An abundance at Center? Really, enlighten me. As far as cap space goes we have about 19 million in cap space next year. I don't know where you get your numbers from but they are wrong.

I pulled the data from CapFriendly (below) and your correct, it does not appear to match.   Their projected cap of $75.5M does not equal the sum of Forwards, D, IR and Goal.  I've never seen this not calculated correctly.  The sum of this is $65.91M.  So assuming the Salary Cap does not change ($81M), WPG has $15M in space.    My comments still stand  regarding how quickly that money will need to be spent, AND more importantly WHERE IT GOES.  You need to sign 3 Defenders, and two of them have to be quality.   The medium positional spending for Defense is $21M.   WPG has allocated under $11M as of today.  Third lowest in the league.  The analytics backed up the eye test this season suggesting that WPG gave up way too many high danger chances and their Expected GA was second worst in the league.  If Helley goes down for 3-4 weeks, the season is dust. There is definitely going to be at least $8M spent there retooling.   Add $1.5-2M for a back up Goalie.   Forwards you need 5.  So even if they give their bottom 3 min contracts of $700K, with Roslovic due a raise  that adds another $4M.  Leaving $1M in space.  Moving Copp or Lowry is not going to get you under.  Their first is going to be around #17 overall.  Not very valuable.  Let's make a friendly wager that most of the offseason moves are on the Blue line and not at Center.

I'd like to see the Jets move Bryan Little onto a third line of Harkins Little Roslovic after they trade for Cirelli from TB.

I'm not sure what TB is going to do even if the cap goes up a bit. They're at the limit as it is. They are going to lose some players because of the cap. Too many of their players have NMCs if you ask me.

Cirelli might be the best center out there that not many are talking about. I'd give up a 1st, Lowry or Copp (their choice) and Niku for Cirelli. He has good defensive smarts, he is an RFA with no arbitration rights (Chevy's favorite) coming off of his ELC and is unsigned. He could probably be had in an offer sheet but I can't see too many teams doing that. I'd love to see Chevy trade for him and get him in a Jets uniform as I think he is on the verge of breaking out and becoming a star.

There is zero percent chance Cirelli goes to the Peg.  The primary reason is you have no Cap space to support this.  Assuming the Cap stays at $81m, Your team has $7.5 to sign 4 Forwards, 3 D and a backup Goalie.   Newsflash.  Cirelli’s AAV will be north of $7m by itself.  Secondarily, they have $10.5 committed to the Blue line.  It’s more probable than not you actually trade a current forward to beef up it rather than add to the forward ranks.  Third, Winnipeg has an abundance at Center already.   Adding Cirelli to the Peg and ignoring other holes would be the equivalent of the NY Yankees forgoing a pitcher acquisition to get a DH to add more home runs to its line up.   Lastly, your package for trade is light.   None of those players are grade A and your 1st round pick is too low.   You haven’t the assets to move the needle.

Honestly, I'm kind of hoping for cap agreement between the NHL and the PA with a buyout.  I'm buying out KO, hopefully signing Tyler Johnson (if TB buys him out) and then re-signing Simmonds and Larsson for the 4th line

    VO Jack Reinhart

    Skinner Johnson Toffoli

    MoJo Cozens/Mitts Kahun

    Asplund/Lazar Larsson Simmonds.

    I like that forward group.

You should hope there is no agreement for a compliance buyout. While the KO contract may be considered toxic the Sabres have an estimated  $37million in Cap Space and that is their biggest asset this July.  As @nfreeman mentioned, the Sabres are a bottom 3  (maybe bottom 5) destination, so you are better off using that space to pry your next 2C from a team that might be up against the cap.  A player like Cirelli will not be moving by an offer sheet.  The only way a player like that ends up on a Sabres team is if Tampa is constrained and has no other options.  A Sophie’s Choice - which would almost always result in TB keeping Segechev over Cirelli and needing help to ensure Cernak stays too.  If you give teams with less than  $15m in space a free out, then we lose leverage.  Especially those with top flight RFA’s.  KO can find a niche on a retooled third Line with Lazar and MaJo.  And I’m not suggesting they have to take on players like Hunwick or Sobotka in return.  You accept cap, but players that can still contribute.

