fans, and it sure as hell doesn't go the other way very often. Buffalo fans are kings of the We Want Seven chant but love to sit on their hands when things aren't going well.

We are the team of one pass too many. Just amazing after all these years of hockey they don't know a good hard shot on net produces rebounds that players skating to the net can pounce on.

I was going to post something about this. Lindy needs to work on some rebound drills or something. The Sabres miss a lot of big juicy rebounds. Pucks either go into skates or just out of reach. Maybe back off the crashing of the net a little. Opposing goalies also could be smartly deflecting shots into areas the Sabres can't get to. In too tight? Beyond frustrating.

This might be the worst odd-man rush team in the league.

RJ wasn't on tonight so I had to watch the Boston feed. Those guys are terrible. I'm not sure what the announcer's name is but he couldn't

identify why they stopped the game on at least three occasions. He didn't know or even guess whether it was a penalty, an offsides or what

plus he falsley ID'ed a Bruins goal that wasn't... him and that snickering sidekick Brickley -- what a bunch of homers. Missed RJ !

lucky you.. blacked out here unfortunately

in NESN's defense though, they are by far NOT the worst pair to listen to

I've got NHL GameCenter and it's a flip of the coin who you get to listen to. Sometimes it's fun listening to the out of town guys to see their perspective on the game but if they suck you have no choice. I didn't think the Boston crew was that bad, but what was really annoying is they are nauseatingly pro-Boston. I swear Boston could have given up 5 goals in 2 minutes and they would find some way to concentrate on a good forecheck without even mentioning the fact that they actually let in 5 goals, lol. Then to top it off, they'd throw in a bunch of words like splendid, outstanding, miraculous, stupendous.......... they love their thesaurus.

BTW, the Philly announcers have been the worst so far this year.

I did love the fact that they were so sure that Boston scored the one goal where the puck was under Miller yet had no idea where it actually was........ until they saw the replay for the fourth time and the puck was at least a foot and a half from the goal line.

That's weird, I got CI and I had both feeds. I guess it depends on your satellite/cable provider??

Either way, as bad as Edwards and the Brick are, nobody is worse than Bobby "The Chief" Taylor of the Lightning. That guy cries like a fat kid who just had his birthday cake stolen from him. It's disgusting.

Anyone else want Sekera back instead of Lydman? I don't know, he just doesn't do it for me anymore... Bring on the Sabre killers, I mean Ottawa... damn it.

Mike Grier, come back. Please! Your team needs you. I know you read SabreSpace.

I thought the exact same thing halfway through the 3rd period.

I also think Miller needs help, big time. I know the other team is a big reason the Sabres don't score on every opportunity, but they need to cash in a few times. I thought Miller was razor sharp again, but his team wasn't helping him. Don't keep putting the pressure on him to win the games all by himself.

Tonight:

  • MacArthur Bad
  • Vanek Good
  • Lucic Good - Dammit!
  • Quiet Crowd

Can't continue to lose at home like these last two.

Take the point and bump it up to two points for tomorrow night's win.

Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow.

"Quiet crowd." You were there, right? Would you please join the fray in the crowd noise thread and straighten out eleven? He wasn't there but still thinks it was loud.

"I'll straighen you out, you little prick" -- Ogie Oglethorpe.

Seriously, there is no way that the crowd was as quiet at the arena as it seemed on TV, which was the point of the other thread. I've been to six games, and except for moments of dullness (it also has been quiet during dull moments at MSG and MCI Center, the two other NHL venues I've attended), the crowd is as into it as it always was. Is it always as loud as a game-tying goal with seconds left? Of course not.

Are you literally saying the noise coming out of your TV is not as loud as the sound in the building itself? :)

I don't know what this is about anymore. It doesn't seem too controversial to say HSBC Arena is not a place where the fans really get into it -- by making noise, chanting, singing, jeering, standing, whatever. I wouldn't hold it up as one of the hot spots in hockey. Heck, you'd probably pick half a dozen college venues over the best crowds in the NHL. You college fans can readily point them out, I'm sure.

I'll ask again, how many other arenas have you been to?

I've been to four and HSBC is the loudest on a regular basis (for the record, Madison Square Garden is a morgue).

I also do audio for TV. I've even done the sound for an Islanders game. Listening to different games on CI, there is a wide range of "styles" that you hear. Some engineers stress the crowd, some stress the announcers, and others, like the Sabres home engineer, stress the on ice sound. Knowing him personally I know this to be true.

This reminds me too much of stenbaro's posts. It is not the fan's fault when the Sabres lose.

I am curious about his myself.

There have been some stadia that artificially add to the crowd noise for strategic reasons (Metrodome comes to mind).

There are also ones that pump it in for broadcast enhancement (audio viagra).

At Ralph Wilson, there are two large speakers that were installed recently (last three years or so).

They are at the top of the home side bathroom towers.

The PA is so annoying loud  for us (OK, myself) on the visitor side balcony, that I wear noise-reduction earbuds just to baffle it.

There are no speakers on the visitor side towers, so I am guessing it is for the broadcasts.

????

I think crowd noise and winning go hand in hand. Bottom line is that the last 2 years have left a lot of Sabres fans feeling betrayed. They aren't going to go crazy for this team until they feel like they can believe in them again.

Having said that, I've attended games in 9 NHL venues and I'd venture that HSBC is in the 2nd tier of arenas (with probably about 8 or so others) in terms of crowd enthusiasm, with Montreal by itself in the first tier.

I completely disagree about MSG. I've attended quite a few games there since the lockout and the fans are knowledgeable and passionate. Of course, if you went there during a season when they really stunk, I'd expect a morgue-like atmosphere. NJ, OTOH, is lame even though the team is good every year.
