  1. Anyone doubting the McEichel effect need only look at my Tank chart to be convinced. I picked the 65-point line because (if I remember correctly), all but one 30th-place team since the 2004-05 lockout had finished below it and (more importantly) only one non-30th team had finished below it. It is looking like there could be four teams below it this year. We're still below last year, but it's getting close. They finished 1-7-2 in the final 10 last season, which would actually guarantee them 30th this year too, since it would mean that Arizona would have won one of their head-to-heads.
  2. No doubt. Most likely will decide who gets 30th. I just posted this in my Charts thread, but here's the last stretch:
  3. Just watched that goal (below). Wow, f'ing ridiculous. If that type of thing gets them 30th, I'm going to go ballistic.
  4. Personally, I prefer uncommon names to extremely common ones (having lived with one myself), but not really stupid, goofy ones. Names like North, Apple, Unique and anything on this list are just mean to give a kid. Bohdi, on the other hand, doesn't bother me at all. Less common (though, the type that could become a fad name), but a real name.
  5. Perfect game. Good effort by the good guys, entertaining, and the young guys showing that the future is bright ... ... but 0 points. ;)
  6. Fun question: if the Sabres were to end up in 29th behind Arizona, what would you think of the following pre-lottery trade? What would Arizona think? What would have to be added to make it possible (if at all)? Trade: If Arizona wins the lottery, then the teams keep their own picks. Otherwise, they swap picks. Net result, Arizona's chance at McDavid goes from 20% to 33.5% (basically, from 1 in 5 to 1 in 3), since they get it if either they or the Sabres win the lottery, but they otherwise get the third pick. The Sabres get Eichel. I might have seen it working with last year's odds (Arizona chance at McDavid would have gone from 25% to 43.8%), but probably not with this year's odds. Even then, it would have taken a GM with a lot of balls to take that chance. Still, fun to think about.
  7. They're in danger of slipping out of home-ice advantage, haven't played since Tuesday and won't again until next Tuesday, so I can't imagine them starting anyone but Rinne. Nolan suggested Hackett might go, but Lindback used to be a Pred, so who knows who we'll have in net.
  8. Five minutes of searching at the time also revealed that he hadn't played center since his second-to-last year in the Liiga ("Finnish Elite League") and that the new coach that he had in his last year there attributed his substantial increase in output to being switched from center to wing. He was as much of an NHL center as Gerbe was.
  9. I know they play the (currently) 30th-place team twice, so there's that. ;)
  10. It's weird, I have been stressed about all of this since the Boston game, but then I had a sudden calm this afternoon and just knew the Devils would win. I'm still on the ledge, but my toes aren't quite as far over the edge.
  11. :wallbash: Coyotes played their backup last night and they weren't playing back-to-back games. WTF?
  12. Coyotes lost in regulation last night and both teams play Saturday night. Sabres could find themselves in 29th Sunday morning. Expecting to see Lindback versus Kinkaid (who actually has been pretty good outside of one game back in early February.)
  13. It only would if GMTM told him to focus on player development and to make sure Hackett gets enough starts to keep his rights (even if they were really just ways to tank) and he refused to do so. We wouldn't know that, of course, as the reasons would be given a nice big payment and a non-disclosure agreement. Edit: and before anyone says that he was hired to win, so you can't fire him for that. Bulls**t. He was hired to execute the will of the franchise to the best of his ability with the roster given to him. Usually, that will is to win, but certainly that can and does change once a team is eliminated from the playoffs. Otherwise, it would be like saying that the GM is hired to put the best team on the ice now, which we know is not always true (see sellers at the trade deadline.) At some point, they start to sacrifice current performance for future performance and it's not unreasonable to ask a coach to do the same.
  14. Anybody got a cold? Willing to sneeze on Lindback?
  15. Not to rehash it, but he's stated many times that he will be looking to trade picks for 23-25 year old players to shorten the time-table. However, until those are made, he's being realistic about the chance of a team of kids, even with some other acquisitions, jumping into the playoffs next year. He was also against the changes that were made to the lottery (even years ago), so when he says that selfishly, he hopes that he's in a position to benefit from it (everyone out of the playoffs will be in a lottery for the top-three picks), it certainly seemed to many of us as a "you wanted it, you got, but now how are you going to feel when we're in position to get a top-three pick again?" jab. Others took it more literally as he will do whatever he needs to in order to stay out of the playoffs next year.
  16. Yeah, I get mad about that year and think, "man, if only we had ____" Then, I remember that we got Ristol instead and think, "oh yeah, hmmm, he would be tough to give up." I never look at him and think, "damn him, he should have been ____"
  17. But, I agree with him on both of these (this year only, of course.) My point was that it only sucks right now because they aren't going in the direction that would benefit them and we were very happy when it was (much of the season.) Think of it like this: for each game, let bizarro-points = 2 - points, call each loss a bizzaro-win and let 30th = bizarro-PT (but worth much more than the actual PT is worth.) We have been bizarro-winning a lot this season, but right when it looks like we're in a position to take the bizarro-PT, we've given up a lot of bizarro-points (while Arizona has been racking them up) and been playing like bizarro-s**t (i.e., well). Plus, our coach seems set on riding our bizarro-cold (i.e., hot) goaltender, who is the single biggest reason that the only got one bizarro-point in the last two games, while the Coyotes got four.
  18. I bet you that I (we) have enjoyed and been entertained by more games this season than fans who actually want them to win (20-43-7, 'nuff said.) I simply cheer for the opposing players as though they are playing for the Sabres, because in a very real sense, they are. It's really not that hard (OK, cheering for Marchand last night was tough), since players change on teams all of the time. It's like Bizarro-Sabres this year. I've only not enjoyed this season when they had there win streak, when Neuvirth was picking up points and the last two days (last night especially.) In fact, I am even more convinced that if the Sabres end up 29th, then they will not get the top pick (it's only a 13.5% chance, which is even worse than the slim 20% chance if they finish 30th.) Tanking would be far less attractive of an option if McDavid were sitting alone. Were that the case, then no spot would give them even a good chance of getting a true elite player (1 in 5, at best). The key is Eichel. He is also considered a generational or near-generational player, just a hair below McDavid. The 80% chance that you get him when you finish 30th versus the 20% when you finish 29th is far more important than the 20% versus 13.5% for McDavid. I consider it a race for Eichel with a bonus shot for McDavid.
  19. I'm not worried about them winning out. Far from it. Arizona is playing less inspired hockey. If we win those two head-to-head games in regulation, which is looking very possible, then all else equal (i.e., the other 10 games), Arizona ends below us. With Nolan behind the bench, I'm really worried that we'll see Lindback vs. McKenna twice.
  20. I literally cheer out loud when they get scored on. I think of them like anti-goals and we want a lot of them. Losing a game right now feels just as good as a win any other year.
  21. You do know that statements like that basically point out that being a fan is silly to begin with? It's totally irrational to care about them winning or losing for precisely the reason that you said. But, we do it anyway. So, personally, I'll take a dozen losses now for a much better chance at some big wins for years to come.
  22. I've seen a lot of cellar teams play spoiler against backup goaltenders over the years and most of them were still in the cellar the next year.
  23. Of course, Nolan will ride the hot goalie. So, yeah, we're f**ked.
  24. I know. Stupid points system. They can't just call a win a win, anymore.