And while I agree it will be challenging to acquire any top level UFAs, the glut of Goalies makes a signing there much more plausible than other positions.   Unfortunately I think if (when?) JB is retained, he chooses to stick with Carter Hutton.

I would love to buy out KO, and I think it's reasonably likely that the NHL and the PA agree on some kind of compliance buyout arrangement.

I would also love to sign Johnson, but he'll have plenty of suitors.  He's probably not coming here, and definitely not on a cheapo 2-year deal.

I think Larsson will choose to leave as he is probably tired of losing.

I do not want Simmonds back.  He's done like dinner.

Because they are so close to the CBA expiring, would expect them to both default into distrust mode, but maybe this crisis has them seeing they're actually in this together.  Could see the players going for it if the compliance bought out players get their full salary and they don't count against the players' share of HRR.  The other wildcard in all this is that small revenue teams like Arizona and Florida would likely oppose it.  Arizona could be in great shape if the cap goes down; they'd have no incentive to help big payroll teams out of a jam.

I'm not sure Arizona is in 'great' shape if the Cap does not move.   They have $75M committed with only 9 Forwards signed.    Not much you can get with $6M or about $1.5/player.    Unless they offload other players they haven't the space to sign Hall.  The shortened season might close the book on that trade as a swing and a miss.   The Yotes are 5th from the bottom in the West, and will be in the lottery.  So unless they win the lottery, they will be sending a  high 1st round draft pick this year along with their 2021 3rd to NJ for what?  Not including their prospects that were included.

Megatrends ... this will accelerate great change.  Much was already in the works.

    1).   China loses big.

2).   Any brick and mortar is worth less.  The acceleration of middle class mall decline is here.

3).   Bloated secondary education is taking it right in the gut.  Brick, mortar, dorms with spas, gyms and pools, and curricula that requires debt but can’t repay debt (a cocaine and hookers and meth party that’s nearly two generation old).

    4)    Bank branches, already on life support, go away (this is, ironically, good for banks and a consumer choice).

    5)    Automobile sales decline by a similar proportion to the drop in office workers.

I’d be interested in the thoughts or observations of others ...

  7. If Terry and Kim can make what appears to be a colossally poor decision as it pertains to game-day workers, why should we believe he is going pull the cord on the GM?  He is literally the 6th wealthiest NHL owner and struggles to commit payments for hourly employees who are clearly suffering. Jeremy Jacobs is getting roasted in Boston (and rightfully so) for an equally insensitive and business first attitude.  Probably not a coincidence they are friends.  But the Pegula's beyond bad decision making as it pertains to part-time workers amid the pandemic seems par for the course.  Exiting JB early would require forethought, awareness, and perception.  In other words, opposite of what has  recently manifested from the executive suites at the Harbor Center.   I felt like a GM change was a 50/50 before the shortened season, and feel like it has fallen to 30/70 at this point.

  10. Has anyone seen McMillions on HBO?  As far as documentaries go this could have been done a lot better and edited down to about two hours, but the story is fascinating and the characters involved are engaging.  It’s all about one guy who ran security for the Marketing company McDonalds used for Monopoly game in the 90’s, and how he was able to steal all the winning pieces ($100k to $1,000,000) and distribute to a network of friends and family.

Have we stumbled on another potential solid line?  The Euro line of MoJo, VO and Kahun seems to have some instant chemistry and is creating offense.  If that lines produces for rest of the season, would that change how we approach the off-season? Would it depend on whether prospects like Cozens or Mitts prove ready?

    For example

    F1 Jeff, Jack, Sam
    F2/3 VO MoJo Kahun

    F2/3 ????

    F4 Girgensons Larsson KO

Regardless of who is on your F3 line, if your penciling in MoJo or Kahun on your second line, we are not going to the playoffs for a 10th year.  Especially with the current options you offered in net.   MoJo needs to be on the third line with a hopefully mature and more polished Cozens.  When the Sabres win the lottery, I can see a path for the new GM packaging MoJo in a trade as we would have a surplus at LW.

Two years to UFA. And the Sabres would be foolish to agree to a three year deal for that much. They'd only be paying for one UFA year.

