It's in my DNA... Moments like last night take me to the play by play guy. I tracked down Dan's calls of Tage's five goals. It wasn't that easy. Nothing on sabres.com. I found them on WGR's site by playing a postgame podcast and advancing 15 seconds at a time until I got to the plays of the game at 31:10. They were good calls. Dan has another level. I think he tries very hard not to be Rick. And I think at his core is the idea that only the biggest moments deserve the most excitement. Fine, but we're not used to that, and any big goal even in a meaningless game (and there have way too many of those) deserves a big call. Anyway, what does everyone think of the calls? In the end I think if Dan recalibrates himself a little and is a little less principled, he might just be a pretty good fit for Sabres fans.

Put another way and perhaps making it sound more achievable, are the Sabres a 103 point team the rest of the way (if adjusted for a full season) rather than the 78 point team they've been so far?

Of course not. But you have to be realistic about being so far back in the pack a third of the way in. Historically it's unlikely a team will make the playoffs from this position.

In glancing at the Twitter comments, it looks like even fellow analytics peeps cast shade on the incredulity. Still it's amazing to me that whatever concocted stat that was can be used to evaluate someone's night. These people know literally nothing about hockey.

I love you but where have moral victories gotten us? They'll grow when they win. Maybe Adams is realizing that?

In other injury news, the franchise remains century to century.

Every year it seems about this time I get a saying stuck in my head (other than "Muriel you b**** I'm finally going to kill you!!!!!"). Learning to lose. It's a perennial realization that despite all this young talent, the losing culture somehow continues to replicate itself. You don't learn anything from last night as a player. Just that, the next time you're in this situation you know what's going to happen. Not enough experience around you, coaching that's either clueless to the importance of winning or just clueless... Washrinserepeat. The only use of analytics I'd endorse is finding out what refs let what go at what time in games in what situations. Like going down I-95, they can't call them all.

How many penalties would you like to see in an NHL game?

I always think of the killdeer when I see KO skate. His one shoulder is usually cocked a little as if he is feigning an injured wing to draw predators away from his nest of precious eggs. I can't be the only one. Also I love that even LGR is like, "Dude..."
