  1. I've always been a proponent of manual trannys - but, driving many vehicles with manuals over the years took its toll on my lower back. Fortunately, my current vehicle has a dual-clutch automated manual. (In fact, it is the only transmission available in the car). Now this is not a torque-converter automatic with shift paddles; this is a genuine F1 type gearbox with seven cogs that you can shift yourself OR allow the car to do the shifting for you. Nice. (But if you can, learn to drive a manual transmission - they are fun!)
  2. In the original broadcast of the series, most of the songs were the real thing by the original bands. (Yes, I have been around long enough to have seen the original series broadcast on CBS). Subsequent syndication runs required that new, generic music be grafted in, as the rights to that music were only negotiated for the original broadcasts and network re-runs. In fact, there is an episode where the station runs a "name those songs" contest. In the original broadcasts, the music clips (short as they were) were real rock songs by the original artists. The contest winner named all of the songs/artists and they were indeed the "real deal". Syndicated episodes substituted fake songs and artists. Kind of sad, really. When the first season of WKRP was about to come out on DVD, much ado was made about the original music being included. No luck. Rights to the songs were reported to be prohibitively expensive at the time. There must have been a boatload of negotiating done to get the rights to the 80% of the original music stated to be included in this DVD release. Now, we'll see if they were able to get the rights to include Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" in the episode where Les Nessman prepares to take Jennifer to the Silver Sow awards banquet...a classic scene.
  3. My complaint is that there isn't anybody else with a complaint today.... ...just kidding.
  4. ABC/Good Morning America now reporting that the number of possible exposures to the Ebola case in Texas is over 100. Say, if you want to give yourself a good pre-Halloween scare, read the first few chapters of Stephen King's "The Stand" this weekend. (You can stop when the supernatural stuff starts). King's account of how a rogue virus spreads to the entire country hits way too close to home.
  5. Mmm..Straub. I was introduced to Straub when I was going to school down in PA. It is probably the most refreshing beer I ever had (ice cold, of course). Every once in a while when I make a trip back to my folks home town, I pick up a case.
  6. You do know that the entire series is coming out on DVD in October with about 80% of the original music restored... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KYCA4QY/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1/189-2067174-5164722?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_r=1R5V92BM7CM19Y144YE1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=1535523722&pf_rd_i=B000MXPE6U
  7. I think TN would give it to Gionta, but being a newcomer, maybe only an "A" for him. Moulson because he did play for the team before (well, for a few months, anyway). Ennis is the other alternate - he seems like he could be a leader and he often discusses plays with the officials anyway. I think Myers should just concentrate on playing his game - he's already shown he is easily sidetracked. The burden of wearing the "C" could adversely affect his play.
  8. I loved Barney Miller. It was never fall-down funny; just done with a very wry wit. Dietrich was my favorite character. I never missed an episode of Cheers when it was on originally, but I've seen some re-runs and the show did not age well. (On the other hand, Friends is often as funny now as it was back in the '90s. God, has it been that long? And Aniston is STILL a knockout!) I also never missed Seinfeld, but when i watch re-runs now, I see why everyone in the final episode disliked them. They did some pretty mean things.
  9. I don't watch the show, but I'm guessing at the story line: some tragic thing happens that creates these zombies, and the people that aren't zombies try to kill the zombies (who are already dead  ) or they get bitten and become zombies. Sorry if I spoiled the plot for anyone.
  10. My birthday is at the end of September. It wasn't until about two years ago that I found out there was a really bad snow storm in early January of my birth year. My parents had just moved into their new house and didn't have a TV (only a radio) or even a living room set. My brain finally put 2 and 2 together. Apparently, I was a blizzard baby...
  11. Actually, I've always hated that "cream" color on sports uniforms. It always makes me think the equipment manager forgot to put the Tide in the washing machine before laundering the jerseys... :P
  12. Shoot, by then the Bills will have moved to Toronto and become the Toros. And I won't care so much how EJ plays....
  13. OK, so 12 starts isn't enough - give us a number. 20? 30? 50? I guess I would be more amenable to giving EJ a little longer to develop IF he showed improvment game-by-game. He's still thowing passes into the outstretched arms of the defensive line. He misses short passes that are supposed to be nearly as safe as a hand-off. You can count on one hand the number of long balls he throws each game. Right now, I'd pencil EJ in as starter for games 1 - 4. If he improves each game, add another game. (If he has a good outing on week one, pencil him in for game 5, etc.) If he whiffs four games straight, bring in the veteran. Frankly, I like the kid - I'd like to see him succeed. But is it fair to the other players on the team (not to mention fans) to suffer through another lousy season just trying to get EJ going? We know this Bills team is not Super Bowl material, but that doesn't mean the players don't want to win (or at least play well enough to win).
