Wasn't it just the previous game when we successfully pulled the goalie late on the PP and scored to send the game to OT? Didn't visit that game day thread. Was everyone complaining about how stupid Ralph was?

Why does Ralph need to fix Jeff Skinner? Why doesn't Jeff have to fix Jeff? Why doesn't Sabrespace's pet get called out for his poor production, body language and failure to hustle on the backcheck?

Leaf fans have to frustrated that a team with that much puck skill continues to be vulnerable due to its unmitigated arrogance.

This.   Remember what Ralph said....'The past is not the present. It's the past. We will work with the present, and what you're doing today and what you're giving the team today will decide where your role is, what your minutes are, and how much you are playing a part in our process'.

I agree wholeheartedly.   Jeff earned his extension.  Now he needs to keep earning his paycheck.   He makes $9M/AAV.   He needs be better.

    Rodrigues or Sheary.

Due to his versatility, would rather keep E-Rod around if 1 is kept past this season; but really don't see either back at this point.  (The only 2 guys besides Bogosian, Sobotka, and Hunwick that seem to be nearly locks to be gone next year.  (Don't even have Scandella in the near lock category but have him about 50-50.))

Sam did not impress  me today.

    9, 26, and 55 did.

Agree.   And the bold is why I can take something positive out of a tie.  Dahlin had a great game.   Physical early.  Moved the puck great when working 5v5 with Jacks line, and had two great saves at the blue line to keep the puck inside on the PP that tied the game.  If I can have that Rasmus every game signed me up.

Oh and the future of the Islanders organization took a stupid penalty with under 4 to play while the future of the Buffalo Sabers tied the game in the final minute, and outside one poor pass had another solid game.   How many times was a brilliant game followed up by something less than acceptable? Now he brings it every night (or day).

You don't sit a bad contract because you want to pout about it. The situation with Okposo is clearly, obviously not Botterill's doing. You know how Botterill "solved" it? You do what RK is doing and make the most of it.

People can bitch about the ROR trade and it's valid, especially because we're missing details. Bitching about the cost of our "fourth" line because Okposo is on it is absurd.

It’s not absurd at all.  And I’m not “bitching” about it.   I like what RK has done with what is clearly a bad contract.  Some of the best Lemonade I’ve tasted.  What I stated was due to a bad contract, decisions must be made to mitigate the cap hit taken by one player.  Giving long term contracts to both Larsson and Girgs and spending over $9m on a fourth line is foolish.   Show me a Stanley Cup team that employs this logic.  And one by choice, not circumstance.   Both contracts are due in July and they were one year deals for a reason.  If Larsson is extended it’s because he is versatile, could play third line if needed, and RK prefers centers.  Aspland and Lazar could easily fill in on the fourth line in 2020 for about 1/3 of the cost and not miss a beat.

You threw Kyle's numbers into the Larrson- Girgs talk.

Kyle is an albatross. The Sabres can never skimp enough on veteran player contracts to make up for that bad signing. We would icing an AHL team.

I hope the Sabres don't cheap out and not sign anyone good because they might have to pay the going rate for them.  I also hope  that the Sabres aren't looking to sign only players that come on the cheap because we have Kyle.

But Kyle (and his Albatross contract) is relevant to the conversation.   The Sabres priority in the off-season is another top 6 player, preferably a Center.   Whether a UFA or Trade, this position will demand a high AAV.   Resigning Sam, and managing for futures.

There was comments above about these are the type of players that Boston has.  And while that may be true, Boston also sheds players like this when offered better deals.    They have players like Wagner or Kurali.  And players like Schaller, or Moore or Nash.  But their contracts are for league mins, or $1.5M at the high end, and when they are offered deals from other teams in the $3.5+, they move on.  We live in a salary cap era where decision are made based on priorities.  For me I'm much rather substitute a Lazar and TBD on my fourth line to pay a higher end Center $7.5-8.5M and play top 6 minutes.

Botterill will keep both as long as the term and price is right.

They are playing 3rd and possibly 2nd  line minutes at a 4th line cost.

They are out at the end of games with 1 goal leads and winning.

I just don't think they are *that easy* to replace.

GLO AAV = $9.1M.   This is way above a fourth line cost.  I like them all, but if you have a $6M 4th (3rd?) line player, you need to make concessions elsewhere.   You cannot have both come back on $2.25-2.5M AAV,  or we an $11M 4th line for 2021 & 2022.   If KO goes to LTIR, then it's a different story.

Danny Gare scoring 4 goals while my friend and I (and his parents) sat in seats given to us by their neighbor in Lockport, Ted Darling. They were 2nd row, in the corner.

Sweethome and Southpark getting into a fight during a sectional basketball game and fans of both teams jumping over rows of seats to get involved.

Ray Hall and Mike Smrek for Canisius taking on the Reggie Lewis lead Northeastern squad in hoops.

Joe Arlaukas led Niagara vs. Lionel Simmons lead LaSalle in the NIT.

Tom Barrasso backstopping Team USA to a victory over the Czech's and he was so good the opposing team was tapping his pads in admiration of some of the saves.

