Great post. A lot of the stuff about essentially not wasting someone like Berglund’s playing style as a guy who just gets his own is something many, including myself, don’t think about or know enough about to include when making lines. My only gripes are Sobotka is certainly above Girgensons on my totem poll, Okposo is definitely in the 100% on the roster group (I know you hate him but it’s true) and I will lose my mind if Mittelstadt is not only off center but also on the FOURTH line wing.

I normally love throwbacks but those Flames ones bore me. Zero effort. Three horizontal stripes and the logo... there are plenty of teams (including the Sabres) wearing that template.

Still, none of this excuses whiffing on three second-round picks. In the draft a GM’s job is to beat the numbers, not follow them.

“Difference maker” is the most vague and subjective description for a player. Dvorak both appears to be a solid NHL player, Donato on the way. Karabacek couldnt even score in the ECHL. It’s a bad miss from GMTM. Trying to go around it is gymnastics.

The NFL has contracts with equipment companies. Those contracts help fund advancements and research. The NFL is run by the owners. Those owners absolutely could invest more in equipment advancements. It’s also known that owners were aware that equipment being used did not protect players sufficiently. That hasn’t changed. Side note on helmets: would it not make sense to put like a half inch thick layer of soft material on the outside of hockey and football helmets? On top of the helmets they already wear. Would that not soften the blow at all?

Yea, it’s a weird thing. It’s pretty rare but we’ve done it twice in the last few years (Cal O’Reilly to the Marlies and Moulson to the Reign).

We did. He has to clear waivers to be in the AHL. Once he clears he can be loaned to Ontario.

This next era of players entering pro leagues will be the first or almost the first whose parents had enough information to educate on the dangers of sports, CTE and the long-term risks. The players currently leading the leagues were putting the work in before a lot of this information was really mainstream, so they’re not going to jump off course. We’ll see if talent pools dip now that we’ve reached this point. It already has at lower levels.

Paying a guy who hasn’t even been that much better than Samson would be a disaster.