  14. I agree - just because a city has a huge population does not mean that hockey will thrive, or even survive, there. Let's hope the NHL has learned from (both of) the Atlanta debacles and makes sure it expands to a place that will actually appreciate and support a team. (Not to mention that it looks really awful on TV to see an 18,000+ seat arena 3/4 empty, even when the home team is playing well enough to get into the playoffs). Frankly, I don't think there is any need to expand - there are several NHL teams that should be moved from their current cities (Panthers, cough, cough, Hurricanes, hack...) to places that would definitely be more involved in those teams. Quebec leaps to mind.
  15. Surgeons are well known to be SOBs - I think it is a pre-requisite when applying for a surgical residency. I will say thay my MD is not only a good doctor, but a great guy. We've had some very interesting talks in the office. He's a few years younger than I am and has a pretty offbeat sense of humor. All of the nurses/medical assistants who work in his office love him, and that's a very good sign that he is, yes, awesome. I feel very lucky to have found him.
  16. It has been on the phone for a while, but Samsung phones have a translator app built in. You can either type or speak your phrase (or pick pre-loaded ones) and the app will translate to text or will speak the translation. I'm sure there are other apps like this available on both iOS and Android, but for a freebie, it works pretty well. Choosing between iPhone and Android has always been mostly a personal preference, but Samsung has come up with some pretty good features lately. (I have the Galaxy Note 3, which has a stylus you can write, draw or point with. I don't use it a lot, but it's nice to have it when you need it. Ever try signing your name on an iPhone with your finger?).
  17. I think that guy in the logo lives in my neighborhood....
  18. The man was a unique talent - he really set the comedy world on its ear when he broke out. Others before him did impressions, voices and characters, but Robin Williams did all three in one sentence. The fact that he could act, really seriously act was both a surprise and a delight. The entertainment world was never the same after he came along. He will be sorely missed and fondly thought of.
  19. The names "Bashers" and "Bruisers" certainly would have been more appropriate... Also, slightly off-off-topic - has anyone seen the new Tampa Bay Bucs uniforms? Horrid.
  20. I have five of the eight: The two players are Floyd Smith (Sabres' captain) and Jean Beliveau (Canadiens captain). The person dropping the puck is Seymour Knox III. The white-haired gentleman behind Floyd Smith is Buffalo Mayor Frank Sedita and to his right is Channel 7 Sports director Rick Azar. The three men in the left background...well, I can guess but it would be a wild-a$$ guess.
  21. Bring back Sammy the Sabre! (and the Ice Dancers, too - thanks!)
  22. ...but a big upgrade from a Timonen who can't play due to the clots. :)
  23. Per this article - I did not know that the Sabres were "famous for their terrible uniforms". Yeah, the slug logo sucked, but the jerseys that the logo was on were OK. And I admit to not liking the switch to black, red and silver in the 90s but the sweaters themselves were cool. (The original and current Sabres' jerseys are still awesome). Yes, Vancouver had those weird jerseys with the giant "V" on the front and the logos on the sleeves. THOSE were terrible. (While we're at it, the current LA Kings jerseys are a snooze-fest. Any jersey that looks the same in black-and-white and color photos does not have a lot going for it. Good thing the team plays well...)
  24. The thing I don't quite understand - I thought I read that the Bills wanted to give Manuel a lot of work in the pre-season since he missed so much time last season with injuries. So why then did he only play, what, two series? Did we need to see Tule for 2+ quarters? The Hall of Fame Game is more of an exhibition than a pre-season game; Manuel should have been in for the entire first half. How is he going to get "game experience" sitting on the sidelines? To quote Elmer Fudd, "Say, there's something awfuwwy scwewy going on awound hewe...."
  25. Sorry, I have to throw the grammar flag - poultry refers to chickens and other birds raised for food, paltry means insignificant. If this was a simple misspelling or was done for effect, I withdraw the flag. Otherwise...
