  1. When I was in college, I didn't watch all that much TV. I haven't had cable for a year now, and watch very little broadcast TV, so it's a similar situation. You'd be surprised how much stuff you just lose track of once you turn off the feed. People are talking about movies and stars and whatnot and I have no idea what they're talking about. I decided I needed to follow CNN on twitter just to have some clue about current events. I don't blame those kids at all. Most people (not just college kids) aren't going to spend hours of their free time reading up on current events (especially politics), they have other things to do (like living life). You're going to have to spell this one out, I have no idea who any of those people are. Agreed. While Lybia is important, it's not the only factor in the calculus. It's being hammered because it's the seen as having the best chance to siphon off enough votes. It's all conflicting reports now.
  2. That's fantastic. Great stuff! No home damage from the storm, woot.
  3. There's no Buffalo Vs. Phoenix GDT, so the only two active threads today are Politics and Weather.
  4. It says absolutely nothing about the regulations. For example, if there's a hole in my roof, I'm going to put a tarp over it before it rains because that's the fastest way to get it done even if it won't pass code. It's certainly not a solution I'm going to use in a non-emergency. As for the contractors, everyone with a pickup truck and a hammer will be a "Contractor" since there's a lot of money to be made. Sure, you'd like to think people would be honest and not rip people off with shoddy builds or just running with the money, but you know there are going to be people that do. Permits help sort those people out (somewhat).
  5. Yeah, the trucks are really the only ones that do that. I picked it up when I lived in Binghamton and used to drive to Buffalo a lot. On the bike, I give a 1-second high beam, since I can't turn the headlight off. I don't use it that much, since I'm generally the one doing the passing.
  6. This is the code as I know it: Flashing High Beams: Danger/cop ahead of you. Lights off and on to oncoming car: Your lights aren't on. Lights off and on when a large vehicle is passing you: You're clear to move back to the right. Blink of the flashers/lights off and on after a pass: thanks (in the dark)
  7. Looks like the Weather Modification Network was well worth the money.
  8. http://themoscownews.com/local/20101207/188261951.html Ooops, you're kinda right. Not quite $20-25k, but I midread the original article I used.
  9. While I have one of those too, I personally think this is the best flashlight you can buy for this kind of situation: http://www.amazon.com/American-CLIPRAY-ARCCR100R_SNG-Charger-Flashlight/dp/B003BYROUQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1351696252&sr=8-2&keywords=red+cross+crank+usb+flashlight Note that the USB charger isn't very powerful. Probably best to use the charger to charge a USB battery pack (it'll take a long time) and then charge the phone from that.
  10. No issues here. Power stayed on all night, basement is dry (it always is, the sump pump is decorative for my lot), and nothing came off the house. There's even a fuzzy bright spot in the sky to the South.
  11. You're more than OK then. :) Everything is cool here, storm passed to the south of me for the most part. Hopefully wjag is good, he was in the path earlier.
  12. That's cool. I'm not surprised though, parts of Newark are right at sea-level so the subways are below. The Path train in Jersey City has to be 100 ft below the Hudson. Yeah, it seems like the storm has mostly broken up without dumping a ton of rain here in SE PA, so it'll probably be dumping a lot of that water further North and West.
  13. The average salary in Moscow is something like $1500/yr. I'm not sure you can really compare ticket prices in that environment.
  14. Hang tight. I feel slightly bad now about doing a happy dance that the storm moved south since the Sunday 11AM prediction that had it going over my house.
  15. The storm has moved a bit further South than expected as today has gone on, I don't think Philly is getting it too bad. Mid-day Sunday, the track was over Philly, straight out thru Harrisburg. It's 30-40 moiles south of that now. So trees and whatnot are going down, but the news hasn't been showing major flooding in the city yet.
  16. How do you really feel, Chris? http://www.nbcphilad...lters/176329871
  17. I'm sure you guys aren't getting it up there, but Chris Christie, NJ governor is awesome. I know nothing about his politics, but all day when he's had a press conference he's been ornery. A little while ago he basically called the governor of Atlantic City a tool. Paraphrasing: "For some reason, Mayor Lankford decided to tell people to stay in shelters in the city, after I ordered them out. One of those shelters is a block from the bay. We cannot rescue anyone until 7AM."
  18. I'm planning an audience with the Storm King later. Hopefully my appeals will meet with Victory. The second is the new Victory Midlands Stout. It's fan-freaking-tastic. It's "mid-way" between Storm King (Imperial) and Donneybrook (very Guinness-like). It's mid-strength at 5.2% , with a ton of roasted malt and some chocolate and almost a coffee taste.
  19. Ha ha. At least that's better than last night, the line was really close to my house:
  20. Same here. Sure there's ###### out there, but it's far from the norm (in my rather small sample set). Just like there are people who'd celebrate certain murders and whatnot.
  21. I think if a well-known Democrat came out for Romney, they'd be talking about it. Some random or even famous conservative comes out for Romney? Not news.
  22. Rule of thumb: Negative: Winter Cold 0 - 10: Cold 10-20: Chilly 20-30: Nice 30-40: Hot 40+: Desert hot
  23. Well there's a shocker, Republican that doesn't march in lock-step is labeled irrelevant. I wonder how people who don't label themselves "the right" feel about him, cause that's what's important.
  24. I just don't understand Texas. As a whole, they seem to have this weird superiority complex where their ###### don't stink. It's similar to a lot of people I know from NYC. Snobs, I guess I'd call it. Anyways, I'm going to Houston in a few weeks, I guess I'll have to check it out on my own and figure out if it's something that is really pervasive or just what you see from afar. FWIW, I believe this country should be a paragon of honesty and fair play. And we should put it on display to anyone that wants to come see it, anything else and we look like a banana republic. Ask yourself this: if Iraq (for example) refused to allow inernation observers, would you be fine with it?
