I'm excited that the franchise has finally decided to play its second best LHD.

Bold statement.   I agree that he is better than Jake.  But you are jumping Montour as well?   If that’s the case, what are your thoughts of his upcoming RFA status.  I’m disappointed is his performance based on high expectations coming in here and the cost (both Salary and trade value).

and this is why I didn't want to sign Matt Duchene.

Not saying he's the only reason they are underachieving, but everywhere he goes the team gets worse, and every team he leaves does better than expected.

So is there anyone on our roster who does that? I dunno, but it wasn't ROR.

Not sure who but I’m willing to let all but three or four players go to test this thesis.

That's a very fan-centric view.  I don't think we really know if JBot recognizes the trade was a mistake or if he even feels responsible for it (if it was driven from higher up).

I'm not saying I want him back but it wouldn't totally surprise me.

God I hope that hindsight has provided him perspective about the trade.   Not fan-centric, human-nature centric.  No one wants be reminded of failures.  Other factors include does Vlad even want to come back, and other than face-offs he brings so very little to the table in terms of skill, size and speed.

So RFK seems to like Sobotka.  Any chance the Sabres give him a (smaller) contract to return next year?

Zero point zero.  A player like Vlad maybe, but not him.  He is tainted with being part of a trade that Would only serve to remind JB of everyday.   He gone.

That was a nice surprise. Thought we were gonna blow it at the end but hung on for a win. Good efforts form several players. I thought it was one of Johanson's best games and I think they should stick with the Risto in front of the net on the PP idea. Reinhart's better passing it around than being the in front guy imo. Good game from Sheary too.

Just keep showing the effort and we might have something to build on.

This.   Was it not tried successfully in early Nov, then abandoned?   It’s no surprise their PP% is so low.  They try the same thing over and over.   Sam has a descent shot (as evidenced today).  The absence of Victor coupled with an overall lack of success demands change.

3 points in 24 games for ERod, 4 points (including the critical first goal Thursday) in 12 games for Lazar.  Also ERod is a -5 to Lazar's +4.  Not to mention that Krueger sees Lazar as a go-to guy for faceoffs.

    But okay.... no better.  Sure.

While I agree with your argument I must remind you that any mention of +/- in defense of a point is invalid on this forum.  Back to your regular scheduled programming.

How is being 17th in 5X5 not their biggest problem, especially when you consider the inordinate percentage of that is Eichel? Guess what? If they were top ten they probably would be in a solid playoff position and wouldn’t have to call up a mercenary to hide the fact their GM is so spineless he can’t make a deal!

Didn't say scoring was not a problem.  Said it's not their biggest problem.  Being in the bottom third in Goals Against, DFL in PP goals defended, and Carter Hutton are far bigger problems.  Second line scoring has improved, and will continue to improve.   Bottom 6 scoring is down, which is why we are here.....talking for 5 pages about a singular substitution.  If the sabres start both invisible men (Erod and Vesey), what is your upside for this game?  Do you honestly think either will score?  Possible, but unlikely based on history.

You have had 5 posts since you promised not to return.   Do yourself a favor.  Hide in your fear bunker for a few days.  Enjoy the New Year festivities and come out when either your proven right, and Dalton is sent down after two games at a minus 5.  Then gloat.  Or, if the Sabres can string together a few W's and certain players actually elevate their game, not at the expense of goals scored, come back with your proverbial tail between your legs with a mea culpa.   Either way, Happy New Year.

Last post today. You want to believe that some 4th line JAG, an actual jag btw, is going to make this team somehow better then I'm sorry. This team will continue to be trash as long as the management group believes that 1 gritty 4th liner is the key to a team that can't score, sucks on the pk, and regularly is simply not talented enough. We need at least 2 top 6 forwards including a 2c and #1 rw.  Adding Smith is like putting lipstick on a pig and saying you're dating a Victoria's secret model. I'm absolutely stunned the general feeling is that this move is anything other than window dressing.

And Maybe, just maybe your completely wrong about this and one player, who is just another guy, that goes out hits everything, sets an example on the ice, that playing soft is unacceptable can add value.   The point made before is that while our third line of GLO has added excellent defense, good possession stats, and chips in occasionally on Offense, it's the fourth line that has been abysmal.  And removing one player (Sheary, Erod, or Vesey) and replacing them with an energy guy is not going to affect the scoring sheet.  It could however have an impact in some other capacity.

