I run into the same issue at work. I have to dumb my language down for a number of my coworkers because when I use appropriate words for their intended purpose it's too confusing. It was acceptable when I worked in factories. But I work in a nice office now. With college educated people.

I've been saying for years that this all started with Larry the Cable Guy making stupid "cool". Swaths of this population took his character as representative and red state politicians have been more than happy to slash education funding to make their redneck dreams come true.
