We probably scout plenty around here. But let's face the facts: There simply aren't as many kids here playing hockey at a high enough level as there are across large swaths of Canada and even the US. I know we love to call ourselves a hockey town, but we're not nearly as hockey crazy as most of Canada and a lot of the more northern and coastal US states. We're just not spitting out the highest quality talent at a high volume to expect a constant stream of WNY kids into the NHL. It's why the ones from here who are special tend to get noticed. They stick out like sore thumbs. You can't be NHL bound around here without everyone knowing about you by the time you're in high school.

Additionally, if you're doing things like watching video, it's probably better not to over-analyze bad plays, but spend more time focusing on good plays. If you know what a good play looks like, then you should be able to identify and correct a bad one without even looking at the tape.

For as long as he's been in the league the T has been pronounced. Hardly the NBC guy's fault.

Training dogs is kinda the same way right? You can't just yell at them or hit them to make them behave. You have to show them the difference in how their behaviors are responded to. Want your dog not to bark? Teach them a command that encourages them to bark and reward it. Then teach them the command for not barking and reward that. I think though, that for humans, the processing of guilt is probably a little more complex, which is why negative responses can in fact make a difference. Getting fired from a job for being a bum should definitely teach you a lesson if an employer has already been quite patient and positive with you.

You mean the coach shouldn't come out before every game and talk about how good the other team is, and then come out after every game and talk about how good the other team was?

I think this can be true sometimes. Good players don't react as aggressively away from the puck because they're reading the play more, but I think Jack has looked disengaged with the puck at times, which isn't quite the same thing. I appreciate that Jack is able to joke about his shooting. I really do think he needs to shoot more and I suspect the coaches have told him as much, if only to add some un-predictability to his game when he has the puck. If I were an opponent I would be operating under the assumption that Jack is pass-first. If he can dispel that notion simply by shooting once or twice more per game, I think that'll open up some space for his passing game.

I think the tank did cause trauma. To what extent, who knows. But I think it did.

Okposo had similar comments in the pre-game, basically "we need to trust our talent". I think these guys were f*ckin shook under Bylsma's "we can't win, so try not to lose" system.

Man, I do not buy it.

So can we send Tennyson to the slag heap?

I'll take it. The Caps weren't impressive tonight.

That's the second Eichel PP shot from that left circle that has gone high and hard and out of the zone. Killing me Jack.

Falk giving Ovi just a little too much space, but I can't blame him. I'd be shitting my pants if I were Justin Falk trying to defend Ovechkin.

He's starting to worry me. I'm generally pretty lenient, but...
