  1. Probably the right call, but I'm still not sure I understand how/why such a blatantly racist person would even come to own an NBA team.
  2. I prefer the simple definition of a clutch player: someone who makes a habit of coming up big in big games.
  3. If a quarter of the penalties that Chara committed were actually called, he'd be a liability.
  4. He's talented obviously, and a Sabres fan knocking him is like a guy who has to walk to work making fun of another guy's car. But doesn't it seem that more often than not Sid just kind of disappears and becomes a non-factor in playoff games? Especially over the last couple of seasons?
  5. Interesting topic, Callaway, I'm glad you started a new thread on it. For those saying Kane is not the best player in the world, who's better? Why?
  6. I'll admit I didn't choose my words carefully enough. A columnist writing "The Bills lost four consecutive Super Bowls" is an objective declaration and it is unfair to state columnists do not have some objectivity. And I'm sorry for hitting one of your pet peeves; we can agree to disagree on the larger point that columnists are not, as a whole, objective. I would argue that sports reporting, by its very nature, is not objective. In fact, I'm not sure I see much of a difference between a sports reporter's write up and that of a sports columnist, aside from page position and having the author's picture near the byline. That is, I would if I felt like arguing about such things...
  7. I'm surprised to read that. It was some years ago, but before they made the jump to the 'A' the Norfolk/Hampton Roads Admirals sold out The Scope most nights and the games were very exciting. I think a big part of the draw was all of the fighting that used to take place in the 'E' and it helped create an exciting atmosphere - especially when the Richmond Renegades made the 90 minute trip down - it seemed like Admirals coach John Brophy (formerly coach of the B's) throwing sticks on the ice and getting ejected and multiple line brawls were the norm. For a lot of ECHL players their only chance to make it to the National League were fisticuffs, so there was plenty of goonery. After the Admirals moved to the 'A' the attendance and enthusiasm took a big hit. The locals seemed to watch hockey for the fights like I watch NASCAR for the wrecks. I think most were reluctant to spend the extra $3-5 per ticket and higher concession prices when most of them just couldn't appreciate the difference in the quality of hockey. I don't know if ECHL hockey is a snoozefest just in Elmira or if it's like that everywhere, but I'm hoping for the former because, for all of its faults, it was an entertaining brand of hockey.
  8. A columnist, by definition, is anything but objective. In paragraph 6 of the article he says he's from NYC.
  9. Post-penalty faceoff rules supercede icing - the faceoff comes back to the defensive zone of the team going on the PK
  10. No apologies needed - you probably know more about American history, culture, and government than many Americans do. Plus, you're a Sabres fan.
  11. Any word on what ChileanSeaBass is driving these days?
  12. (former US history teacher alert) The Bill of Rights, which is made up of the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, were written and ratified in 1789. The US was not at war at that time. The next conflict wouldn't begin for another 12 years when Thomas Jefferson refused to pay "tributes" and ransoms to the pirates of the Barbary coast.
  13. Interesting thread topic and poll. Briere is one of the most clutch playoff performers of his generation, I think he has something like 112 points in 111 games - he's the guy I think will have "the best" playoffs. The guy I'm pulling for is Miller. The guy I wish was still on the Sabres is Ott.
  14. I did not know they even had a team, and yeah, I guess that would keep them from going with Eagles... The alliteration in the nickname appeals to me but outside of cheesy sounding names better suited for cheerleading teams (Elmira Express or Elmira Explosion), I can't come up with anything. EDIT: Use the 'M' in Elmira and name them the Elmira Monarchs with sweaters modeled on the Sabres originals. The logo would be shield-shaped to pay homage to the Amerks and represent a coat of arms and have a crown in the middle with "Elmira" on it. I don't know if it would be popular, but it's fun thinking about. Now all I need to do is hit the lottery and make it reality. .
  15. One of those neat-to-look-at-but-doesn't-really-mean-anything things http://msn.foxsports...egiances-041714
  16. This could get interesting: McDonagh's coming back from his busted up shoulder and the Flyers have evidently placed a bullseye on him. http://www.csnphilly.com/hockey-philadelphia-flyers/flyers-determined-hit-hampered-mcdonagh
  17. Agreed on both counts. Bos-Det will be an interesting series. I liked the reseeding after Round 1, but it is kind of neat for this non college basketball guy to get to mess with a playoff bracket for once. It makes for a lot of what ifs and I have grown to like the idea!
  18. Crap. Just went to print my bracket and realized I have a typo on my total goals. I'm at 22 but meant 32. I guess I'm rooting for a low scoring series now!
  19. I read he was 23, so he's young, but not that young. I was really impressed with what I saw out of him. He got knocked a bit in LA for developing too slowly, but the forward position seems to agree with him. TN seems to like him - and being singled out by GMTM in the season ending presser doesn't hurt - so I think he'll play a much bigger role next season. And I'm looking forward to it.
  20. Going by the standards set by other ECHL teams, I'm thankful they're not the Elmira Ice Eels. If it was my team, I'd model my sweaters after the Amerks' and name them the Elmira Eagles.
  21. I did some googling and came across the '07 Media Guide. It says McKenney was hired in July '95, so the timeline matches up. It also said he was Hartford's S&C coach for 6 years prior, so it's likely he came over from the Whalers with Teddy who was an assistant coach there for a year before Bflo hired him. Good memory Taro!
  22. She's been in the news here because Norfolk is her home port and she was buzzed by an unarmed Russian Fencer while underway in the Black Sea. http://www.voanews.com/content/us-condemns-russian-flyover-near-ship-in-black-sea/1893062.html
