Are the Sabres out of the running for the playoffs?
MattPie replied to inkman's topic in The Aud Club
I get what you're saying, they're not out of it. "Get 13-14 points in the next 10", is a good start, because they're going to have to get 13-14 out of the next 10 for the rest of the season. No slips, no "well, they ran into a bunch of good teams and went 4-5-1"; for the rest of the season it's crunch time. I don't think any team can play that way for 6 months with out a drop-off. -

Right now it's .652, so close. Still a lot to ask. Doing the math, they need to play at a 107-point season pace to get to 98 points. That seems like a big hill to overcome. Even dropping to a more historically normal 94 points, that's still a 101-point season pace. That's 0.616, so not impossible based on before the losing streak. Suffice it to say, the Sabres losing streak ate up all the losses that bubble teams have and still qualify for the playoffs. They now have to be a good to very good team for the rest of the season to realistically have a shot. I don't think Anderson/Comrie/UPL get it done, unfortunately. I think Anderson is the only one that has shown that level so far but there's no way he can play the rest of the season and not break down again. -
Stick tap to LGR and fancystats on this call. They nailed it.

Not related to today, but this house is awesome except it doesn't have an outside faucet for a hose. There's one in the utility closet in the garage where the well is, but I had to rig up a couple hoses with quick disconnects to run out through the garage. But, I can't leave it with doors open all the time. It's a minor hassle in the grad scheme of things, but if I owned this place I'd be drilling a hole through the utility closet exterior wall the day after I took possession.

Paging KA, available goaltender alert!

That will happen as soon as the Sabres GT situation resolves, just like Eichel has been TNT'd.

Meh, looks OK, but apparently didn't understand her husband's job. Or to be honest, other jobs too. Once upon a time, I was told, "I don't have any work for you. There's a position in Maryland or you can stay and hope you don't get caught up in the next round of layoffs." There was a round just before I got off the project I was working; I took the job in Maryland. Binghamton wasn't a thriving job market and I was single with zero attachments to the area.

I'm curious if that bump after 37 on offense is that all the average players retire leaving only the aging stars who were beating the curve all along.

I mean, this guy slipped, fell, and caught his beer; don't be a quitter. 🙂

I can't image there have been too many times a team has played as the home and away team in consecutive weeks on the same field. I suppose the Jets/Giants have the best bet, I think they're still the only team that shares a field. Oh, and for the 6-4 stuff? that's 0.600 points pace, which works out to 10-7 for the season. Every 10-win+ team was in the playoffs last year, and there was a team with 9 wins that made it from each conference too. Hopefully we can agree that 0.600 is a pretty safe playoff pace in NHL or NFL.

I was just in Detroit a few weeks ago for a convention (KubeCon/CloudNativeCon), it was pretty cool although I didn't really get out of the downtown/convention center area. Kinda like a bigger Buffalo, with a mix of those classic early 1900s office buildings but several more modern buildings. There was a Red Wings game the one night (which I didn't go to). I'm sure it'd be awesome being there on a game day with the Lions and Tigers (but not the Bears) downtown. A downtown dome in Buffalo would have been awesome. Maybe I'll be around in 40 years when they have to replace this new one with a $20B new one to see it downtown.

Will there be a new record and 10+ defeats in a row?
MattPie replied to Berg's topic in The Aud Club
Maybe church is a euphemism for Canada for a few pops. -
That's fair, although I'll probably just go with the ones I have now unless I upgrade the whole thing. At the time, they weren't really fancy, but they are heat-formed to my really strangely shaped feet. Still uncomfortable and painful, but less than the awful rear-entry boots I had before that.

Nice, my skis from like 2000-ish were just on the head of the trend where they were getting shorter (187s for my 6'2" self) and more hour-glass shaped. I went over to the Greek Peak ski swap this year hunting for said XC skis (few and far between there) and the skis are all round and stubby now. 🙂

On a related note, have there been huge safety upgrades for skis in the last, say, 20 years? 🙂 I'm going to take mine down to checked out and whatnot, but if there are huge benefits I'll probably buy another set if this sticks. Don't care about performance at this point, I'm sure new carbon fiber or whatever skis are amazing.

MsPie has tried downhill a few times in the past and has hated it every time. It's not at all part of the plan, lol. To be honest, I'm not sure RosePie will take to it as she's pretty timid about speed too. We have a little toy snowboard that she does like, but just on the not-really-a-hill lump in the yard. It's possible she'll surprise me and like bigger hills. Better question is how much I want to, restarting skiing in my 40s will be tough.

Renting for a year to find out if it'll stick might be a good plan. 🙂 I plan to ski this year after a... 12 year hiatus? I'm not entirely sure it's a good idea, but I skied a ton in a past and am in better shape than I have been in years. I live 20 minutes from Greek Peak so it's easy to sneak over there on odd days, like a Wednesday night. The plan is to get the family on XC skis this year and RosePie on downhill in a couple. She's not a natural risk taker so a little older that she can be taught seems like the plan.

Same, right around the same time. For me, at least, it wasn't too bad after the first day or two. I'll be honest, the number of Chrysler "my transmission had to be replaced at 60k" stories has soured me on ever buying anything from them.
