I want to know why GMKA decided to get Ellis in the first place.

They are doing what we say we want them to do: elevate the goaltending on the Sabres. Ellis was a low-risk/high reward move. And if that upsets Levi, TFB. Levi's job right now is winning in Rochester and showing he is ready to move up. Nothing is carved in stone with our goalies next year. No one is blocking Levi. There will just be more competition going forward.

I guarantee if another team claimed Ellis we'd be howling that Adams missed a golden opportunity.

Lyon and UPL are both under contract for next year.

You mean what he did in Levi's first year?

I was just asking how we. "devalued" Levi. By adding Ellis? Signing Lyon?

Players get traded.

And we know this how? Aren't we just assuming things?

Everyone is aware he was annointed the heir apparent to UPL or ‘ the goalie of the future ‘ We’ve talked about it here for the last couple of years. He likely thought the backup spot was his this season. Until it wasn’t.

You made my point.

We do know he gave UPL, Muel, Power and others big deals way too early. So now Adams needs to Justify it for the next 5-7 years. Winning be damned.

I would not call UPL a 'big deal'.

He didn't even get #1 goalie money. Essentially he got high end backup money.

It's why i don't understand why people think that contract is "untradable".

By making promises to the kid that are impossible to keep.

There is no way the promise was "You play like dog crap, put up bad numbers for early 1980's goalies, play worse every opportunity you are given and don't worry, you will still have a spot here, accountability be damned!"

I’m no Adams defender but goaltending is witchcraft.  Some kids burst into the league at 20 years old and become all starts. Some guys take until they are 25-28 years old to become a steady NHL goaltender.  Adam’s  (maybe at Pegula’s behest) thrust Levi immediately into NHL duty.  What looked like a promising start to his career (7 games at the end of the 22-23 season) turned into a small sample size projection. They handed him the keys the following season based on those 7 games and it went south quickly.  They tried it again last season and it went worse.  Should we blame poor supporting cast? Probably.  They’ve addressed it somewhat.  I don’t think his development has been bad, it’s just not on the schedule everyone here wanted.  The problem has been having UPL in the fold.  He’s not good.

I think the change in development path is thanks to having real life hockey adults in the room.

The problem with a 23 year old Levi is that he sees the change in path as a demotion rather than a reset. And frankly that's understandable for a 23 year old. But honestly, were just bringing him along the way he should have been all along.

The problem isn't today's situation. The problem was the situation he walked into. It's hard for a 23 year old to see that spending more time in the AHL is better for them then playing meaningful games in during a playoff push. But it really is a better spot for him.

Whether he becomes an NHL starter is a different conversation. But you can't convince me that Adams sticks to this path for Levi without Ruff/Jarmo in the room.

I just listened to the ATW pod that talks about Levi. First thing Peters says is "I don't care if is accurate."  Okay. People who throw Molotov cocktails usually aren't worried about accuracy either. As long as something catches fire.

One of Levi's first interviews was that he loves competition in net for the goalie position, Peters is just full of BS.

Peter’s is a literal idiot and he has great animosity toward the Sabres because they canned his show.  There is no reason to take anything he says about the Sabres seriously.

He has an audience. Enough of one where he can sell ads. Seneca Casino is a big one, which is ironic since they are one of the Sabres big sponsors too. He's also pretty abusive toward Craig Rivet. I don't get why he puts up with it.

Here is the quote from the Athletic. (sorry, paywall.) This story came out before Ellis being claimed. Was that the straw?

Levi doesn’t mind the added competition. In fact, competition, he says, is his favorite part of his position.

“I want the challenge,” Levi said. “This is all you can ask for. It’s great to be able to find a way through adversity. It makes me excited. I’m excited to come to the rink and prove to myself and to everyone what I’m capable of.”

Judging by the length of this thread I think he hit something.

I listen to the pod only because of Rivet. I think I mentioned before Rivet plays the buffoon but is actually personable and has real passion for hockey and the team. Peters thinks he's the smartest guy in the room, and that's the real joke. Lost all respect for him after this...

Peters coaching 15 and under, what can go wrong?   That is a tough age to handle, and Peters is a child himself.

I am shocked that Peters ever got that job.  I would be concerned about both his hockey chops and his leadership influence on that age group.  Then I saw who was running the club.
