Sure, I just didn't think it would be so sudden. I figured he'd dig in for another week or so and there would be leaks indicating he was going to cave to test the waters of his base. Well, that's what a competent administration would have done, anyway. I think the bigger thing is he legitimately doesn't know how to negotiate without leverage. This is the first time since he took office that he didn't hold all the cards, and he just behaved as though he did. It's not going to get any easier for him, though I suspect he won't change his approach at all.

If it was only players/GMs doing it I think you'd certainly have fewer off-field issues keeping players out, but I think you'd have even more "good for a long time but never great" players getting in.

For the "Auston Matthews is so much better than Eichel it's not even close woe is us" crowd: Matthews has 1 goal in his last 13 games, 9 points in those 13 (which paces for 57 over 82), and 0 points in 3 straight. Oh, and Toronto is a whopping 6-7 over that span. The moral isn't that Matthews is overrated or that he can't help his team win, it's that streakiness happens.

The Rams definitely have a shot. I just have zero confidence in Goff against Belichick.
