By retaining 0.6 mil/season.  Leafs are cap hamstrung.  Retaining the differences in the contracts may be enough.  I know Botterill is allergic to cap retention, but Kapanen would be a great get.  Leafs are desperate for defenders.

Why are they hamstrung?   They have $5.8M in Deadline cap space.  Morgan Reilly is out for months (at least two) and even if Muzzin comes back in February, they seemingly have plenty of space to make a move.

I align with @nfreeman - considerable sweetener.    Why would they trade a young asset with excellent possession metrics and has a much higher ceiling for a  guy who has been healthy scratched 15 times this year?  And do it within division.   No chance.

There's more to being a solid hockey player than putting up passenger points on line with a top 3 center in the universe.

Is 68 points good? Yeah it is.  You know what's better? 80, 90, 100 points.  Don't settle.

If you wanted 100 then you should have drafted Leon when you had a chance.  Realistically, what UFA is out there that can score like Sam and wants to play in Buffalo?  Or what combination of players would have to put together to trade for a player with term that has this potential?   I see both sides of the argument but at the end of day there is a player in his prime, you have cap space next year to afford it, and he is one of very few 60-80 point players probably willing to sign a long term deal with Buffalo. You probably just do it.   I also acknowledge @nfreeman’s point about how this core hasn’t proven they can win;  but I see JB too risk averse to make a blockbuster trade that involves Sam plus parts.

Not with D pairings, which is even more important. The Buffalo News thing posted mentions this as well. Lack of communication and playing with a regular partner. We actually don't have all that many injuries (compared to most teams). It just seems like a lot because we have such lousy depth.

He had to manage 10 D-men for 6 spots for most of the year.   Injuries to Dahlin, Bogo, Scandella and Jake.    He's also been told (my assumption, no insight) to showcase certain players for trades.  And also has to keep ego's in check.    So he's kind of got some excuses.

VO was a Murray selection in 2014. I refuse to give JNot credit for Dahlin. Montour and Pilut should be downgraded to average. Miller and MoJo should be downgraded to disappointing. So after 2.5 seasons, the only things JNot has done definitively well (in my opinion) are the Skinner and Jokiharju trades. Awesome.

Montour has been average hasn’t he.  Appropriate downgrade.  I think we need to debate that RFA contract over Reinharts.  I’m not sure he is a must keep with Joki playing so well.  And Miller is confusing. When is the last time a GM trades for a player over the summer and he gets healthy scratched so frequently?  I get he was Downgraded on the depth chart by Joki, but.....Questionable trade at this point.

Are we enjoying Sobotka 2?  So glad we dumped Scandella to the Canadians to get him.

He might be Vlad-lite.  So far his line has poor analytics (Cf/Ff/HD) and his Faceoffs aren’t as good as Vlad.   In his defense a high number  of def zone starts, and Vlad was buoyed by Jeff Skinner.   He has nowhere to go but up.

This won't be popular with some but after watching that if I'm JBot I'm upping my FA offer to Kassian this summer.

Burke is in love with Tchachuk so he can never do any wrong for him. First hit was to the head. Second one was cleaner, but he obviously remembered the first one. Tchachuk is the biggest rat in the league. This is what you get in the new nhl that allows him to be what he is. It's hockey, both parts of it but penalizing Kassian more than Tchachuk is wrong.

Maybe, just maybe the first hit was charging, intentional and a piece of the head.  And maybe Tchachuk had an obligation to answer the bell.  But the second was so clean and there is no reason he should have to drop gloves.  And the Sabres should NOT be in on Kassian, but rather scouting to find the next Matt T.

IMO he's waiting for the deadline to try and maximize return.... also probably hasn't decided yet if they're going to be buyers or sellers.   At this point they *should* be sellers, but we don't know what JBOT's view is.    They have some winnable games coming up, if they shockingly go on a tear, they're right there.   Look what St. Louis did last season after Jan 1.   Unlikely they repeat something similar missing their top two wingers and a tier 1 goalie, but they go on an 8-1-1 stretch and suddenly they're within striking distance.

The guy did worse in the Taylor Hall deal than Botterill did in the O'Reilly deal, too.

I'll bite.....how is that possible?  He received  solid prospects, and a first and a third that could become a first if they re-sign Hall...........and no cap dump in return.   All this for a player that is a UFA with no intention of signing there in July.

That said, not a fan.   Highly questionable picks in 2015 and 2016.   Bogus argument to say their first overalls did not have a franchise type player.

But he won that trade, and also won the one acquiring Hall in the first place.

They weren’t head hits, but I thought both those hits were clearly charges.  4+ heavy strides into him.  And with pretty obvious intent to injure.  Kassian was more or less in a position where he wasn’t going to be able to brace for those hits.

Those were live by sword, die by the sword hits.

The first was three strides, which is charging, but no penalty called on the ice.  The second was two strides.  Burke called them clean hits in between periods.   I'll defer to him.

And color me dinosaur, but I loved both hits. Thought they were clean.

+1 on this take.  Clean hits, and he shouldn’t have to answer with a fight to defend.   Kassian will get a heavyweight match up on 1/29.  And I will be watching.

