I'm with the Montour detractors, but if we have to have him I agree with this. Problem is we don't have that guy. JBot seems to think 6 PMD is the way to go, but my view would be 3 PMD max. paired, in primarily set pairings, with 3 SAH guys (as in stay at home, or tough in front of the net or defensively responsible or whatever you want to call them - eg. Boston Carlo with Krug).  Borgen might develop into one, Risto playing the right way could be one, but really, we don't have them.

Borgen is definitely one, and could be a possible pair with Pilut on the third next year.  The ascent of Joki on the right makes Montour somewhat expendable.  Especially how you pair.   Dahlin, Joki and Pilut are PMD.  You have Risto and Borgen as SAH.  You cannot give a large free agent contract to him when you still need another LD to pair with him.  McCabe is not the answer in my opinion.  Question is what kind of return would he garner?  Plus McCabe has been part of the losing, so even if I can get past this there just needs to be a purging of players associated with the losing.

I’d rather f paid Nyquist 5.5 for four years than the contract we gave Skinner

Comparing organizational decisions over the past six years to Buffalo’s will almost always look favorably on the opposition.  That is not the debate.  The comment originated on whether or not the Columbus GM is Great.  It was never is he better than JB.  I think that is obvious.

Look at what a great coach and a great GM can do despite losing elite talent in free agency. Now look at our incompetent GM and you know why we are the shitshow of the league.

Never a fan of Torts personality, but cannot deny his results.  He gets more from less than anyone.  As far as their GM, I couldn’t call him great.  The trades of a first and 2 seconds last year will have an impact down the road.   Nyquist signing is questionable at $5.5m.   Not his fault his three biggest UFA’s left town but it’s not like they made any moves to fill those holes.  Not defending JB by any means.
vegas has buffalo as -110 or even on the Moneyline.  Wonder why.  Seems like our season is over and would be an easy Columbus win.  But they know way more than us, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sabres win.

Would Hutton pull an Al Smith? Would he be able to find JBOT to “wave” goodbye?

I had never heard this story....from Wikipedia

One of the most infamous moments of his career came on February 13, 1977, when he quit the Buffalo Sabres. Reunited with former Maple Leafs coach Punch Imlach, now the Buffalo General Manager, Smith was to replace injured Sabres goalie Gerry Desjardins in a game against the Minnesota North Stars. The Sabres had also called up Don Edwards and less than an hour before game-time, Imlach ordered Sabres coach Floyd Smith to play Edwards instead.[1] After the playing of the National Anthem, Smith stepped off the bench, saluted Buffalo owners Seymour and Northrup Knox and headed for the dressing room.

Answer:  God I hope so.  We could use the cap room next year.   And I hope Johansson plays like Donny.

Like someone before me said, we don’t need an “expierienced” guy, we need the “right” guy.

    +1 on this.

Experience is just one method to learn wisdom, as the saying goes. You also have imitation, the easiest, reflection, the most noble.   But don’t discount experience, which does have value, and serves as the most bitter to obtain.

  6. Disappointing game for Lazar.  Playing against your old team, one that traded you, the effort needed to be better.

Agree with the notion that someone on the Sabres coaching staff needs to be fired.  Whoever owns the PK is a start.

Zemgus was invisible on the first line.  Not sure why the coaching staff is adamant against reuniting Skinner with Jack and Sam.

I liked how Reinhardt played tonight.  He’s increasing his trade value with every game. ?

League rules won't let them become permanent thirds unless the next royal blue uniform released next year has black in it.  The buffalo's eye makes the red acceptable, but they have no black in the logo nor the primary unis, so they aren't allowed to use black in a 3rd uni.

Then how does Vancouver wear the 78 Black Skate retro jersey?   Multiple colors in that that are not in their primary color scheme?

Rush was one of my favorite bands when I was growing up.  To me they ceased to exist after Moving Pictures; I think that their music after that is virtually unlistenable.  Still, Neil Peart was an incredible musician, and just because the band's musical tastes and mine parted ways in the early 80s doesn't change that.  They did stuff with music that literally no other band did.

    Neil Peart will be missed.

By the way, I mostly listened to the music and knew very little about the band members. I watched RUSH: Beyond the Lighted Stage on Netflix last night.... recommend it to anyone who's a fan of the band.

Appreciate the Netflix recommendation.   Took a little while to find the time.  Thoroughly enjoyed the documentary.

They need to pay state taxes to the states in which the games (including road games) are located.  So they pay much less in state taxes than players on NYS or CA teams, but it’s quite a bit more than zero.

Agreed it's not zero but it's not much at all.  This was debated in September.

