He was the 6th best player at best on those teams. He's on the cover shot for recent relevance because now he's Steph Curry's passenger.

Actually 7th.  Luc Longly had more MPG and PPG than Kerr for those Championship teams.  Weren’t they all passengers to some extent?  Isn’t that the point of the documentary?  They assembled complimentary players to play with MJ.

The production and editing on this project is quite impressive.  Never a fan of those Bulls teams but always respected them.   Great job of weaving interviews from 97 and today.

  2. From LeBrun today...

On the idea of a June NHL draft, which has been a hot potato ever since it was proposed a few weeks ago.

“So, it’s one of a number of things we’re working on,” said Daly. “And when I say working on, when we’re talking to the clubs we’re discussing it in more detail. We want to understand their concerns, we want to understand the pros and the cons. So there’s no rush on our end. Particularly with where we think the earliest we can play in, we have a window to fit the draft in if we wanted to go in that direction. And when we get to the end of that process, whenever that is, we’ll make a decision. But we’re not there yet. I do anticipate, obviously, at some point, whether it’s this week or next week, probably more likely next week, you’re going to have to make a decision. But nothing is imminent.”

My take: The memo that the league sent to the 31 clubs on May 1 made it seem like the June draft was headed toward a done deal. But ever since last Monday’s Board of Governors call, there has been a clear slowing of momentum on it. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but I would certainly present that there’s been enough pushback from teams to make Daly and Bettman think about it again. It’s probably more of a toss-up now whether the draft happens in June or after the season is over in the fall. Either way, sounds like we should know sometime next week.

We can only hope for the underlined.

I’m really confused by so many here thinking this improved team is going to take a step back. What in McBeane’s track record says this team is regressing?  Besides injuries how does an improved roster from a 10-6 team take a step backward, especially with NE likely taking a step back.  The Jets and Mia maybe improved, but are they really improved enough to overtake the Bills?  I doubt it.

Ill say it here now, the East is the Bills to lose.  They will win this division and be up there with KC and Baltimore.

Maybe some here think they are taking a step back but Vegas does not.  The 2019 Win Total for the Bills was 6.5.  This years it’s 9, on what many consider a more difficult schedule.  That coupled with 4 prime time games spells respect.  Vegas also has the Pats at 9 which is fascinating.   Conceivably no QB to speak of, a questionable receiving group, and status quo on the line.  Big losses on defensive side in Collins and van Noy.  The Bills need to beat NE twice (and they should) to attain 10, and prevent Belicheat from meeting 9.

I don't consume a lot of Tv news, intentionally. I didn't;t know this was a thing, either.

    I also think it's stupid.

Any industry wants to take care of their own.

If I was an NBA fan, I would want them all tested and then sent back on the court to entertain me.

Just as I want all the NHL players to be tested, so they can get back on the ice to entertain me.

    Is this really a thing?

    That's why.

Can you though?  Get more for Risto than Montour?  Why not trade them both?

I'd rather take a swing at a RD like Alex Pietrangelo as a true #1 to pair with Dahlin, as opposed to the $10M in AAV you'd spend on two #2's.  Or maybe 'Buf' on  a smaller & shorter agreement.

The Sabres don't face a "cap penalty ... for being over the cap." They never exceeded their BF-LTIR cushion.  They will however have Dahlin's bonuses & any that any of the other ELC guys earned come out of next year's cap because their actual cap salary exceeded the cap and there is no money banked under this season's cap to cover those.  Those and Connolly's buyout are the only reductions to next year's cap (whatever it happens to be) that the Sabres face at present.

Connolly?  Have you been watching MSG classics?

I know where you're getting that from.  As much of an ass as Jerry Krause was, he made the deal to get Scottie Pippen.  He hired Phil Jackson as coach. He drafted Horace Grant. He traded Charles Oakley for Bill Cartwright. He drafted BJ Armstrong, he brought in Dennis Rodman.

Players do win games, but somebody needs to get the players onto the team.

'Crumbs' certainly gets credit for the building around MJ, but his quote (out of context or not) is uniquely tied to a Dynasty that was elevated by the best player to ever play the game.    I agree with all of the above, and throw in Tony Kukoc as a second round pick.   But here is where I dissent.  MJ established his dominance in year 2 (1985) but it took Jerry 6 years  (7 if you include the 90/91 year) to win their first championship.  Can you imagine if JB was given another 4 years to get the job done?  He also has to own the collapse after Jordan left.  The next two years they finished D.F.L. in the Central.  Other points include his decision bring in Tim Floyd as head coach in 97, which was over-ruled by the owner himself.  And lastly he once proposed to Reinsdorf trading Jordan.

