Considering Lindy was talking about implementing (planned in the summer) changes during camp while he knew UPL was in doubt and Lyon was the other guy, and that there is no indication UPL is going to be out for an extended period, I kinda doubt they are suddenly changing again. I think the kinda changes he was talking about were aimed at limiting high-danger chances, which ultimately should benefit goalies of any size. But I think your premise that the system was designed with UPL in mind is a strong take. To borrow a Josh Allen-ism, UPL is exposed most when he has to play hero puck. Behind a stable, predictable system I think he can deliver starting calibre goaltending.

Sabres to place Alexandar Georgiev on waivers today
Rasmus_ replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
Well if they're going to give Ellis a shot, by all means. If any team can afford to give a goalie a shot, why not it be us. -
Mike Leone mentioned today that the decision between the AHL-WHL for Mrtka is day to day
-
Hell no, but I’ll be watchin’ all three games! HOCKEY!!!!
-
I would like to bring up that Hockey Writers assessment again. Specifically the comment that Ellis’ AHL team had to use a specific defensive system to take advantage of his strengths and weaknesses. I am going to go out on a limb and assume that the defensive system going into this season would be one that benefits a taller goalie (UPL) and plays to the strengths he brings. For at least the start of the season, we are using two goalies that are not considered big goalies, and likely play a smaller goalie game. I am really curious if this has the coaching staff making changes in system at the brink of the start of the season.

Is that not to allow for the late game to start early as well? They want people watching all 3 games. Besides, do you really want to watch Florida raise their banner?

Sabres Waiver Claim Colten Ellis
PerreaultForever replied to Porous Five Hole's topic in The Aud Club
I don't know why they chose Ellis. I guess he has more potential but most "experts" figured DiPietro would be the goalie claimed first and he wasn't. What's the rationale on Ellis over him if you're claiming somebody? - Today

Sabres to place Alexandar Georgiev on waivers today
PerreaultForever replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
Well I have no idea if Ellis is any good but Georgiev wasn't very good so we shall see. I suspect Georgiev clears. The decision comes when UPL is healthy, then they have to keep 3 or waive the weakest link. Ellis might get claimed back if it's him. Unless UPL has one of these mystery ailments like Risto in Philly and he goes on LTIR and we never know what's wrong with him forever. -
Reimer was cut hours ago, which is what restimulated the conversation about him, please see upthread.

Sabres to place Alexandar Georgiev on waivers today

Georgiev was a lotto ticket. Just like any other goalie in the market. The Georgiev ticket didn’t win so they move on to the Eliis ticket. -
Reimer signed with the Leafs. Also we're good in Rochester.
-
If Georgiev doesn’t want to go to Rochester, perhaps they could sign Reimer to back up Levi.
-
Your perspective is different from mine. Go ahead and believe what you want to believe. So be it.
-
Honestly, I'm not going to ***** on Kevyn Adams's first-ever attempt to actually address the near-term problem at this crucial position. Not sure it will work, and I still don't want him around as a GM, but at least he finally did something other than sign a has-been backup.

Why did Adams sign Georgiev? Me thinks he has a Masters degree in how not to be a GM. -
I can't say I've seen many Thunderbird games on FloHockey, but his stats (.920sv%) and awards (Springfield Team MVP) and the way Blues fans are grousing over losing him, tell me he's worth a claim. At 25 it's time see what he can do in the bigs.

It's just when I read screeds like yours, followed by "I hope I'm wrong," I wonder if that's true. it's like the guy who calls WGR and says he's not demanding anyone be fired, but then reads a laundry list of grievances with Sean McDermott and/or Brandon Beane.
-
Have you seen him play? What type of goalie is Ellis?
-
You may not be aware of it but you were with your response. That's okay. I'm not bothered by it.
-
I seriously doubt there was any actual plan, or trap that was set, to get Ellis. But having two goalies that thrive in the same system has to be an advantage. Unless you’ve installed the wrong system for them…..

As if you need another reason. Grabbing Ellis is the kind of move you often advocate for; pouncing when talent ends up on the waiver wire. -
I mean, they did acknowledge the challenges of seeing pucks in traffic when you can’t see over or around the players in front of you. That doesn’t absolve taller guys who just don’t have the reflexes or instincts. It just means taller guys scouting reports identify reflexes and instincts as drawbacks.
-
Aren’t they making tickets really cheap to entice people?
-
I could only imagine if another team picked up Ellis on waivers. That team would have been soooo much smarter than the Sabres.
-
Am I though?
