The "New Arena"

Seriously? I didn't eat there for one game because i ate at pearl street thus not allowing me to not have an opinion? Please dude.

Not being allowed to have an opinion on the food at the arena yesterday based on not actually eating the food at the arena yesterday? Seems perfectly legit to me.

There is no good excuse for having mediocre (at best) quality food at arena prices. Well, there is one excuse..... profits.

My point is, the venue and it's limitations are not limiting the type and quality of the food. They are obviously using lower quality suppliers and not trying very hard here in Buffalo. Deleware North is a huge outfit handling concessions and food service at casinos, hotels, racetracks, the Kennedy Space Center, and world famous stadiums like Wembley in London. I doubt that they are serving crappy food at all of those places.

The question is, are they not trying very hard to serve good food in Buffalo because they don't think we'll pay for it? Or it may very well be that we've shown them that we'll buy crappy food and pay arena premiums for it so they aren't inclined to change things up. I'm only in the arena for a game, maybe 2, a season and I won't pay arena prices for food so they aren't losing any significant revenues when I vote with my dollar. But I would think that the regular ticket holders could have more say in the quality of the food served. But when it does get changed up, the ticket holders need to support it or it will go right back to what it was.

What would be really cool is if the main food concourse was turned into a taste of Sheridan...

Mighty, Duff's, Ted's, Anderson's, etc.

Having said that....about the only food I ever buy there are the peanuts.

The last time I tried something, because I just couldn't wait, I got 1 bite into a hotdog before I said, "Ewww, I'm not that hungry."

And nobody should comment on the food until you try each station.

Besides, i wasn't disagreeing him on the food, i was just saying quit being such a baby about it. That was my opinion of my post. I wasn't saying he was wrong on the food...

My expectations for food at stadiums are at about the same level as the music I demand when my call is put on hold.

This town and this area boast the best food of any kind.

Name somewhere else that has the variety of excellent food that you can find in this area.

you really need to get out of Erie County. This assertion is ridiculous.

Agreed. Although the wings and pizza suck in the Washington DC area, there is a lot of good food that more than makes up for it. And some of it is reasonably priced!

I'll probably get killed for saying this, but all things being equal, Buffalo is a a pretty boring place to eat.

Sure you can get pub fare, comfort food, and good values, but even in the Eastern Conference...I would put Buffalo last in terms of cities for food.

Toronto - Montreal - Ottawa - Boston - New York - Philly - Pittsburgh - Miami/Sunrise -

Washington - - - - - - -all have Buffalo beat by a long shot.

We might tie Raleigh - but I gotta give them the edge for BBQ. Not really sure about Tampa.

Atlanta would have won but... Winnipeg????? Not a shot.

Although Philly doesn't impress me and Miami seems a little froo-froo, I agree with your general premise. .

It's funny, every time I've been to Philly on business, I've gotten a ton of recommendations for Italian food -- and it's all been, uh, meh. Next time I'll specify seafood.

In my experience, whenever I travel I never ask for Italian recommendations because I always get sent to the closest place with a red pasta sauce.

Except in Boston....they just send you to the North End.

I think you are selling Buffalo food choices way short. Granted, Buffalo cannot compete with a big city for numbers of establishments (big populations=lots of restaurants), there is a very large variety of food choices avialable in Buffalo. If you think Buffalo is just pub fare, comfort food, and good value, you haven't looked close enough.

The big cities do have Buffalo beat. Can't deny that. Sheer numbers will do that.

I generally agree with you as well.

Also, my friends from Buffalo think I'm some kind of heathen for saying I like Rochester more after having lived here steady since 2007. I hate it when people who only ever left Buffalo for college get insulted when you don't think it's the next best thing since gravity. I understand being proud of your home town but come on.

I have my favorite places, and I'm not certainly not a Buffalo basher, but saying Buffalo has "The best food of any kind" is a little over the top. (what I was responding to)

Buffalo does great pub fare, comfort food, and value and there is nothing wrong with that, it's what we do best with no excuses. But as for variety? We have some excellent choices in steakhouses, I suppose.

Taste is subjective of course, but palettes around here are a little too distilled for my liking. You can usually find good stuff wherever you go, on the other hand, it is much harder to find exciting stuff, complex flavors, or anything particularly edgy.

1) OK. Let's start with the much-heralded improvements to the food stands. Frankly, no improvement. Nicer signs, and I guess what was supposed to be a nod to Buffalo (but "Peace Bridge Pizza" is now just "pizza! pizza!"), but the exact same tired less-than-food from Jeremy Jacobs. The renamed pizza looked inedible, as did the renamed hotdogs; the Pile High sandwich station is still there and probably still doesn't pile a sandwich high. I know, I'm being negative, but it's honest.

There is a new "cantina" just up the stairs from the lobby, but it serves the same crappy burritos that were around last year near Aisle 18.

The food has NOT changed, despite the presser last week. I still am left wondering (a) why we're beholden to Delaware North, which does VERY little for B-Lo and owns the Bruins and (b) why arenas in Toronto and Washington can have decent and somewhat fresh food, but we cannot. (MSG, the only other hockey arena I've been to, was equally disgusting, but that was 2000.)

2) The lobby has not changed dramatically. It's nice to see the "We Live Hockey" mural, but everything else is the same. This isn't negative; it's neutral.

3) Good to see the slugs gone from the scoreboard, and I like the new center stripe (more conservative) and the yellow paint as opposed to red. They've finally figured it out: it's a Sabres arena, and not some multi-sport complex.

4) A line so long at the Sabres store--while the anthems were sung--that they were letting in five at a time. That's gotta be because of the promotion, right?

But all in all, hey, I'm there for the team. I'm very disappointed in the "improved" (not really) concession stands that were touted last week. I'll keep eating before games, thank you, and that's too bad, because I'd rather eat at the game. I don't need a steak and a salad; I just need a couple of slices of pizza that actually are palatable, or a hotdog that actually looks like it was cooked.

EDIT also this: 5) MOST of the time, but not all of the time, the music between whistles was loud enough, but not so loud that I couldn't have a conversation with the person next to me. Still needs work, but it was better than last year. Also: Shocktop on tap! Good call there.

Buffalo is far from the city with "the best food of any kind". This I'll agree with. But you are seriously not looking close enough if you can't find variety. All sorts of world ethnicities are represented in the metro area. And plenty of fusion styles too. Edgy may be in short supply but it's out there. You need to leave Sheridan Drive and Transit Road to find it. What Buffalo lacks is variety in high end places. Very little variety there. And Buffalo is lacking in quality seafood.

Buffalo doesn't have numbers for each choice but most gastro styles are available.

Correct. Buffalo also has some (but not all) of the best restaurants I have been to, anywhere, in the $10-$20 / entree category. And some damned good ones in the category above that, too, like Tempo, Hutch's, and Lombardo. Buffalo doesn't compare to Chicago, but unless DC has changed drastically in the last 7 years, I think the food, not necessarily the service, is much better here.

All of this is a reminder that I need to get that restaurant guide done before the season starts!

This I really can't disagree with. That's pretty well said.