Bringing it back to the Sabres, I tend to agree with others that TPegs in not a great leader and weak ownership coupled with a below average GM is why we are in the state we are in.  Could a President of Hockey Operations Executive help, probably. Is this the guy?  Not sure.

p.s. Most fascinating thing I learned about Krause from The Final Dance was his affiliation with Reinsdorf came from time spent as a Scout for the White Sox.  In a day and age where most GM's have some kind of playing career in that sport, to jump from MLB to the NBA and not having played either (obviously) is incredible.

The Fromm pick definitely struck me as good asset/roster management.

I also saw a couple of mentions on Twitter about how the Bills were partly motivated by a desire to keep him away from the Pats. Speculation, maybe, but it's fun to think about.

p.s. I heard that his hand size is 8  7/8" -- the received wisdom is that you gotta have 9" minimum to be an NFL QB. He wants to model his game after Drew Brees (which, heck yeah), but, not for nothing, Brees has huge mits - well over 10".

speaking of good assets, Fromms Mom Lee.

uhhh...they have. I don’t know why so many are taking this as if it’s my opinion when it’s a pretty easily verifiable fact.

You can't be serious with this graphic right?  This is a single year between 2016 and 2017?   This is the SS equivalent to taking a Corsi rating for one year to prove a player  is better than what his performance in points bears out.  California has gained net population between 2010-2019, and was up between 2018 and 2019.  Also note we have more than twice the population of NY and 4* of Illinois, so size does matter....when your comparing net loss by states.   And for record, not saying that businesses are not leaving CA for TX either.  I see it all too often.   I'm just saying if taxes/income rates were the single most important element in population decline, the results would be more pronounced.

FTFY. It’s not a Rust Belt issue, it’s a tax thing.

And they are not related? The cities with declines in population are from states like NY, OH, Il, WV, PA and MI.  All have had declining manufacturing with a self reliance on local municipalities for jobs.   These states rank the highest in the Nation for local jobs per capita.  Lowered property taxes coupled with higher cost for services result in higher local/state taxes to pay for them.  Increased poverty levels with below average services leads to Population decline.   High taxes of course drives away private business from growing/staying.  It’s a vicious cycle.  If it’s just a tax thing why has California and Hawaii (13% and 11% respectively) not seen similar declines?
I took the advice of Horace Greeley about 24 years ago and I’m much better off for it.  Go West young man.

The proximity to Southern Ontario didn't prevent the team from nearly relocating two different times (early 90's if the new arena wasn't built, early 2000's if Gollisano didn't step in and save us). And according to Paul Weiland the % of ticket holders from Canada is roughly 13% so that isn't as big as you think. And as for demographics I have seen numerous articles on cities on the decline and they always mention Buffalo. But even if I were to concede the point it isn't dying rapidly it is still the second smallest market in the NHL, just ahead of Winnipeg. So yeah...

Second smallest with the best ratings In the US.

In the all too brief period where the team was good in the mid 80's the team certainly had support: when we won a playoff round (not a cup, not the conference, A SINGLE PLAYOFF ROUND) there was a goddamned parade held in the city with tens of thousands of people. Nearly 20 years later when Carolina won a cup their celebration was a few thousand people in a ***** parking lot. The team was purchased by Rich Gordon who proceeded to completely destroy the team by by running it in the most incompetent manner possible and destroying all the hard work Howard Baldwin did in making them so successful. The team being a punching bag/laughingstock is what killed them, not the nonsense about market size. If the Whalers had ever won a cup the number of rags and rooinz fans in CT would've fallen off a cliff. And as for you saying it can't happen here: what's the second fastest dying major city in America (that also lacks the well off areas of the suburbs of the fastest dying city)?

Are you a Demographer whalermike?  Buffalo has lost roughly 2% of its population since the last census of 2010.  Too many cities in the rust belt to name losing population.   The proximity to Southern Ontario guarantees the subsistence of the organization.

  13. 4 hours ago, sabremike said:

YAY another person who buys the NHL's ***** propaganda about why they had to murder the Whalers  Don't think you'd like to know our fate if Botts traded Jack for whomever would be a modern day equivalent of John Cullen so yeah, you might want to slow your roll on that one.

Hartford is a small city/large town of less than 125k.   It could garner no fan support outside its own county, with surrounding areas fans of either the Bruins or the Rangers.  Outside of recent losing our scenario is nothing like the one that sent the Whale packing.

  14. 13 hours ago, sabremike said:

And if I win Powerball I will buy the Coyotes and move them to Hartford as the new Whalers (which has just about the same chance of happening as this team ever making the playoffs under Botts much less next season).

The probability of two independent events is the PA * PB.  So while the Sabres chance of a playoff berth under JB might be the same as your Powerball win, the owners would hardly allow a team back to the city of Hartford.   (Hartford - The Matt Ellis of former NHL cities).  Thus the probability of both occurring is lower than a playoff bid next season.

