Kotalik on his way to Calgary?

Could someone please explain to me how Kotalik has a no-trade clause? Who is his agent? Seriously, how was this negotiated in? I have always felt Glen Sather is one of the worst GMs in NHL history, but seriously, who in their right mind would give Kotalik a no-trade clause? Granted, this is not the stumbling block in the trade, but I still do not understand how Ales "big softie" Kotalik has a no trade clause in his contract.

I admit, I like Kotalik, a lot more than most people. I love his slapshot, he's great on shootouts, and frankly, he's a pretty consistent 20 goal scorer, but he brings absolutely nothing else to the table. He does not play defense and does not use his body to fight for the puck along the boards and is apathetic and completely listless on the ice. There's certainly a spot for him in the NHL as a third or fourth line specialist, but nothing more. How does he get a $3 million/year contract with a no-trade clause? I just don't get it.

1) I like Kotalik, too. Was sad to see him depart; his main fault is streakiness, and his main asset is the shootout.

2) How? How? It's the freaking Rangers, that's how.

If I remember correctly, it was a real weak NTC. Basically, he could choose three teams that he would not accept a trade to.

As bad as Jokinen at $5.5 million is, he is a free agent this Summer. Kotalik, however, has two more years of being overpaid. I don't understand the move by Calgary.

I think it shows how desperate Calgary was to get Jokinen off their team.

Horrible trade by the Flames. Great trade by the Rangers. Though Jokinen is not playing all that well, to get out of Kotalik's contract is huge.

100% agreed. When he was with Florida and Coyotes, i wanted him and probably even made several comments on this board to say he was my dream player to pick up. But, since he went to Calgary, i'm turned off. He's lazy, doesn't fight for the puck, is horrible by the boards and bad in the locker room according to the Calgary media. According to Fan 690 out of Calgary i was listening last night, the channel's hockey insider said Flames tried to trade him at the draft with no avail because nobody wanted him unless a worse contract was being send back to Calgary. They said they made several attempts of trading him and nobody would bite except NYR who have their own 2 problem childs. On a forum, people laughed at the addition of 2 lazy players Kotalik and Higgins, and i didn't see one Flames fan who was convinced either of those is more lazy then Jokinen. They said it's impossible to be more worthless then Olli.

It will be interesting to see how Jokinen now plays tonight. According to TSN he's in the lineup for their game vs. Philly. But Flames trying to find a 3rd team to finish the deal off. I guess Kotalik wants to go back to Edmonton....

I think people said this about him in FL

It's like chemo or radiation treatment. Sure, it might not be the healthiest method but it has the best chance of killing that cancer.

I agree 100%.

I know it is a long shot, it is not impossible for Jokinen to put together a real hot streak. A real compliment to go along with Gaborik.

Addition by subtraction. The lockerroom must have been a mess. While getting Higgins and Kotalik isn't very inspiring, the addition of them along with the TO players gives them more scoring depth. They were desperate. I don't think Jokinin will do much with the Rangers and Phaneuf might regain his form after this in Leaf gear.

From the broadcasts and reports I've seen of the Rangers thus far, Higgins was respected and admired by teammates and even Tortorella for his work ethic and competitiveness - he just wasn't scoring or able to finish on his chances like they needed him to. His market value is obviously much lower than it ever was during his days in Montreal but Higgins is only 26 and still a good two-way player. He'd fit in perfectly with Ruff's system IMO - and would be a better option going forward than MacArthur. The fact that Higgins can probably be had for a draft pick and will be earn less as an UFA this summer coming off a poor statistical season are both selling points to add him.

Kotalik's on the fast-track to playing himself out of the NHL IMO. I figure he'll survive another year in Calgary (or whatever other city he gets traded to) before going back to Europe.