I mean the dalton comment was good old joking.

As to the rest, honestly take a breath. I mean that in a good way. Dahlin is good, it's just hard to see it right now with how bad we are. I have to take a deep breath sometimes when I see this team because they do lack heart. Its *****.

Now botterill is 1 of 2 ppl. 1 he's a dipshit who is not bad but also not good enough to move this team forward. Or 2, a subtle master with bigger plans just cautiously waiting. At this point I doubt 2 but he's definitely calculating and the Jokiharju trade was part of that. I flip flop on botterill. Frolic was meh but I don't think Scandella had much of a market, just like bogo. Idk I guess we'll know by july 2.

The Dalton comment WAS funny.   And I'm not a hater.   Of Dahlin, or any Sabre.  I want the rest of SabreSapce to know that while our team has struggled the last year and a half since the last time Vancouver was in town the narrative has changed; and while I acknowledge Dahlin will be great,  I am concerned about development whether its Risto, Mitts or Dahlin.  I agree with your assesment of JB.  But his swing and miss rate (even if smaller trades) is concerning me.

It means Hughes turned 20 before his current NHL year, versus Dahlin who won't be there until next season. 6 months is huge for a 19 year old.

Makar, Girard, and Heiskanen are all older, are they not? Just checked at yupppp.

Also Dahlin leads his team in points. What do you want? Him to carry the defense on his back?

Actually he's 4th, and tied for 8th in 5v5 points.  But you know who was first on his team in total points, his rookie season (when he was 20 years old when it finished)?  Dennis Potvin.

It's almost as if fans of of the Sabres have no perspective at all anymore.

I bet they think nylander is better than Jokiharju tooo

No man, he's trash. Elias Petterson is better. And is forward. And is older. And plays on a better team. And I like puppies.

I was going to laugh at your Daltom comment, funny, but some of your comments like these are duchy.  Be better.    And be careful, if you continue your opinion that Joki is so much better than Nylander it implies JB actually won a trade,  and the masses won't like that.

Quinn Hughes is not the same age or in the same age year.  He is 20 and in his age 20 season.

What does this mean?  They are 6 months apart and both drafted in 2018.  Hughes would not have been eligible to be drafted in 2017 when he was 17.   And he has one less year experience.    Rather than splitting hairs over draft year and calendar birthday, tell me why I should not have concerns that young defensemen like Makar, Girard, Hughes and Heiskenan are not developing faster.   Fair to say you would not expect better 5v5 from Risto in November of 2018 when that interview was given?

  15. 1 minute ago, Thorny said:

You want something to manifest in a time period drastically shorter than the one in which the original player manifested.

Potvin had 21 goals and 76 points his second year.  And 31/98 points his third.

If I asked you at the beginning of the year which Rasmus would have more 5v5 points, more goals, more 5v5 goals, better +/- which one would you have said?  Are you satisfied with the growth you have seen in year two?

He is a 19 year old defenseman.  How many 19 year old defenseman are even in the NHL?  How many are the highest scoring D on their team?

Is there even any D in the NHL who was better at 19 than Dahlin is now?

Quinn Hughes, who we just saw today is the same age has more points in total, and points per game.   He is also leading leading Defenders in scoring on the Canucks.

@Thorny and @Curt  For the record, I am not down on Ramus.  Just making an observation about the narrative change from November 2018 to January 2020.   Specific to two Swedish rookies.   Petersson was viewed as secondary to Dahlin and while one year older,  (but the same NHL experience) Petersson has blossomed into a superstar, ranking 14th overall in scoring.   Not just  21 year olds.   Yes, a different position , and it takes more time to mature notwithstanding.  The narrative was that Rasmus was the next Dennis Potvin.  This has not manifested.   Whereas Petersson drafted lower and with lowered expectations has flourished.   Just an observation.

  17. I recall an interview last year in November when the Sabres hosted the Canucks where Petersson answered four questions about Dahlin.  He got so pissed  he asked if the interview was about Rasmus or him.  He went on to win the Calder, and doesn’t seem to be looking back.  It seems like forever ago when that hype for Dahlin pervaded the press and our conversations.   Fading with each game.

Caught a Torterella interview on the radio the other day.  Very impressed.  Hard nosed guy, but choked up when talking about how Blue Jackets fans had donated a ton of money to the Torterella Family Foundation to help get dogs adopted in the area.  Effort was in response to him getting fined by the NHL.

Blue Jackets were 11 points out of the playoffs on December 7, and have gone 10-1-4 since to tie for the 8th seed.  All this while having the most injuries in the NHL.  They've done it with AHL guys and lunch pail type attitude.  Wish the Sabres had more of that attitude as a team.

Gerbe's name came up in relation to guys coming back from injury and decisions to be made on who to send back down when the time comes.  Torts:  "Gerbe's not going anywhere. I love that guy."  Apparently had brought a lot of energy and hard work to the room.

Team loses Panarin, Duchene, Dzingel and Bob in free agency, then Murray, Atkinson, Bjorkstrand, and Anderson to injury and perform to the level you stated, and competing for the playoffs.  Impressive.
