I really think it's just the quality of competition. The Kings, for example, are very bad. Tonight is a trap game for the Sabres. The Ducks are beatable but our team will be feeling good about their effort last night and probably come out flat...

It's worth noting that a lot of the work the stats community does is independent and not based on data other people are collecting. Like...stats people will sit there and watch every game in their sample to put together data sets for something they want to measure like missed shots.

I feel like that's a pretty good deal for both parties
