Sabres Trade JJ Peterka to Utah for Defenseman Michael Kesselring and Forward Josh Doan

It was never going to be the case that the Sabres were going to trade Peterka and get the better player in the deal. Teams interested in Peterka were going to be teams trying to get better who were offering pieces that, to them, were expendable and redundant. I'm not saying Kesserling and Doan are bad players, but they aren't what we need to take the step towards being a playoff team this year.  Kesserling, who I assume is seen as the long sought after partner for Owen Power, is 25 years old and has played 156 NHL regular season games and no playoff games.  Bernard-Docker is the only d-man on our current NHL roster, who has played fewer NHL games.

I expect a similar trade with Byram in the next 48 hours. And when that is done, the Sabres will, in the blink of an eye, have gone from being a team that looked like it might be up against the cap after signing their RFAs, to being a team that can easily come in around $88 million, give or take a million.

My son ranted and raved about how bad this was.  I sat there and just couldn't muster the energy to care.

At this point they could do anything and I just don't think I can bring myself to care.

Either they are going to win or they are not.. and until they do I'm going to not give one iota of a concern about anything they do.

The worst part of this deal is I actually do like the players we got back but still feel shafted. This plus a late 1st or a couple 2nds and I feel much less livid.

Swap firsts, okay. But there's no backbone or creativity.

Here's a sad and crazy thought. What if saving money was actually number two or three on the priority list.

When people talk about Adams pinching pennies for Pegula, if almost legitimizes Adams. As if he would be better at his job if not for Terry.

The toughest part to swallow is that I think that Adams is really trying and believes in everything he does.

No it doesn’t because Adams is the one selling the plan to Pegula. Adams is in favour of this plan because “low” cost aligns perfectly with “no expectation”. Sell the future. Adams is the architect. He’s the one who said he could do what Botterill couldn’t for less

All those seasons getting excited watching JJ develop thinking h was a future piece to get us back to relevancy... and boom.. once again they rip our hearts out just like Sam, Jack, and others. It is pointless to even get excited about the prospects anymore now knowing they will want out.

Conflict of interest with the fans

The penny-pinching isn't just confined to the roster. It's pretty obvious they won't even pay for an AI subscription to help with their content.

This is rock bottom for me.

Just an absolute gut punch.

They hit on JJ in the draft, spent years developing him, then he's gone.

Who the ***** cares if he wants to be here, he's an RFA and was supposed to be a core guy moving forward.

This smells like a salary dump.

This franchise took a step backwards today, sad times for fans.

I saw that earlier.  Cringeworthy, aside from Jerry Forton's Oscar worthy performance

My friend (a Habs fan who watches more hockey than anyone I know) says Doan stood out to him as a Tasmanian Devil on the forecheck.

Some of you are going to have to admit that this trade looks bad because the purpose of it was to deliver a partner for Power. Power is the poster-child of the problems this roster has.

Thank you

I’m sorry but if the above sentiment isn’t your initial reaction, if your first inclination is to hop on and discuss how the “pieces might actually fit” - you’ve respectfully lost the plot.

willfull avoidance of the issue that continually needs to be brought home, and on this day more than ever: they are intentionally destroying the crest

Absolutely nonsense

The trade is bad because the object was to save money

YOU DONT TRADE A STAR FORWARD TO FIND A PARTNER FOR YOUR FIRST OVERALL PICK

I saw that Doan was American I’m assuming there’s a college connection there somewhere

He’s Shane Doan’s kid, played his college hockey and his AHL in Arizona.

Probably the most Arizona hockey player ever.

Can’t believe they didn’t flip firsts at least.  To the players, prepared to see how it works out. I was completely wrong about Mcleod last year. We needed a power partner, we got one. Doan? Don’t know anything about the guy.

For anyone on here that wants to find the upside of Doan and Kesselring... Just remember we shipped Peterka's 68pts out the door to get it... Not to mention his potential.

Dahlin and Thompson are going to want no part of this ***** show by the end of next year.

100%. They should have built around Peterka, not traded him away. We've made every young player ont his team the scapegoat, First Cousins, now Peterka, Byram has been in trade talks since he got here, and everyone hates Quinn now. As of today, this team moved closer to the 1st overall pick in 2026 than they did the playoffs.

Peterka is a good fwd be he is not a star - we need to stop exaggerating 60-70 pt one dimensional player. He has a lot to prove to be a a star - or will be a Jeff skinner 2.0. Would you be mad getting the return we got for Jeff skinner in his youth knowing what he is? If they actually spend the money they have from doing this ( big if) it’s these 2 guys plus another 5 million dollar player

we have a few guys that can turn into another JJ in the pipeline but no one like the 2 guys we just got.

Unless, somehow, despite the EEE and the GM, they win. Then maybe. But that’s a lot to overcome for a group of players outside of a movie script.

Peterka is going to a team that, per MoneyPuck, finished 5th in the NHL at expected goals, 6th in Corsi, and 6th in Fenwick, all 5v5.

Kesserling and Doan are coming to a team that finished 6th last in expected goals, 16th in Corsi, and 15th in Fenwick.

Kesserling and Doan both had excellent Corsi and Fenwick %'s last year, but they played on a team where nearly every player did.  They are coming to a team, where more than 1/2 the roster were below 50% in these metrics. Logic suggests there are factors in these metrics that go well beyond the capabilities of individual players.