Where are these "normal" severance packages coming from?  It's been awhile since any company in my field offered that kind of severance, and if it were a performance related decision as assumed here, severance wasn't in play anywhere I've been employed.

Given what we've been hearing, I don't know how you assume PSE was on the generous side of industry standard right now.  If they are in controlling costs mode, I would imagine soft skills costs would be among the first to get cut.

In the tech industry the standards I've seen are as follows:  Manager/Sr. Manager - 2 weeks + 1 week for each year of service.  Director - 2 weeks + 2 weeks for each year of service, VP - 2 weeks + 4 weeks for each year up to one year.   Anything higher than this - Ex VP,  President of a region, CIO, COO, CFO or CEO are all based on individual contracts that lock you in for 'x' years.  If you part ways at any time you are paid through the term agreed upon.  I once reported to one of the worst EX VP's ever that was brought in from HP for a three year contract.  He was terminated after 2.  Everyone below him hated him,  and we suspected above as well.  A friend in payroll confirmed he was receiving his $350K annual salary every two weeks through year 3.  I'm not sure what his stock options or bonus impact was, but I equate these contract to that of a GM or Coach.  If you part ways, there is still an obligation to pay the remainder left on the deal.   Unless you are terminated for cause - and by this I mean egregious behavior and provable beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law, I suspect the three Executives terminated for the Sabres will receive their severance.  I'm confident that if and when the time comes when my performance is not commensurate with my salary the company moves on from me,  I'll enjoy the "Summer of George +" for my 24 years .  ?

Here is the question that I find fascinating.  Why is it we (outside @Ogre who maintains a personal relationship with some) feel bad for these Executives?  The large preponderance of us want JB fired for the poor performance of the team on the Ice.  Most of the STH's that post here seem unimpressed with the Day to Day Operations of the Sabres.  Outside the fact I think it's a top down problem, and you should not expect much improvement in these areas, should we not be happy that they are recognizing internally there are shortcomings?   The only difference I see between any of these three Execs and JB is that the immediate termination starts the clock on getting them off the payroll where as a JB termination will still require him to be paid through the end of his contract (which I'm still not sure if it was 4 or 5 years).  So it makes no difference if it's tomorrow, June 1st or December 31st.   (The underline is most likely wishful thinking).

Is it the box office manager’s fault that they couldn’t put ***** in the seats? Poor ticket sales has zero to do with the box office. That’s like blaming Target because your My Pillow isn’t as comfortable as you’d thought it would be.

If the firing of these three is performance based(I know two of them through my wife) why wouldn’t they have been fired before the Covid hit the fan, when they had the chance to look for a new job? Why now? Am I the only one that thinks this is a dick move? If these three we fired for performance then they can’t claim for UI and there’s not a jobs to apply for. What are they supposed to do? Was the performance so bad that you’d ***** them over like this? Bad timing for a performance based firing. Another trick from the old book.

Hard to defend the Sabres brass for just about anything these days, but I fall on the side this is not "Dick Move".   Based on their titles, it stands to reason most of these associates will get 6 months severance which is substantially more than 26 weeks of NYS UE benefits.  It's never a good time to be fired, but based on the current environment do you really want these under-performers (at least in the mind of upper management) collecting a paycheck and zooming with their direct reports for 2-3 months?  Only to be relieved in the summer?  I live out of town, so I cannot comment on game-day atmosphere, but I respect the STH on SS and if its not good and they feel disrespected, then cut bait.  Hire someone from out of town, from another team or a different sport altogether to bring a different mindset to the organization.   I hope they improve the experience for those  of you that do support the team as STH's.

We can't have all 3 announcing legends leave after they significantly passed their prime.  (Fortunately for Chuck Healey, the Braves left before he went to pot.)

I fear it’s already too late.   The broadcast, like the product on the ice is lacking.   As noted by others, Ray, while a fan favorite and Sabre great does not provide superior insight and knowledge that other color analysts offer.  And Rick’s mistakes have steadily increased over the past few years.   The only improvement to the Booth I’ve seen was the addition of Marty Biron.  The  Covid epidemic coupled with his already questionable health, should be the formula for retirement. maybe come back if/when the Sabres make the playoffs as a special guest.

I missed his era in Sabres hockey.  I moved to Orange County, and  this was before NHL Centre Ice had taken off.  I respect the love for him, and you can't help but love his grittiness, but most of the video I've seen of him (and Kaleta) are where they leave their feet to make hits.  Both hits in this montage display that.  I'm glad these are taken out of the game.  Both players in today's game would struggle, as they are undersized, and the rule is a disadvantage for smaller players.
