The Tank Responsibility Thread

There were lots of threads around here about the Rotten Core and that they needed to go.  Pominville, Vanek, Roy, Stafford, Ennis, they were all pretty good players but none of them stepped up into the same type of leadership role that Drury/Briere provided, and most fans around here were ready to move on to try something new.  If you recall, the Sabres were a perennial playoff bubble team and seemed to be slowly sliding with each year after they made the conference finals in '06 and '07.

Maybe if we'd have kept some of that talent and then picked up a Ryan O'Reilly type player who wanted to lead and when he got here had plenty of veterans to support him, things would have been different.  But that's all water under the bridge.  I think with being a constant bubble team, without strong leadership, and the whole Rotten Core thing, a total tear-down was inevitable.

To the bolded:  ?

They were playoff missing bad after black Sunday but improved after Myers came into the fold.

They won the division in '10 and were in control of their series w/ the Bruins until Vanek was cheap shotted out of the series & therest of the team shrivelled.

Then, while in 1st place in the division again, Miller got Lucic'd & the rest of the team shrivelled that season away. They snuck into the playoffs & were in poition to move on when Pominville got broken & the team went into an even bigger shell-shocked ball than they had before.

They weren't slowly sliding each year. They were good, but had absolutely no intestinal fortitude & couldn't handle opponents going over the line.

To try to improve the intestinal fortitude, Regier tried to upgrade the toughness & leadership without appreciably sacrificing scoring by trading Roy & Kassian for Ott, McGinn, & Hodgson. Regehr was also brought in. It all didn't work. Could it have worked if Hodgson didn't get injured? Maybe, but it failed.

And after that & attempts at upgrades via FA failed they decided to blow it all up rather than see if new blood in the GM office could get it done.

But the team didn't go through a steady slide from the slug glory days down to the tank.

Yep that's about how I recall it as well.

Pretty sure the end result of this debate will change NADA.

Something, something, narrative, something.

Ok to clarify are we bad now because of the tank or the re-rebuild ? If the answer is because of the tank then I'll say it again. Dahlin is a result of the tank which makes it potentially one of the most successful tanks of all time with Eichel and Dahlin as the prize. If we're bad now because our G.M.T.M. and our G.M.J.B. are crappy at rebuilding then perhaps Dahlin can't be considered spoils of the tank. If the first scenario is the answer we can all stop with the tank was a mistake narratives because we potentially got a very good centre and what could be a generational D-man.