And as an FYI, Scoring isn't the Sabres biggest problem this year.  They are 17th overall in 5v5 goals for, and ahead of their pace for goals scored the last 6 years.  And significantly above the pace  from 2015/16 when a certain center and forward were on the roster.   This includes a slump in goal scoring the last 4 games.  Maybe, just maybe RK and JB know more than you and think that rather than let the team spiral downward, adding an accelerant can have a positive affect.

Accelerants are substances that can bond, mix or disturb another substance and cause an increase in the speed of a natural, or artificial chemical process.   This is what I hope he does.  And if others don't want to play with passion, they can sit and watch the game from above.

Two different sports, requiring different skill sets.  An NFL GM builds his team mainly through the draft and free agency.  A GM with good scouting skills makes a good GM.

Because the NHL draft is riskier than the NFL draft (drafting 18 year olds vs 20 year olds), and the NHL free agency pool is much shallower than the NFL pool, NHL GMs need to use the trade market much more than NFL GMs do.

And experience is an asset when evaluating the trade market.

When reviewing Botterill's record, he's done okay in the draft; he's okay when it comes to free agency; but he's been terrible when it comes to the trade market.  He got too little in return from the Kane and O'Reilly trades.  He made targets of mediocre players like Sobotka, Sheary, and Sobotka.

He's been unable use the trade market to resolve the glut at defensemen, which calls into question his ability to manage the salary cap.  (If Krueger scratches Bogosian and Miller, that's close to $8 million sitting in the press box.  That money could pay for a 2nd center.)

So having a GM that has better experience in the trade market would help the Sabres, where it really isn't needed by the Bills.

Average age of an NFL draft selection is 21.7,  which strengthens your original point.

I’m going to respect @Wyldnwoody44 and not rehash the past.  Suffice to say the trades for our surplus D’men need to be acceptable.

The mere fact Dalton Smith is in the line up is a good sign.  I hope Cernak has the balls to answer the bell, and he gets lit up light a Christmas tree.  The NHL did not deliver the proper punishment for the hit on Dahlin, so we need to extract our own.  Looking forward to the game.

So the Reino-on-his-own-line experiment (which I thought worked reasonably well) is over after 1 game?

I suppose they needed to reshuffle the lines to accommodate Dalton "Fists of Fury" Smith.

Agree on both points.  I think they have to do this for this game, but would like to see Sam back on FL#2 in Jan.

  12. What can I say, the Patriots loss and subsequent drop to #3 overall in the AFC and having to play next week has inspired positivity.

    • Olafssons 5v5 play continues to improve.   He is winning battles on the boards and contributing to keeping pucks deep.
    • The Sabres outplayed this team tonight for most of the game.  Considering how strong their PP is, having only one brief lapse leaving DeBrusk open in front, the Sabres PK was good.  Refs had some questionable calls again but that’s life.  The double minor penalty was absurdity.
    • Risto was a plus player, pitched in on the O-fence, and was responsible in the D zone.
    • Jack stayed out with the second PP unit and they actually had shots on goal.

Question-  Pasternak was double shifted multiple times tonight.   Why doesn’t Jack take a few shifts (5v5) with MaJo and Sam, or Sheary/Vesey?

    • The Sabres almost equaled the Bruins in Faceoffs won (25 v 26).   Not bad for a team DFL (and it’s not even close) in Face Off %.

Ullmark in net, Larsson back, Scandella out until Tuesday.

Bogosian on the ice this AM with Ullmark, so he appears to be out as well.

Before his last start in Philly, Hutton sat 12 days between starts.  I can’t see him getting the start at home against TB on NYE, so could be two weeks or more between games.  He might not see any games until a back to back in mid Jan.  And that’s a good thing.

The massive hype for him didn't start in earnest until after that tournament. The hype isn't why Botterill drafted him, true.

Agree that the hype catapulted him to think he could play pro after one mediocre year of collegiate hockey.   I’m not a scout so have no clue how you could use high school or one year of USHL to rank him 8 overall.

    World. Junior. Championship.

A top tier institution in hockey who’s overrated significance has long jumped the shark. As did what they thought they could charge for tickets.

He didn’t play on the 2017 Junior team.  He played on the 2018 team after the Sabres already drafted him in June of 2017.  Tage was on the 2017 team.

I was thinking last night, which players do I want on this team July 1, 2020. The list is short.

I was thinking about this the other day looking a CapFriendly and our UFA/RFA’s.  Victor is the only must sign in July.  Montour and Reinhart have fallen off the map for me.  Larsson/Grigs - nice to have but would not miss them.   E-rod, nice knowin’ ya.  Sheary and Vesey, low cost experiments.  Next.  If they can move Jake or Miller I could live with Marco.
