Not the higher seed. Laval had the choice of 2,2,1 or 2,3. If 2,2,1 they would start at home. Sometimes it's about conflicts with the arena.

Laval is the #1 overall seed. The Macgregor Kilpatrick trophy winner. The equivalent of the President's trophy in the AHL. Laval got to pick the series format.

actually makes sense for the lesser seed; you win the 1st 2 and you put the higher seed in a must win for 3 consecutive games at most. You only need to win 1 rd game

It was and it was controversial as it was the 1st "major" NA sports league championship trophy to be sponsored by & named for a corporate advertiser.

WHA was ahead of its time in that regard.