"Most states measure duty days to determine when these visiting athletes should be taxed. This includes practice days, along with game days, that are spent in that state (and city depending on whether that city levies a jock tax as well). To determine the duty days spent in each visiting state, the work days spent in the visiting state are divided by the number of workdays in a season, from preseason through the postseason"

The NHL has determined their season to be 270 days, so the players is only charged for the practice days and game days played in cities/states where a state tax exists.  For Tampa Bay about 10 of their road games are in tax free states so only 30 games or about 40-50 "days" are spend inside these states.   So using Jacks $10M AAV, his N.Y.S. tax would be around $880K.  But if in Tampa bay, using a 270 day season those road games would add about 17% of his salary to those various states tax rates (average rate of $6.5%) for a tax of about $115K.  I'd say the $760K in state tax savings is enough to affect ones decision.  That and the weather.  Being able to golf, hike, bike etc in the winter definitely factors in.   I grew up in the 716 and live in a place where I can do all that and a whole lot more.   It definitely doesn't suck.

From a cap and youth standpoint this is the best case.  Otherwise you’ll be filling those positions with more expensive and older talent from outside the organization.

Because of Mitts’s and Thompson’s slower development we may be able to get them at cheaper prices longer.

If they plan on being in the playoffs next year, then two of the top Six Forward positions will be older, expensive and from another organization (whether it be by trade or UFA).  I expect this to be the plan this summer.

Pretty sure that's correct.  So keep him in Buffalo until he can be traded (IF he can be traded) and give him his own dedicated seat in the press box.  Just stop playing him ahead of Miller.

I think it's questionable if Bogosian can fetch anything, right?  So assuming he cannot, why wouldn't the only option be to waive and bury the contract?   As the resident Capologist, is this scenario (waive/clear waivers/bury) not similar to what the Bruins just did with David Backes?   According to what I read on that move, they were able to save ~$1m on their Cap to free up deadline spending.  Unless he has any trade value whatsoever where you obtain an asset in return, and have the possibility to save more (example - they withhold half of his AAV in a trade, and recognize $2m instead of $1M), why is he not waived immediately?

The best case scenario for the Sabres two years from now is for Cozens to develop into a viable 2C and either Thompson or Mitts to develop into his RW.  However we must keep Reinhart.

    Top 6 of

    VO Eichel Reinhart

    Skinner Cozens Mitts/Thompson

That's the goal.  We must keep our good players and jettison the rest.

Jbot needs to get a viable 2C for the next year or two to bridge that gap.

Not sure this is the best case scenario.  Based on Mitts play in Rocha-cha, and what we saw from Thompson last year I'm not sure this is even the most probable case.  There is a lot of cap space and pieces to be moved to acquire a true 2C or 2RW.   We need to "BE BETTER".

In my mind's eye, Jan 28th will be the dawn of a new season.    All prior transgressions will be forgiven as we look towards the future.

I've outlined a seven step process to help fellow SabreSpacers achieve this same level of clarity.

    1. Identify your source of pain...  Hutton, Bogo/Rodrigues, injuries to Skinner/Olofsson, dressing 7 D, lack of secondary scoring for long stretches, wasting peak Eichel years, a precipitous fall from grace after a scorching hot October, etc.
    2. Acknowledge your hurtful emotions...  I can confirm, without any doubts, that the Sabres as an organization have inflicted emotional pain on myself and others.
    3. Forgive yourself and let go... I, pi2000, hereby absolve myself of any wrong doing for falsely believing this team was different than years past.
    4. Breathe in compassion...  I understand the Sabres are trying to be better and any emotional trauma inflicted on their fans is in fact unintentional.
    5. Forgive unconditionally... This means you @LGR4GM-  Forgive Pi for his comments on Sam, "For he knows not what he is doing".... Luke 23:34.
    6. Be grateful...Most of the toxic contracts end in June.  July begins a New Hope for the future.
    7. Love again...Ralph Krueger has made Risto acceptable;  Even by the stats community.   "You love me.  You really love me".

    need help for steps 5-7

It's been bad, it continues to be bad. Why the ***** is he getting ice time at all? Waive him and be done with it.

Can you turn this into a poll?  Where we can vote on keep, waive or gets traded.   I thought he might garner a 4th or 5th, but if we continue to see games like last night, I can’t see any trade value.

It's constant, and it's referenced in every post so no point in rehashing it over and over again cause you'll just say I'm wrong and I'll say you're wrong and it'll never end. Almost every game I notice moments where he slacks or floats. Several times in last night's game Jack and Zemgus were working their butts off and Sam was just back waiting by the wall. So a defender says "great positional play" but the end result too often was they were outnumbered and Dallas gained possession despite good efforts from Jack and Zemgus. All too often 3 guys go back to the bench and only 2 of them are out of breath. It's his great conditioning right? I think not.

Bottom line for me on Sam. If he worked as hard as Lazar (a much less talented player but with a great attitude) he'd be a perennial allstar. I'm tired of waiting. It'll never happen.

Problem with this speculation is that Dubas and everyone else could have acquired Miller for a lot less then Kapanen before Buffalo acquired him. Maybe his private numbers don’t match the public numbers always associated with Miller.

This. @TrueBlueGED - look at the compensation we gave Vegas.  It was  a St. Louis 2nd in 2021 (presumably low) and our 5th in 2022 (hopefully low).   And his stock has dropped somewhat since the trade.  If the original trade is the starting point, is this not far less compensation you might obtain for a 20 goal/45 point player who is 23?  Washington received more for  Burakovsky, and he was less accomplished, although playing better in COL.
