A few months before the undisputed Worst Trade In Hockey History (a trade so bad it literally was a significant contributing factor in killing a team) the Whalers made the decision to strip Ron Francis of the captaincy (as if he was the problem and not Ed Johnston being an incompetent moron and Rick Ley being an awful coach) and the next night the Whalers got crushed in a game where they put up a grand total of 8 shots. Yeah, stripping Dahlin of the C would be a catastrophically stupid idea.

You would almost think the organization itself had literally built the team with the defacto goal of losing as many games as possible or something... Also worth mentioning that the biggest loser in the NHL changing the lottery rules to do everything short of rigging it so the Sabres wouldn't get McDavid was in fact Arizona (who would've got Eichel and instead ended up with an all time bust in Strome). I don't think people realize that unless you are at best in the world tier goaltending performance is almost entirely dependent on team defense and besides Dahlin we are absolutely shambling (and as Igor Shetserken shows even being at that tier isn't enough if everything else is a clown show).

Was there. We looked awful and had we been playing any other team besides Bridgeport we would've lost easy. Team looked like they were gassed from the night before and were really sloppy all over the ice but Bridgeport is beyond horrible and has only won once at home in 15 games this season.

Was always a Whalers fan. Adopted the Sabres after they were murdered because they were the only Adams Division team I didn't hate (Hated the Habs and HATED the ***** Teddy Bear Scum). My wildest dream would be dragging Karmanos to the steps of the Civic Center and choking him until the ***** came pouring out of his nostrils while the entire city of Hartford wildly celebrated (and Governor Convicted Felon would be next).

The Whalers had as depressing an existence as it gets but until that fat pig Karmanos officially pulled the plug they were never as depressing and hopeless as this stinking pathetic shower of ***** franchise. The Whalers death causes me pain to this very day, there is not a day that goes by where I don't think about how much I loved them and how I would give anything to have them back. If the Sabres went away I wouldn't have that feeling of sadness, it would be the feeling of relief of seeing a loved one dying of some horrible disease finally being out of their misery and their suffering over.

That sounds like a pretty damning scouting report but how would a guy who doesn't stand out at any level end up a lottery pick? That doesn't make any sense.

The ending of this game does deserve to be remarked upon: it's well established that a team defending an empty net will be allowed to do almost anything and the refs will swallow their whistles. In all my years of watching hockey I can't recall ever seeing a team ATTACKING an empty net allowed to do whatever the hell they wanted with the ref swallowing the whistle until last night. That was insane.

There is no hope until Pegula is gone. None. In a few years the "But The Bills Mafia" are going to find that out the hard way when he screws them up royally.