First ever rock concert...the supergroup Asia...with my Mom! (I was maybe 13)

Rush "Grace Under Pressure" tour with my friend (same as the Gare 4 goal game) and his older brother. Too many fumes in the blues and my friend yakked his guts out on the way home.

Boston, Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden, Yes, The Moody Blues (with SRV opening!)....

Sitting the oranges trying to focus on a Braves game when I was probably 7 years old.

Funny.  Asia was my first concert as well.  I was in the seventh grade and went with kids from my school.  No parents and an eye-opening experience with all the weed from the Yes fans who were much older.

Other great concerts:  U2 Joshua tree, Steely Dan, Rush, page/plant, Bush and No Doubt.

I remember in the 70s as a kid that the patrons in Lower Gold dressed much nicer than our family.   I was down to catch a puck then back to the orange.   Seeing Guy Lafluer with the flowing hair was impressive.   Sabres scoring 13 on the Cleveland Barons was a treat.

The afternoon games before the Superbowls were a blast.  Garcia’s for drinks before/after.

Dressing up for the Halloween games.  Chatting up Ed Kilgore in the Blues a few times.

I also remember Saturday afternoon family/ open ice skates.  I can’t fathom that idea these days.

I remember the feeling the first time we had gold seats.  I scrapbooked the stub, thinking life couldn’t be much better.

Great topic, thanks for starting this.

Here’s something to consider: pretty much every NHL team these days has an 8-2 and a 2-8 run in them and will experience both over the course of the year.

It’s the nature of parity, OT and the way the game is played today. And it’s why we probably shouldn’t overreact to any hot or cold stretch.

Enough  logical thought.  This is a gosh darn fan forum.   Over reactions are what we do best!

I am honestly shocked that only PI added advanced stats to build his case.   I'll add on to his petition for Scandella.

1.) The aforementioned +/-  , impressive mark for a Buffalo D man.  Better than Montour and Joki.

2.) Relative Corsi and Fenwick leading the D core with 50/50 O and D zone starts.   Montour for example has worse numbers with a 60% Offensive zone start.

3.) Wins and Losses.  Sabres are 12-6-4 with Marco in the line up. (He was injured in the Ranger game and missed a bunch of losses including Washington, NYI and two in SWE); And he literally saved the Toronto game by himself.

4.) With and without - check out 2018 vs 2019.

The Joker simply doesn't make a lot of gaffes.  He is dependable, smart, and has an offensive upside.  I have to give props to JBOT here.  He won that trade by a mile so far.

According to Hockey reference he has 1 takeaway with 16 Giveaways.  That leads our Defensive core.  Even more than Rasmus and I would have bet even money Dahlin had more.  In fact his ratio of Take/Give is by far the worse.   Love the potential but there are gaffes.   And agree he won the trade so far.

Hey man,   I traded Eddie Shack for Rene Robert.  Traded Joe Daley for Luce and Robitaille.  Got Jim Lorentz for a bag of pucks.

Risto has worth.   Risto and a #2 for Hall (assuming we agree in contract).  Jbot just say this  “ Risto has size, strength, low age, lots of experience.  Let’s do this deal and play hockey.  You need help and so do I.  Win win. Right here is the deal.  They will laugh at me later, but I’m will to take a chance”.

Punch - I take umbrage that you traded a "bag of pucks" for me.   You traded the #21 overall for me.   Don't you remember?    Just b/c the Rangers used it on Larry Sacharuk does not mean it wasn't high value.

  13. I'm firmly in the camp that he has done something, only that its mostly to the Defense.   Look at all trades in the last 12+ Months.  Joki, Miller, Montour, Beaulieu, and Fedun.    The only trade on the Forward side is Vesey, and so far that is a fail.  This is based on the fact it was only a 3rd.   And in terms of Free agency,  the Skinner signing fell in the category of Vanek -  you had to do it.  I don't give credit or blame.   Marcus Johansson is a plus.  Lazar is replacement level and came with no risk, only potential.  Understanding it takes two to tango, I ask what is the  real value of our Defense?  Scandella, Bogo, McCabe, Risto, or Miller.   I've heard rumors on all of these players as tradable assets, but maybe there are offers but JB fears getting swindled again, and this is giving him pause.   Meanwhile, Winnipeg whom we all thought would be desperate for a defender and coming to the table  with a top six forward in return is 15-9-1 and third in their division with only 2 of last years starting 6 on Defense.    So I ask, seriously, after watching Risto play the last week or two, what is his value?  It's like my stock in Uber.   Over the summer I thought it was a great buy falling to $34.  Not feeling that great in late November.  I fear we are going to get 2nd and 3rd round picks (or equivalents in prospects) from a top tier team needing a 5-6 depth D for some of these players and how does that help this year or next?  I think the only teams serious about trading are teams that have players they are trying to dump.  The Preds healthy scratch Turris the last 5 games - and he is an anchor on their cap @ $6M for the next 4+years.  Want to take a flier on that?  Nope.  Can Jason Zucker be had straight up for Risto?  I don't think so.  Chris Kreider?  Another UFA?  Pass on another LW Blue Shirt.    So unless he is willing to trade a real asset I cannot see how we are going to be realize help in the top 6 this year.
