  1. Looks like synthetic ice to me.
  2. Air Pegula left BUF landing in Boca Raton yesterday afternoon. https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N1977H Seems unlikely something is imminent.
  3. Here's the USA Hockey explanation of why they made the rule change... http://www.usahockey.com/news_article/show/804355 The TL;DR is to promote skill development by encouraging players to posses the puck and have to make a play with it rather than just blast it down the ice. “We want to encourage players to get their heads up, think and make skillful, intelligent plays,” said Ken Martel, the technical director of USA Hockey’s American Development Model. “To develop problem-solving skills, we need rules that encourage players to think..." I understand the reasoning, but as a coach, I'm going to tell my kids to ice it anyway. IMO, at the 14U level and below you're trying to build the correct habits for the next level. If you have teach kids to try to posses the puck or make a skill play in your own zone on the PK, that's going to result in more turnovers and pucks in the back of your net. They should be learning to ice the puck in those situations.
  4. For youth hockey you're allowed to make changes after icing, that won't change on the PK. Coaches are still going to tell kids to ice the puck, this is going to slow the game down significantly IMO. I would've rather they did something else, like force the player to serve the entire penalty no matter how many goals are scored.
  5. Not necessarily NHL related, but USA Hockey is changing the rules about playing shorthanded for this upcoming season. The shorthanded team will no longer be allowed to freely ice the puck, it will be called icing and the faceoff will come back into the shorthanded team's zone. This applies to 14U (Bantam) and younger divisions.
  6. Risto quietly logged a +7 TRpm last season, the team was a bit better than average when he was on the ice.... which is obvious, even with his defensive shortcomings, he helped the team in a positive way. That said, the defense as a whole may be better under Housley, maybe not.... at least, maybe not initially until they learn the system. Anyway, beating a dead horse here... how many more days until the season starts?
  7. In their current form, Risto and Scandella are a very nice NHL level 2A 2B pairing. IMO the 1A/B pairing isn't on the roster yet. Maybe they grow into 1A/B caliber under Housley's tutelage, but that's a big maybe.
  8. I'm pretty close to feeling this way too. Who was the last Sabres player to came out of nowhere and contribute significantly to this team? I understand this crop is still relatively young but they should've shown regular flashes by now or at least put up numbers in Rochester.
  9. They have serious depth issues across the board. 5-11 would be my guess. I don't think Tyrod can stay on the field, especially once the OL starts to get dinged up, could spiral into a complete show quickly.
  10. How many wins do I see them winning? All of them.
  11. "Other towns"? Joke's on you, I don't even live there...
  12. The Browns will be decent IMO, should have one of the best OLs in football, Watson might surprise as well. McDermott must still be wiping away his tears.... where is he?
  13. McDermott and his sidekick going live here momentarily... http://www.buffalobills.com/video/videos/
  14. If Watkins and Matthews (and their starting QBs) stay healthy this season, my money would be on Watkins only slightly out-producing Matthews.
  15. that's great, but what about ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZEMGUUUUUUUUUUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!
  16. after the Watkins pick... "We went into this draft saying we were going to be bold, and we made a bold move," Bills CEO Russ Brandon said. "We thought it was a calculated risk and a risk we were willing to take," Whaley said. "The high cost of not making the playoffs is something we weighed in and we thought this guy was going to get us to the playoffs." oops
  17. Consider there are infinite parallel universes (there are)... it at least one of the universes, the Bills never traded up for Watkins and took OBJ instead. I wonder what that universe looks like. Matthews is one of just five receivers to record 65 or more catches and 800 or more receiving yards in each of his first three NFL seasons along with Odell Beckham Jr, Mike Evans, A.J. Green and Randy Moss. What has Watkins done besides miss games and getting caught from behind while showboating? He's not a competitor.
  18. This was a only somewhat tankish of a move. If they they trade Shady tho.... oh boy.
  19. Watkins and Matthews are very similar IMO. Gaines is bigger and much more physical than Darby. And they net picks. Not terrible, considering Watkins was going to walk away after this season anyway. I find it interesting how they executed these two deals simultaneously. Wonder if the Rams and Eagles knew about the other trade.
  20. There's a flaw in this reasoning.... controlled zone entries occur when you have the opportunity to carry the puck in. If you don't have that opportunity, then you dump it in and get after it. Of course, controlled entries result in more shots because you maintain possession... but it's not the smart play if the defense is setup such that you don't have the opportunity for a controlled entry. In these cases, if you attempt to maintain possession (instead of dumping it), a turnover is likely. Turnover's at the blue-line (either one) are big nono's which often result in high quality scoring chances going the other direction. So for this study to say that controlled entries result in many more shots... yeah, of course they do, but the type of entry is dictated by the defense, not the offense.
  21. I love his offensive skill, but he's a liability as reflected in his negative TRpm on a BAD team. Meaning his team was slightly worse with him on the ice than it was with him off the ice. If BUF needed a boost to their power play, then it might make more sense, but they don't.
