  1. But the cap hit for those two would be 7.25M. Might as well give that an extra $1M to keep Pesce.
  2. I agree, he loves the Canes. But, I think changing agents is a bit much for a scare tactic. And he’s likely going to be way more likely to give the Canes the hometown discount rather than the Sabres. He’s going to be costly.
  3. So, what would this take? Savoie, Kulich, or Mitts? I would lean towards Savoie. Not that I’ve given up, but he’s gonna take awhile to fully develop. Kulich is much further along.
  4. Anyone have a good handle on the Canes cap situation? What can they afford to sign him for or are they going to be able to take an salary away from us?
  5. Here’s a good article on the situation: https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/carolina-hurricanes/analysis/would-the-carolina-hurricanes-actually-consider-trading-brett-pesce
  6. I wonder if we have any other players repped by Moldaver. Guy sounds like a hard ass and wouldn’t exactly fit into KA’s model of signing team friendly contracts. Pesce has no connection to the Sabres, so don’t see why he would sign a fair contract with them. The Canes don’t overpay for players and neither do we. Don’t know why this would change. This is probably little more than KA inquiring what the cost of his next contract would be.
  7. This is easy, but hindsight is 20/20. Should’ve protected Toker/Houser/Hutton over Ullmark. KA should’ve had a better gauge he was going to sign elsewhere. Judging by their goalie shopping spree that offseason, Seattle wouldn’t have been able to resist and would’ve taken Ullmark and we would’ve retained Borgen.
  8. To say that it was the Sabres and not Eichel that drove his dysfunction is laughable. The Sabres have proved this to be wrong - there has been no dysfunction since he left. Eichel had an attitude problem and he decided early on to dig in his heels. He had been on teams with Donnie as a coach and could’ve played under him as a HC. He chose not to, not the Sabres. His trade demands predated any hint of injury. He gave up on the team and decided he wasn’t going to part of any solution. He’s playing better because he’s a decent talent and he really has no other choice (is he gonna be passed around like a hot potato?). Plus, he’s been stripped of any leadership responsibilities and is free of any adversity. He just has to play. No face or heart of the franchise. He doesn’t even have to be the best player on the roster (and he isn’t).
  9. Wonder who is going to buy him out of that. I don’t think he can hold financial interests in 2 teams.
  10. I actually agree with your hesitancy. People point out he was injured in 21-22, which is why he was forgettable. However, he replicated this same forgettable performance in the first half of 22-23. So, was it really the injury that derailed his 21-22 season? It’s probably part of it, but it’s certainly not the only reason. That said, I think if we subtracted Mitts from last season and replaced him with a top 4 D, I still don’t think we would’ve made the playoffs. While a top 4 D would’ve been nice, Mitts single-handedly won us a bunch of games down the stretch. We would’ve been toast without him during the final 30 games, especially when Tage was injured.
  11. Maybe there would be some tax savings somehow, but if the owners of the Coyotes was will to sell for $400M to the NHL, he would probably be more interested in selling them for a $1B to someone else. Would be very hard for the NHL to block that if existing owners agreed with the sale (ie moving franchises to a better market).
  12. I don’t like that Vancouver trade at all. Taking on the Meyers contract should be good enough to move down 2 measly spots. We shouldn’t have to additionally throw in Olofsson plus retain half his salary. If they insist on Olofsson, then they take his whole salary and give us Meyers while retaining half his salary.
  13. Is Gibson (the Gibson of the past 4 years) any better than what we already have on our roster? I think this is debatable and definitely not for a cap hit of $6.4M x 4 more years.
  14. Yeah, I think this piece of information we can all agree on to walk away from. Doesn’t happen much around here.
  15. But are multiple sources really reporting this? The above link isn’t an independent link. It’s saying that Chad D is reporting it. It’s probably true, but who else is reporting this?
  16. We do have Savoie, Kulich, Rosen, etc coming down the pipes, but I think they are more of an unknown than Mitts. Bird in the bush… In the worse case scenario, we sign Mitts to a reasonable (ie tradable) contract. If he continues to improve, then great. If he continues to improve, but so does a youngster, you trade one of them. Either way, you’ve developed talent to receive great value back in the trade. We don’t have to decide this anytime soon. Ideally, anyone who we don’t have a spot for but who is decent will be traded for futures to start the cycle all over again. Makes sustainable winning.
  17. No doubt. Hart will be much hungrier that an older guy. But sometimes that hunger comes at the expense of other players. If KA thinks Hart is a standup guy, Hart knows he may be playing for his next contract elsewhere, or even is comfortable sharing the spotlight here, then by all means, bring him in.
  18. I like Hart and do think he would be an improvement over UPL or Comrie. That said, is this the type of player we need? The dude is 24 and likely still has ambitions of being The Guy somewhere. I don’t think this is something we can offer. While competition is good, I don’t see him as a guy who will man the helm until a guy 3 years younger than him is ready to ***** his job away. Will he play nice or be a dick? It may be better bringing in a vet who knows his role. That is, shoulder the load for a couple years, knows he isn’t the future, and who will serve as a mentor to Levi until he can walk on his 2 feet.
  19. I actually think it’s much more to that. I give McBeane 120% credit for identifying and getting Allen. But, minus Allen, I’s skeptical they aren’t a well-built team. I don’t know if this is a reflection of coaching or GMing though. And I do understand this can be said about any NFL playoff team with a franchise QB. The Sabres are a well-built team and they’ll get their due. I still think the Sabres will have more championships than the Bills in 20 years.
  20. It says he has 36 years of prior coaching. By that picture, he must’ve been coaching since the age of 10. Must be a prodigy. Edit: lol. Must be an aged photo. Guy is 60.
  21. I don’t think the “depth” of the draft matters to “outsiders” either. Most drafts have average depth outside of the first few picks and definitely after the first dozen or so picks. That didn’t stop Sabre insiders from picking JJP at #34 in 2020 or Kulich at #28 last draft. I’ll let them roll those dice.
  22. If he goes on LTIR, he would only be useful in 2 main situations. A team (like the former Sabres) looking to get above the floor. Or, a team that wants to stash him until the playoffs (Kucherov him), anfter which activating him would no longer have salary cap implications. However, a team must be cap compliant on day 1 of the season. So, they would have to sign him after the start of the season, or move other players around prior to the start if they signed him prior to the start of the season.
  23. I don’t know if it was the same dude, but whoever in the scouting dept was clamoring to pick JJP and Kulich should get a fat raise.
  24. Put a copy of that pic in JJP’s stall.
