Season-long pace is 96 points. Last year that would have been good for....you guessed it, 16th in the league. I don't think the comeback win means we're "good" any more than pooping the bed against Ottawa two weeks ago meant we were bad. Seems to me it's precisely that type of divergent outcome that an average team would produce.

If Allen still sucks next season, I'm not sure McBeane will be in the position to decide whether to bail.

Maybe? Do we really think Allen is going to be better playing after 2 more weeks than he will after the bye? If you don't think he should play at all this year, that's one thing. But if you think he should play again at some point, then I'm not sure an extra game or two on the bench will make any difference at all.

Dare I say, the only positive development. They are, but not defensively. Coming into today, they were 7th in defensive DVOA. Besides, Zay has had some nice moments this season. I'd still be surprised if he's ever more than a #3 on a good offense, but that's a lot better than the CFL player he looked like last season.

Canada is still the best, but Team USA has the potential to ice their best team since...2002? I know they won the silver in 2010, but I think I like the 2002 lineup more as a whole. Anyway, I say they have the potential to ice their best roster in almost 2 decades because the last go 'round they decided to leave 30-goal scorers at home and have Dan Bylsma as the head coach. Hopefully they're less dumb next time.

Given that Toronto has a ton of cap space this year, I wonder if they give Nylander what he wants....on a 1-year deal and then work a trade in the offseason. I have a hard time believing Nylander would want to sit out an entire season and lose an accrued year towards UFA plus an entire year of salary. OTOH, I can't see him showing up for some bargain basement deal either, given injury risk. Either way, I'm definitely surprised this has dragged out so long.

Maybe getting big minutes in Rochester is the best way to start seeing more of the latter and less of the former.

Even if the Leafs would take futures, one fly in the ointment is we'd have to offload money, as we don't have anywhere close to enough cap space right now to pay him. When Moulson and Pominville come off the books after this year we'd be fine, but right now we'd have to free up around $7 million to sign him.

I'm not so sure. If they can get 85% of Nylander's production for 40% of his price, I think that's pretty attractive.
