Sabres sign Ryan McLeod to a 4 year extension
tom webster replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
It’s amazing to me that people who speak ad nauseum about the grit and toughness of the Panthers don’t understand that they really only have four or five true top line forwards. Really good ones, but not many. -
I really believe it’s three things; A) A lot of teams are looking for goalies B) goaltending is so unpredictable C) the Carolina theory; unless you can get yourselves on if the top 5 guys, the rest are all nearly the same. That is why losing Ullmark was unforgivable in my book. Finally, for the record, I think they were in on Demko before Vancouver decided to re-up.

The offseason so far - Are the Sabres better?
tom webster replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
Power Plays are almost as unpredictable as goaltending and I’ve always felt coaching in hockey is a little overrated. They really need a playmaking forward more than better coaching but I think they can improve with what they got. -

I believe they are better because; 1) they will be better defensively 2) UPL will have a shorter leash, and 3) They have plenty of offense, especially if they figure the power play out. They were one of the better 5 on 5 teams, albeit with a high shooting percentage. I think Quinn, Benson, Doan, Kulich, McLeod and Danforth will outscore last years numbers of JJP, Quinn, Benson, Kulich, McLeod and Lafferty All that said, I still want Bryan signed and another top 6 forward (Rust?) brought in. -
Connor Timmins filed for arbitration; Bo Byram did not

You know they are not the same. First, they will settle with Timmins and be happy. I don’t necessarily agree with the decision to not qualify JBD but I understand the logic especially when they were able to sign a guy to a two way contract that is actually the real JBD comparable. -

As Dudacek correctly pointed out, these are not the same. He did not want his 7/8 defenseman getting a crazy award due to some good analytics. He has no issue with his 4/5 going the same route because he’s willing to pay that even though it will likely be settled before the hearing. -

And it has nothing to do with JBD. -
Chad D: expect a Byram trade at or around the draft
tom webster replied to dudacek's topic in The Aud Club
I think they are perfectly comfortable matching any offer sheet at an AAV less than Miller’s $8.5M. In fact, an offer sheet with a term of four or more and I think they consider that a win. -
Those are two valid reasons but neither seems likely.
-
Why would Byram sign any kind of a bridge deal when he can sign an offer sheet worth over $7M?

Sabres sign Justin Danforth 2 years 1.8 million AAV

That’s probably why years 2 & 3 are one way, to try and dissuade a claim. -
Jonathan Drouin Michael Pezzeta Jake Allen My

On the one hand, I agree with a lot of what is being said. On the other hand, we are talking about the sixth or seventh defenseman on a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in fourteen years. I’m pretty sure whether the streak continues will have little to nothing to do with this decision.

I’ve thought about Kane and Drouin for the play making forward. -
That’s more than a tad. Barry Trotz might challenge KA for his crown for leagues worst GM
-
I don’t disagree but I think he signs for a lot more and for at least two years, probably three
-
You might be right but he can’t talk about other teams players and general managers don’t discus trades that don’t materialize in specifics.
-
You don’t know if they could have gotten Gibson. A) he had to waive his NMC B) Mrazek appealed to Anaheim because he’s the same nationality as their starter and has less term than UPL Allen is still a possibility but he has to want to come here.

He says he likes what we have because he has no choice but to say it publicly. He knows they effed up letting Ullmark go over an extra year but he can’t say that publicly. They know they need better but whether they have the wherewithal to do anything about it, or even if there is an upgrade available, is debatable.

What Would It Take to Get Saros and Stamkos Out of Nashville?
tom webster replied to St. Pete Gogolak's topic in The Aud Club
You actually presume wrong as Nashville has made it clear they are not rebuilding and believe they can retool and compete similar to Washington last year.