If Sam wants term he'll start with an ask of 8 years at 7-plus and the Sabres will respond with 6 for 6.

If Sam isn't interested in term, it will likely be decided with a relatively cheap one year deal and Sam will sign his next contract with another team after being traded at or before the 2021 draft.

I can see this happening if it's a new GM, or J.B. returning for one more year.  If it's a new GM, he (or she - cannot have the presumption of bias pervading my post) gets a free look for one year before committing anything long term, or trade as you suggest.  And if Terry is on the fence about JB does he really allow/approve an 8 year extension?

    Maturity and confidence.

Dahlin is 19, let him mature and get his confidence.

He's good enough obviously to be in the NHL but a good coach should also know how to bring him along and know his limitations. When he's 22-23 and not playing all facets of the game then I'll be upset/worried.

I'm also not saying he shouldn't play on the PK now. But if Krueger believes that it's to much to ask of him I will respect that decision.

Agree to not rush him to the PK, especially this one. But the tandem of Dahlin and Miller should get a chance to be top pair over Risto and  Montour at 5v5.  If nothing else it’s a measuring stick on progress.

And as long as they continue to be the top d line against top players they will be bad. We should be trying other players in those roles to see how they perform.

The Dahlin/Miller pairing is playing better together each game.  Why are they not getting a chance to play as top pair? Does Kruger believe there is some other advantage of playing Dahlin against lower lines? I have no idea, but agreed a chance should be provided to another pairing.

First off, defence on a PP its not about "his man" it's about getting into passing and shooting lanes and protecting against 2-on-1s. Risto starts the play where he should be, between the goal line player, the bumper and the shooter, ready to move to each as the play requires.

The structural breakdown actually happens when MacKinnon bobs and weaves his way into stranding Lazar too high on the blue line, giving him a direct line to the goal and a ton of ice to work with. If Risto collapses he leaves Mac and the partially covered bumper a clear lane to the goal. If he charges, same thing. He elects to split the difference in order to eliminate Mackinnon's shot, thinking he has the support of Frolik on the bumper and Landeskog is in the least dangerous position of the three players he is responsible for.

Unfortunately Landeskog and Mackinnon are really good. Mac attacks Risto, freezes him by faking a pass to the bumper while Landeskog attacks the hole. Mac zips the pass into exactly the right space, and Landeskog beats Hutton on a 180-degree spinaround that 4 out 5 players would missed and another 4 out of 5 would not have even tried, instead opting to stay at home to make a pass, or stuff the puck into Hutton's pads.

The goal wasn't because of a Risto mistake, it was because two really good players executed the PP perfectly. The best defencemen in the league get beat on that play.

LGR - Are you taking notes?  School’s in, son.   You should probably send a ? and move on.  Great analysis.

I never felt that was true. Come to think of it now, I kind of felt about him the same as I do about Sam now - I never thought of that before but I think maybe yes. Very talented hockey player but inconsistent effort and I always felt he never really gave his all or tried to be all he could be. Sort of just rested on his given gifts. If he'd given it his all, he could have been one of the greats, but as is he was just a goal scorer with questionable defensive skills. Sorry, that's just how I feel about him.

The dude missed 27 games total in 9 years in Buffalo.  What's one level below Iron?  Maybe in his later years where it was reported he was not in good physical condition and used his skill to get by you could question effort, but just b/c a player isn't skating around with his head on fire and hitting everything in sight does not mean there was no effort.

Also with respect to your Reinhart comparison-  When Thomas signed his contract in 2007 with an AAV of $7.14M, that was over 14% of the team cap.   So you should feel good about a $7.5-$8M number for Sam as that would only be 9%.

I'm going to dissent and say no to both parts of that.

I still think matching the Oilers offer was a huge mistake for this franchise. We were a really good team with Drury, Briere and Vanek and then we screwed it up royally and had just Vanek. Big mistake era.

You, a dissenter?  Shut the front door.   You cannot blame Thomas for the mistakes of Darcy at the end of his career or the restrictions imposed on the GM by ownership.   He was a pure goal scorer.  Questionable ethics as it pertains to gambling, but solid on the ice.  Your an effort guy.  Thomas brought his lunch pail to work each day.  How can you not respect that?
