I'm guessing a lot did, really. For any brother pair, one team got the lesser. This is some solid work here. Also: I don't think anyone has mentioned the O'Reilly brothers here yet, right? Huh: Cal put up 53 pts in 75 games with Lehigh in the AHL this year. Good for him!

In hindsight, yes. At that point, there were a lot of questions about him. It was what, this years All-Star break that the switch flipped?

- Does Jagger have moves like Jagger? - For a minute, I was wondering if he was related to Scut Farkus, but I see the name is spelled different.

Plenty of elevation to come by here in Ithaca, lol. It's not majestic alpine passes or anything, but there are just endless segments like this around. https://www.strava.com/segments/723649

Official Sabres to Retire Ryan Miller’s Number on January 19, 2023
MattPie replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
September 30th, 2050. The Buffalo Sabres pioneer using letters instead of numbers on NHL jerseys because they only have 22 unretired numbers left. "This is a great day for the NHL and the Buffalo Sabres. Using letters gives so many more combinations for the players to choose from. 26*26 is 672 combinations; it's unlikely we'll retire that many for at least a few decades," said Sabres President of Hockey Operations Cody Eakin. Head Coach Victor Olofsson agreed, stating, "It's good to see the players and fans embracing this new avenue for creativity. I already saw a fan in the stands with "PP" and the name "Drunkard" on the new Blue, Gold, Red, Black, and Silver jerseys released last week." -
An NHL team has a limit of 23 players on the active roster and dress 20 per game. Injured players don't count, so signing a vet to sit in the press box takes away player that can practice and rotate in game-to-game. Plus, I'm not sure there are that many vets that want to sit all the time (either because they're getting old, or they want to make an impression for their next contract). I could see some disgruntlement in the locker room if I feel like the Sabres are tanking my NHL career. Another good point.

I was ~65 this morning when I started, climbed all the way to 70 before I finished, lol.

Apparently the last time I looked at this thread was 2018 and @biodork was posting. Huh. Doing a ride this weekend, https://www.bikesignup.com/bikesandbeers-fingerlakes (30 mile). Had a bit of panic after I signed up without looking at the course; there are some hills around here I 100% cannot ride up. Did a test ride this morning on similar hills as the course and crawled up them without stopping. 2x-3x the Strava KOM times; I'll take it. 🤞

Sabres sign Josh Bloom to His ELC, Will Report to the Amerks on an ATO
MattPie replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
We'll talk about him for a few years, at which point he'll either be one of the 25% that make the NHL, or the 75% (or so) that don't from the third round. Hopefully Buffalo got a deal since (based on the tweet) he slid due to... injury? Put up 30G/61P in 67 games in the OHL this year. -
Probably sponsored by ChTZ, I'd guess.

Looking at the draft pick hits, a 7th is something like 8% to play in the NHL meaningfully. But a 4th is only around 20%. Down in this part of the draft, more chances to hit is probably more important than that difference. And getting the pick for free because if for whatever reason the contract could be LITR is icing on the cake. As other have said, extra pick, cap flexibility, and zero consequences? Sign me up. (I don't count the $700k paid out, that's the owners' money and not my problem; cap is the only $ number worth caring about)

The NFL has a handbook for players as the come into the league with things just like this (maybe not NFTs), but watching out for investments, sycophants, not getting into fights in bars, etc.. My guess is this is too new and still not 100% considered a scam, but I'd bet that in the next few years there will be a section if it goes the way it looks. (My knowledge is many years old, but I can't believe they don't still have it; it's worth noting that players in the NFL have likely zero life skills; they go from home to college, with everyone taking care of the star player, to the NFL and are suddenly in charge of their life with a ton of money)

Allen has a kinda Bro vibe about him, not too surprised. I bet they pay him well to do it.

I don't know, Gautama Buddha is in the conversation.

I found in the UK it was mixed, which I found interesting. I expected it to be left just like driving, but at least in London it wasn't a rule, even outside the touristy areas. Related: runners who run on the left side of multi-use trails. I get why you do it on the road with cars, but on a trail we're all going similar speeds. Makes for dangerous interactions if there are walkers on the right edge, a runner on the left edge, and bike traffic coming the other direction or passing. Double-related: groups of walkers on trails walking 2-4 wide and taking up the whole thing while simultaneously being oblivious to people around them.

I wonder if they just pay that out of pocket as an investment to their future. It's possible the school would help them out too. It sounds counter-intuitive, but attracting future-NHL talent is easier if you have future-NHL talent on the team already, and I'd think that a player might avoid a school that makes that harder. Who knows. EDIT: https://www.nhl.com/flyers/news/meltzers-411-about-the-college-kids/c-308262592

How does that work for NCAA players, can the Sabres fly and house them in Buffalo, or would that be receiving money?
-
Maybe that's a "poor game" compared to trouncing teams in the regular season (and the Pats the week before). People expect to see perfection but that's not going to happen often since the other team had to be pretty good to get that far too.

I took a racquetball to the forehead one day and it apparently looked like I'd been shot with the way I spun around trying to get out the way. I think it's mostly instinct; *****-sapiens who didn't react to getting hit in the face got naturally-deselected.

Otto sighting! That's all well and good, but there *are* other places to play hockey and get paid. I forget who we were talking about, but the average salary for the AHL is a small fraction of the Swiss League. He'd make more if he gets to the NHL, but riding the AHL bus for low pay may not be enough.

(Completely OT): Any experience with Facebook Marketplace or Craiglist?
MattPie replied to Eleven's topic in The Aud Club
Oh, check out your local Buy Nothing group. The creators style it as a movement and it kind of is: people will ask for, give, or loan things out to each other. It's FB based, so there's at least some accountability and the moderators are supposed to make sure it's real people on there. We got and gave stuff all the time in PA, most of the time doing porch pickup and mostly free items. We lived in a townhouse though, so it was less risky than having randos over to your property. You can also do a traditional meet. https://buynothingproject.org/ We don't do it now as there's no group where we live (and we don't want to start one). -

I've bought and sold a few things on FB and bought on CL. The advice above is sound, although I've always done portable items like motorcycle gear or bicycles. General portable item tips: For higher value items, what works well are police station parking lots, many have "Online Sale" areas for the purpose. For really high-value items, meet at the buyers bank if possible. That way you can show up with no cash, there's camera security all over the place, and if it's a deal you can go inside and withdraw cash so there's no personal check or other nonsense. The only possible issue there is if someone followed you to your next destination (hopefully your own bank) or something, I guess. A cashier's check may make sense too. -
Mike Myers appeared on Colbert in a Sabres sweater...
MattPie replied to Eleven's topic in The Aud Club
So now that we have the "there's no 100% perfect solution" parade done, let's start talking about ways we can mitigate it. It's not impossible to make it harder for people to acquire guns shoot up kids, it just isn't. The reasonable (IMHO) stuff as already been suggested here and start with that. Then we can start with how people get to that point (hopelessness) and start working on that too. "It can't be perfect so why try" is quitter talk. -
Completely agree, they only way those guys shake loose are cap issues which luckily the Sabres don't currently have, and a few teams do.

They don't really, though. They're going to keep targeting the 25% of people that are way off on the right because they know they'll show up at the voting booth.
